Jen, you can make you kids homemade pop tarts with home made pie crust using your butter and and put your homemade jam inside. It is a yummy treat that they might enjoy and it is WAY better than Poptarts!! 😂🤷‍♀️

O man, those biscuits and gravy!! ❤ I enjoyed your grocery haul, I have eaten tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers from my garden this year too. I would love to see more on how you grow and start your winter garden. In my home we gotta have snacks too, and they aren't always healthy. And for those who want to say something about it, I say you didn't buy it, so you can't criticize it, mind ya business, lol 😉

I make my own low budget syrup. 2 cups sugar one white, one brown, 1 cup water, boil, add make line and vanilla extract if wanted. It's good. Maybe you won't like it but worth a try. Sometimes you just need other things to eat, I get It! Nancy from nebraska

I love your videos and this was a great one. Never apologize for your lifestyle. You can eat whatever you choose and nobody else should get a say in that except your family. Your biscuits looked fantastic too! 😉 Tip for your crazy expensive green onions: put roots in shallow water cup in fridge or on counter and they’ll keep growing for months if you never cut below 1/3 of length. Just freshen the water once or twice a week.

I'd love to see more of this type of video. Sometimes we focus on outside the house so much. We have a small homestead, but source our milk/beef/pork from local farmers. We try to eat as clean as possible, but we DO still have those little guilty pleasures too! We too live in a small town and we do have several grocery stores available. But, the prices are high here as well. Our closest Sam's and/or Costco is 50 minutes away. We do bulk shopping every 3 months, and I fill in with any perishables we need at the local stores. We have a good-sized garden space which is still under construction since this was our first year here. AND, we are working on building a green house thanks to y'alls video! Thanks for sharing! ~ Stephanie

This was a good video, although some of the criticisms of grocery stores, I didn't agree with. While the corporate stores leave a lot to be desired, when it all comes down to it, its food, and you CAN eat it. Not all are able to grow their food or even a portion of their food. Now, to be transparent, I do work in an AZ owned Kroger store, called Frys, and our produce is still being grown in Arizona, because we are in zone 9b, and we have several months left. My own garden is finally taking off, because the summer was incredibly harsh on my plants. I am looking forward to eating my own produce :) And canning for the new year :)

I'm with you on pop tarts and breakfast cereals, Jen and Zack! We can't grow our food due to location but I do buy in bulk and scratch cook pretty much everything but pasta. We eat fairly low carb in our household so we don't have a ton of pasta and make our own bread, store made bread is usually a treat. It's really expensive to get meat here, I'm struggling to get a decent store up of it. Yall inspire me to keep pushing towards our dream of going back to homesteading! Thank you for posting this, it was comforting.

I love to make a homemade soup using my preserved beef broth or chicken broth. Toss in some 'taters, carrots, green beans, onions and garlic. I often add a few shakes of jalapeno Tabasco. Sometimes I thicken it with a bit of butter and flour. Super easy, inexpensive and OH! so tasty. Almost "free food". Zack's biscuits would be perfect with it.

It seems so elementary but honestly, it’s just my husband and me and food waste is THE HARDEST problem for us! I want to have a bigger garden and can more but we just struggle to eat it all. I need to get my family involved so I can give them food too. I wish I could find a food sharing person or something to share a half a cabbage head or a half a bag of lemons or whatever, if that makes sense. Thanks for your ideas.

Hi guys I enjoyed this as I believe balance is important to enjoying life! I have cut way back on buying from grocery store as even the things I used to think were essential (some canned soups taste so bad compared to homemade the convenience is not worth the bad taste and high salt and other things I don’t want to be eating! Zack cut the bottom, root end off those green onions and and grow them inside! They grow fast! I would like to see seed saving videos ( if you do that and how you make your own pasta ( butternut squash pasta sounds so delicious). ❤

I agree with everything you all are doing. Healthy food starts at home. Right now as I was watching this, I was on my second drying tray of homemade spaghetti noodles. No preservatives, just down home good cooking. We can our own spaghetti sauce and I used Jen's Bread and Butter Pickle recipe and made not only pickles out of cucumbers, but out of zucchini too and they are wonderful! I make (noodles and such) and can as much home grown garden food as possible. My husband hunts, and we fish for the big steelhead trout for our food as well. We are trying to be as self sufficient as possible, and each year, we are getting just a little bit closer. Love you guys! 💕

Very rural here...I understand the IGA dilemma. Dollar General is cheaper, though we try not to have to go to either. We have only been in our new location a couple of months, so we are just getting started again! We are very Blessed to have local raw milk (praying for cows soon!) and grass-fed meat options, so between bulk ordering, Azure Standard, Misfit Markets and monthly Aldi trips (an hour away), we do pretty well...I also make most of our stuff from scratch. We try to eat clean and organic, but hey, on those monthly Aldi trips, we sure enjoy our Krystals and Dunkin Donuts!!! God Bless!

Thank you for sharing! I did purchase Jen’s cookbook!! Everything I’ve made out of it is absolutely delicious ❤️❤️ I think most of us have those guilty not so good food pleasures…….not so bad if it’s not everyday all day lol. We all have that craving from time to time to eat “junkie” as long as it’s in moderation. You’re an inspiration to so many to become self sufficient. Due to my back injury, and leg injury I can’t keep up with a huge garden or even livestock. But I do purchase from local farmers all summer long and can my butt off to get me through the winter. I also source my meat from a local farmer. I hope your family has a wonderfully blessed week!

