*** Must always be plain, never pie pumpkin, with spices already in it!!!! I was just going to put this down. It is an absolute staple for dogs. I have 5 Imported German Shepherds, so my security/protection is good, but because German Shepherds are known to have digestive upset from fatty foods....chicken fat, pumpkin is always needed. I found I was always throwing a bit from the can away. I tried freezing it, but they turned their noses. My dog feed store had dehydrated pumpkin flakes with applesauce as the only other ingredient. I bought a 5 lb bag about 2 yrs ago and divided it, air sealed the divided portions and it's lasting forever but I also have a nice dehydrator so I plan on making my own dehydrated pumpkin for my dogs for later. . I can also pressure can my own as well. ❤❤❤A VERY IMPORTANT side note. Pumpkin is fiber, so it acts just like Metamucil. Give your dog too much, and you will give them the runs. But if your dog or even you are bound up.....pumpkin will help with that too, just like Metamucil!!!!! ****DOSE..... I give a heaping tablespoon for each dog that needs some firming up. They weigh between 70 to 105 lbs, younger females being the smaller. ****Give less for smaller dogs. Another word of note. If they have the runs for more than one time, for my dogs, I will stop regular food, boil a chicken breast, and cook some white rice (the hull on brown is harder to digest). Stop dog food for 24 hours and feed rice instead in smaller amounts but more often. Don't leave uneaten rice sitting in their bowl and wash it afterward. Rice can grow bacteria fairly quickly. Eating rice and the chicken breast allow the gastrointestinal tract to settle down. You all might wonder why this is important when this is for humans. You should know your dog and what is upset and needs an assist and what is normal or stress related, etc This is just an example of what I do. My dogs are trained, but DOGS period are a great warning system to intruders even if they are small and barky. A dog that starts barking alerts you that something is different in your environment. If you have food stored and someone else wants it, a dog will let you know that someone is sneaking around. That dog might only weigh 12 lbs and can't protect you, but he just warned you. Many breeds are good at telling whether a person has bad intentions. So, in my case, it will be important to keep my dogs healthy as they are a security system. Yours probably could be too with a little bit of training. If you have a dog that barks at everything, you can fix that... So, my theory is an additional way to protect your food is to take care of your dog too. I have been training dogs for 48 yrs. 🐾❤️🐾

I prep both the large #10 cans and the smaller cans of beans, as well as dried beans. The #10 for large groups. We have 10 people in our family that will end up at my home if it all hits the fan. The large cans will be great in that scenario. I stock the smaller cans for myself because I can use it up in two meals. I also do the cans because there might be times you are unable to cook or heat something up and you can eat these right out of the cans. I also do chili beans for the same reason. Dried beans for the times you can cook and do not want to use up your canned goods. Backups to the backups.

All I’m stocking currently is what’s been growing in my garden. Due to the absence of summer it’s been marginal. But yesterday I got my case of nectarines I had ordered, and they need to be canned today! Then I have to harvest all my celery and dehydrate it. Been busy putting the garden away before snow flies. Still have lots of fruit in the freezer that is being dehydrated or made into jams and jellies. Once I have some room in the freezer I will stock up on chicken and ground beef so I can can it. Love seeing a haul, and any pantry set up. That room looks great! Just so clean and organized. My storage areas look like war torn countries (project for another day). Been a prepper since my late teens, back in the 90s. It's as simple as adding a little bit here and there every time I go to the store. Got me through a lot of situations (job loss, less hours, car breakdowns, bigger sudden expenses, weather, power outages, illness, injuries, and sheer laziness). Shopping sales, especially. Rotating. Funny that you mentioned someone thought you were showing off money. How weird. If anything, it shows how it saves money over long run. Anyway, love the idea of an off premise location. I wont ask for details of course. I have considered some options in that regard. Eats at me to have everything in one spot. I store a lot of similar products, just in the typical sizes found in store. If I had a family or had inkling that there would be more mouths to feed, then the big bulk cans are very appealing. Though beans would work for me as I always make a huge pot of soup or chili and often incorporate several cans of beans. Hmm, ya got me reconsidering! I go through a lot of pumpkin (or canned butternut squash), not so much for the pumpkin aspect, but as a way to bulk up soups & chowders, add fiber and nutrients, yet doesnt impart a noticeable flavor. Rich and hearty. Thanks & take care!

