You can make your scaling easier by laying your ruler on the paper before you take the photo. Then you can show the ruler in illustrator and scale until the ruler in the pic and the ruler in illustrator match up.

Ive got a really cool tip for you. I created a file with all of my most used shapes, objects and measurement guides in it. I named it "BoneYard". I have one specific for each design program i use. When i start up illustrator, cad, photoshop etc. Its the first file i open. Then when i start the new design i can copy/paste from the "boneyard" to the new design with a simple file tab switch. Awesome time saver when your using repetitive objects. Another trick is to put line types in the boneyard. For instance punch holes or stitch lines. Then in your main design drawing you just use color coding during the design process. Like red for stitching and dont worry about dashing or dotting it. Then when your done designing, copy/paste the line types over from the boneyard then paint match the line types to your design stitch/punch lines. Jobs done. Print and coffee break. P.s. dont forget to clean up your drawing.

Great how to. If somebody wants to try this without spending lots of money on Adobe: I draw all my patterns in Inkscape and had good and repeatable results with it.

Great video, thanks. It seems really hard to find good videos describing the processes of template creation in Illustrator. A good alternative to Illustrator that is free is Inkscape. It's also a vector design application like Illustrator but it's free. I was wondering if you have any advice about seam allowances in templates, especially when creating an inside seam on bags?

suggestion to make it easier.... get the edges of the paper in, and you can scale the paper in the photo to the size of the page in Illustrator
@talltreesleather2 жыл бұрын
Hey Parker! I am curious, how do you set the page up so that when it is printed, it is printed to scale? For example, 1 inch in AI, actually prints 1 inch on the paper? When I print my patterns, it seems to always be ever so slightly off from the measurements in the program. Thanks!

This has been so helpful for me and i guess for a lot of us due to the comments! The problem im having right now is how to split in two different pages a big piece like you have in your last design that you show as a reference? What things do we have to consider to do that? Like spacing on the printer that is not going to show at all? Do you have a video like this one on that step??? That would be awesome!!!! Also, any idea on how to trace stitching lines for french style pricking irons? Thanks in advance!!
@MCS910133 жыл бұрын
It’s easy to do in printer settings. Basically tile print to PDF with or without an overlap (whatever you prefer). If you search KZbin for “illustrator tile print overlap” you’ll get lots of quick and easy videos. ☺️
@MCS910133 жыл бұрын
I should add - You can also do it in AI using artboards but printer settings is easier so your image in AI is always on 1 properly scaled artboard.

If you draw the belt through the holes it would sit crooked through the slots wouldn't it? Wouldn't you angle the slots also?

If your knife is 3/4" thick, don't you need to add 3/4" on each side? (Not 3/8") The leather comes up 3/4"on one side, across the width and down; or would this only apply if making a wet-formed sheath?

A question about the Stitchmaster or a similar machine. My wife needs a new sewing machine and I would like to do some leather projects. Would the Stitchmaster work well for my wife sewing cloth (with the proper needle) as well as leather ( with the proper needle) ?
@whitandpark3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it should do cloth okay, it'll do leather a lot better. That machine is made for making sails orginally so it really likes heavy weight material like canvas, leather, etc...If it's lightweight fabric, you'd be much better off with one that's made for that stuff

not yet. I'd like to but there are some logistics to figure out. They won't fit on a regular sheet of paper and it would get crazy complicated to try and piece it together so it would require the customer to figure out large format printing on their own and i'm trying to come up with a better plan.