We don’t get frigid temps in South Fla… Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Green Beans, Squash, ZucchiniGreen Peppers, Corn, etc.. A lot of the farmers I know Don’t use gmo seeds.. Which is a plus.. Ask your stores for Florida grown Veggies and Fruits.. Boxes store like to buy imports instead of buying USA Produce..

One use for eggs is making egg casseroles. Being single, I make them up, cut into rectangles, and freeze them, single serving. I throw various veggies in. Zucchini strips, carrot shreds, hashbrowns, onions, broccoli. Egg/milk mixture over the top and bake. I serve with either salsa or greek yogurt with dill on top or chipotle seasoning from Aldi. I make a 8-grain cooked cereal every morning with frozen blueberries and agave syrup. I buy the grains in large quantities and mix myself, instead of buying a pre-made mix. For fruit smoothies, I buy canned pineapple and freeze the chunks myself, and buy bananas and freeze slices. Eventually, I'll freeze my own strawberries and blueberries, but not yet. One of my favorite meals is sautéed cabbage with garlic, cubed potatoes, and Aldi's Apple chicken sausage. Getting my Chinese cabbage planted this week, so hopefully, only the sausage will be bought in the future. Grew garlic last year and got a 1/2 bushel of red potatoes from my small bed. Got multiple packages of the sausage put in the freezer over summer before prices went up.

Cut the white off green onion and stick in ground you'll have green again in a week ready to cut. Same here with stores. I find you have to shop wherever the majority shops to get freshest stuff because it has a higher turnover since more people shop there. I have Publix Winn Dixie save alot and Walmart. Walmart has the freshest produce everyone else is rotten. I love y'alls videos I could watch you everyday. And yes I agree we buy junk food and enjoy it mixed in to a healthy diet. Sometimes I just buy stuff for convenience cause I'd rather not make it but I can. I see y'all buy ketchup. I can make it but honestly love store bought better. Save the tomatoes for sauce and salsa. Lol keep videos coming love you guys.

Yeah You got it! So what do homesteaders buy from the grocery store. I raise anywhere from 80 - 90% of our food. I don't raise a great lot of herbs and spices so what I don't raise I buy. Our milk cows are new to our farm but the goats are putting out enough milk. Things like certain cheeses I buy, of course salt, nuts, some fruits, cat and dog food, toilet paper, paper towels, CLR, and other cleaners. I could get by without a lot of the stuff I buy, but stuff that I raise we eat. I am training a woman on how to plant a garden ETC, I told her that when you raise your food you must come up with ways how to cook them to taste good. Quiet frankly I love fried potatoes with onions added. I am sorry for all those people who think they have no place to raise anything when you can raise a lot in buckets of dirt, cardboard boxes, and other things that would only be discarded. When the going gets tough the tough gets going.

No shame! Food exhaustion is real!! We all know the struggle when listening to kids whining. It could be the last straw. Preserving is a God send but I agree, life happens. We like to try new things we see in a store then try to replicate it if we like it. That's cheaper than getting all the ingredients then not liking it. So much waste. You guys are great parents. If you like a rich brew of coffee, look into a French press. Look for a glass cylinder with chrome covered steel frame, metal lid. Look for the 10 or 12 cup size. You can use fewer grounds and even get Foldgers Classic to taste significantly better.

We produce 90% of our food between my small homestead and 2 of my direct neighbors. We are produce, poultry, and seafood. neighbor #1 is beef and dairy, neighbor #2 is pork and foraging. We all hunt and fish together. We have fruit and nut trees on each property with hives for pollination and honey. What we don't have is certain baking needs, spices , salt, coffee, chocolate, and candy. I mean it's a crime to not have cinnamon bears in the house at all times.... right?!

And I suppose better than not eating it at all but yep micros are best avoided and plastics in the micro is def something to avoid. And I can’t imagine not sautéed in a pan with yummy spices etc, you’ll never get that flavor from a nuker!

While they may be a little more expensive. By shopping at IGA (Independent Grocers Association) you are supporting a local business. IGA was form in 1926 to help independent family grocery stores compete in the market. It is very interesting to learn the history behind some business. I only knew this cause it was part of a marketing class I took in college. Any time I have the option to support a family owned or local business I will. Thank you for sharing, I agree sometimes you just gotta have a little sumthin.

Nearest Walmart/ Sam's club/Costco from us is almost 3 hours..just small town groceries near us..very expensive! We drive the 3 hours about every 4 months. I grow & preserve as much as possible. Thank goodness for Azure Standard! I make my own tortillas...I turn some into chips...I add herbs to the dough..yummy

I'd encourage you and everyone else to check the ingredients on the foods you are purchasing, especially snack foods. Look for 'contains bioengineered ingredients'. Bioengineered is different from GMO. Bioengineered utilizes CRISPR technology. They remove 'something' to change the property of a product, where GMO adds 'something'. Think of GMO seeds that will only grow with a specific pesticide. Many of the name brands you grew up on are made this way now. Campbell's soup, Knorr, Duncan Hines, the list goes on.

I read on the Goldfish cracker label that they use GMO ingredients making that ubiquitous snack crackers. So disappointing.

Put the root part of your green onions in water and they will regrow the green part. At least you might duplicate maybe triple your green onion purchase since it was so expensive. Just a thought.

So - here’s the thing- Aldi is a German owned company- IGA are franchises of an American company- So even though you may not get the selection at an IGA - I’d rather support them - and you just cut the greens off those onions & put the white part into a jelly jar of water - they’ll keep growing for you..,

Although, I bought a couple butternut squash from Azure Standard and it lasted on the shelf for a year before I canned it.