I could see the canned beans being used for the old cowboy stew. Have a Dutch oven cooking for days on end just keep it hot and adding to it to feed who comes by. Otherwise I see meals with beans everyday that week you open it. Bean chip dip, bean stew, bean and cheese quesadillas, beans on toast. I enjoyed seeing what the beef actually looked like out of the can since I've never purchased that. Instant potatoes are universal for thickening stews as well as creating a side dish or even making potato buns.

I have a GFS close to my home. Whenever I go there I do buy in bulk. It was less expensive to buy number 10 cans of tomatoes than to can them myself. Also, the spices are a better value than small containers. Cheese is sold in 5 pound bricks. That is definitely a better deal. Learn the store and plan. As far and meat and beans go, buy a pressure canner and do it myself when you get meat on sale. The beans are absolutely delicious. Meat, beans and meat stock are Very Easy to can and it adds up quickly. Jars are not cheap, but they will last you a lifetime if you take care of them. Once you get a taste of home canned, you will never go back. You have to get a mindset of Long Term. God Bless all of you and good luck 😊

I used to buy sauerkraut in cans, but when they started making it in jars, I found the jar kind so much better. In the old days, the sauerkraut absorbed the tinny flavor of the cans. Perhaps the new cans have more protection so the flavor of the can doesn’t bleed into the kraut. Be sure to taste it before stocking large quantities.

Yes i am always stacking and preparing. Looking for a good used rv for my oldest grandson, he is finally going to move back to Texas and onto the property along with my middle daughter and her family. It will give my son-in-law some help around the farm getting it into a more self sufficient bit of property. Anyway, my middle daughter has taken a shine to the goats and has even started producing butter and starting to learn about cheese making. Anyway....please keep up the repackaging of foods for long term storage, there are many who dont know where to even begin. 👍

I think of my animals quite a bit. I do purchase their own specialty food, but I plan for them. I make about 1/2 the food the dogs eat, cooked rice with meat and vegetable scraps. Im growing amaranth, corn and buckwheat because thatll feed my chickens and goats. They can eat the seed heads and the whole plants. I havent found anything I could make that my cats would eat.

Thanks Greyman. Those big cans are great to dehydrate then vacuum seal. They rehydrate easily in hot water. I like the Valley chicken. If I found it at a good deal I would buy as many as I could of it. I use Better Than Bouillon in the individual packets. One of our salvage food stores was going out of business and I bought all he had at 10 cents per pack. Each pack makes 1 quart. I still have more than 4 quart jars packed full of beef, chicken, and veggie. Unfortunately I ran out of the ham and turkey. I had to buy it in jars to restock my pantry. My hubby still likes the cubes like you have so we have lots of them too. I've never had the canned sausage gravy. I need to get a can to try. Also I want to try the canned bulk sausage. I've heard mixed reports on it. Much Love ❤

I have been using BTB (better than boillion) for years and have been wishing it came in a powder form. Their website does not list it. Where did you buy it? Thank you.
@janpenland3686 Жыл бұрын
@@tennesseeterri It wasn't powder but the regular BTB in individual packets that seasons 1 qt of liquid. I bought it at a salvage store many years ago when they went out of business. I don't know if BTB still makes it in individual packets or not. They came 3 to a box and they are still good after all these years. Much Love ❤

Love the videos ! I’m trying to make my own can food as Much as possible ! I’m canning potatoes and carrots and even if I have to buy frozen food at the store I’ll buy it and pressure can it ! Making beef soups in canning jars with beef from the local farmer … The most we can have he better … any food is better than nothing ! Literally ready to just fix my house the best I can and sell ASAP as is and not take another year fixing things … so I can move to a house with a basement and have an actual proper pantry … literally have can food all over the kitchen floor in boxes and have so much more to can… Don’t forget to also stock up on clothes and extra shoes and linens… never know when the power will be out for a long period of time and can’t wash things … canning jars are an important investment too !!! That’s an impressive pantry … I’m working towards variety but getting what I can when I can … it’s definitely a long process when on a budget month to month

Sweet haul. Have always seen sauerkraut in the cans. It tastes just like the kraut in the glass jars. My opinion. Just bought local bread and butter corn from a local farmer cooked it all up cut it off the cob and have 2 debydrators full. More in the fridge to be dehydrated when these are done probably a total then of 6 dehydrators worth. Easy useable for winter. Potatoe flakes are a must there is a lot you can use them for not just mashed potatoes. Thanks for sharing your pantry with the world if you know what I mean by that comment. 😂 Bless you and your family Grey 🙏❤️🙏

Im new to the channel!!!! We sort of started preping 15 or so yrs ago but stopped. Now, we are moving from our native state to TX so we can have land, have a cow, chickens, a large garden and room for my 5 German Shepherds to play. I have had kraut in from the can many times. Growing up, that was the only way it was sold when i was a kid. I also used to make my own in my Huge crock. The kids complained lol But they are grown now!!!! Sam's often has the potato flakes in a HUGE container similar to a giant waxed milk carton. It is a 3.2 lb container and it is under $8.82? (Under $9) It is the Hungry Jack brand and they are pretty good. What i do is go to the spice section at Sam's Club and get some sore of spice....Garlic a Parm, Sour Cream & Onion or something like that. Add that, butter and milk. That spices up your instant potatoes. If i do mash real potatoes, i only do half of what i used to. I add instant and whip it with my mixer. (Im got tired of being the Martha Stewart mom and training dogs all day when my boys were growing up). They can't tell there are instant potatoes in it. Especially when i add spices to it. Those little envelopes of the flavored instant potatoes are EXPENSIVE for what you get considering you can make your own. 😊😊 🌯 🥔 🍄 🥔 🫑 🥔 🧄 🥔 🧅 🥔 🧈 🥔 🧀 🥔 🧂 🥔 🥛

Hello 👋 and welcome to the channel! 😁 Thanks so much for sharing a bit about yourself as well as some of your methods. That is a great deal on the spuds. I agree with what you mention. I wonder if folks understand that some foods we store or prep are substitutions for certain situations that may arise, like a bad harvest. Spices can really make a difference. I hope you have a great weekend. 🙏💛

@GreyManPrepping thnx so much. You too 🐾❤️🐾 My grandmother lived through the depression and pounded into me how to survive on nothing. How to grow food, make your own fertilizer, conserve water, preserve your food, and be thrifty. My dad taught me to hunt ( I'm the oldest, and I think he wanted a boy but got a girl....lol). My husband grew up on a farm and was an Eagle scout, so between the 2 of us....I think we have the skills to do ok. We are always looking to learn more. He has taken defense courses and weapons training, I do protection training with my dogs. We are CPR Cert, I have a little more .... can do stitches, minor surface stuff to injuries like cut to remove a foreign object, freshen tissue for good blood supply for better healing. I used to breed German Shepherds so I know that from top to bottom including how to do artificial insemination. Farm animals won't be any different. But we still need to get to TX. That's the biggest hurdle. We are packing as fast as we can. After almost 30 yrs in the same house, you accumulate a lot of crap. We don't need a fancy house, just something livable with land and water. We will get there!!!! 💪 I am excited to sit and watch your video with my husband.

I'm getting some good tips as you show us your hauls and items on the shelves. Quick question Grey, my vision pretty bad and it's the reason I'm asking: I don't see any hand written dates with a magic marker for instance on your store bought canned and packaged items regardless of size. Since I'm not able to see dates, how to you know which to use first if no dates of your own like dates you bought each item? Thanks a bunch and I enjoy tuning in to your channel. I use a fine point permanent marker on everything I buy to the front label or the top, depending on the shape and the way I have to stack them....except for things that never expire. Enjoy your weekend! ☺
@GreyManPrepping Жыл бұрын
Hello Sheba 😁👋 So I use a variety of methods for tracking my dates. From colored stickers on the bottom that correspond to my list. I do use a permanent marker on something's but I'm going to be using some new methods here soon which I'll discuss in a future video. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you have a great weekend! 🙏

Good looking pantry. Just a warning where you have those buckets stacked. The lids will bust through and cause the stack to topple and cause a big mess. I've had this happen stacked 3 high. Fair warning
@GreyManPrepping Жыл бұрын
Thank you, and appreciate the warning. We were planning to put a 1x6x8 between each stack for added stability. That should in theory prevent that from happening 🤞
