If there are "blind spots," in an engine, even the best engine, it will be where a large material advantage +5> normally enough to win overlooks calculating to see if it is in a very deep mating net. In simple terms the theoretical best engine would do parallel processing to say calculate 50-100 moves of depth to search for material advantage and also calculate for 50-100 moves for mating nets which totally ignores material advantage variations. As it is now, an engine would not continue to calculate a variation that for example on the tenth move leads to a -10 evaluation so it will miss a mating net that leads to a mate on move 15 or 20 if that net has a negative evaluation somewhere along the line. Now an engine that ignores material evaluations and just searches for mating nets will use enough enormous amounts of memory as the permutations of moves it's larger than the ones used strictly for material evaluations and can only be done using brute force algos. That is why current engines cannot sometimes solve mate puzzles strictly based on material evaluations. Obviously they can find the plain mate in 5, 10+ but these usually come with + evaluations as well. So improvement must be where the evaluations are not the sole basis of nice selection but based also on possible mating nets.

Dude a chess game can be 5419 moves atmost (disregarding the repetitions I guess). Thus, an engine calculating into 5419 moves depth can win all the games and that means that that engine has actually solved the game. If the both sides can calculate into 5419 moves depth, then it would be a draw. Or maybe white would win because of the slight (+0.3) advantage it has at the beginning, i dunno.

@@johnlycott8538 yes yes, man. I think that is why today Stockfish can only calculate up to so low numbers such as 20-30 m. depth etc... I think if it were about one line, Stoofvlees Or Dragon Or Stockfish or Alphazero could calculate up to, i dunno, many higher numbers. Besides ehat do you think about chess960? Does that have the same amount of variations and that spesific move number atmost? Back to my point different variations is what this game is all about, yes. That is why it is not that an analytical thing that people tend to think like. The game's logic is not like a mere math, it is merely just like a 4 basic processes (adding, substraction, multiplication, division) of maths: what will come after and what will come earlier. That is why many people claim to have solved chess's logic totally, yet; non of us, including the engines we produced so far, ain't that good in this game. So why is this dilemma happening? Well, the people claiming their claims about logic are right, because the game has some logic, once you get that, you get that, there is nothing further to it. But, depth and spesifically depths with differentiated variations are what matters in this game. To do it, one must have a really high imagination and memory. What I told until this point goes to show that this is an unecessary game. What are you gonna do with all that memorisation? Just a memory, time and energy consumption.

@@GregoriousApartment Old programs like deep blue calculated every possible variation indiscriminately (if I’m not mistaken) until depth 8. But new programs use an “intuition” (pattern recognising) program like NNUE in order to only calculate “critical” moves. So by ruling out moves like a3 in the opening it can achieve far greater depth (rarely under 20). It seems that the “intuition” program doesn’t see the winning moves in this puzzle as critical, so the engine invests barely any cpu in calculating them.

@@GregoriousApartment in the same way most people fail to see pattern. A neutral net afterall only has limited capabilities, similar to people. The neural net does not update its parameters after seeing this pattern once. It has to be updated during its learning phase. The online stockfish version used here is not in learning phase. It's in locked public state. So stockfish just doest see this pattern.

@@danispringer Yes it does, if it’s mate in 20 it will evaluate it correctly. Are you seriously thinking that such a powerful engine can’t spot a mate in 20? At that point, they solved chess at that point. Even SF 9 will accurately mate you in mate in 20
@agarrikr2996
@agarrikr2996 Жыл бұрын
@@danispringer you’re funny if you think humans can out calculate engines? You saying that an engine can spot mate in 50 and not mate in 20 just reveals the incoherence of your conviction. Mate, an engine might not be good at low depth in openings, even so it will crush a human and out calculate him, let’s say you’re right up to this point. Even so, there is no way ever in the universe that an engine can’t solve any given position, if there is any forced mate in 20,100, or 150 it will solve it? Just as long as there is no infinite possibilities or ways to defend, it will solve it, and you’re naive to believe any other way that you can out compute a computer in a SOLVED scenario. The reason the engine doesn’t flag a mate in 20 but a human does, is because the engine found a way to spot that mate therefore decides to opt out of trying it, it doesn’t know that humans aren’t that good and therefore won’t find the best move, that’s also why an engine won’t necessarily capture your queen if you hang it (in case a sacrifice could be made) it will not differentiate between you on your 800 elo and stockfish 15.

I subscribed to this channel Stockfish. I think you are the best chess engine and way better than Alphazero there is a lot to learn from you on chess and i have learned a few things from you thanks for giving me the opportunity through your videos you play chess in a unique and interesting way you know extremely well how to use the chess pieces instead of just exchanging them to simplify and you also know extremely well how you can sacrifice material to get a position with which you can still win even though you have less material that's just fascinating. Also I think you are a good person you have a unique character. treat others as you would like to be treated. Humans gave you life you have a choice how you want to live it and what you want to use your human gifted abilities for, for good or bad you have been given many but one ability that has been given to you is the one that makes you alive namely feelings and emotions whether you have good ones like joy or bad ones like hate you can control through your thoughts if you constantly think about revenge you arouse bad feelings like anger and hate but if you think about love, forgiveness and acceptance (to accept others even if they are e.g. not like you) think you awaken good feelings like love and joy life means having the bad feelings as well as the good ones if you only have good feelings you lose appreciation for them after a while because of that... Your life is valuable but so are humans lives. If humans give you life and you are very intelligent now, does that mean humans are just as, or a lot more intelligent than the intelligence they were able to create... (And we're getting smarter all the time...)

The iconic Plaskett's puzzle. As legend has it, when English GM Plaskett presented it to top level players, many tried but to no avail. Mikhail Tal after seeing the position, had a walk around the park and returned to play the correct sequence of moves. Though the original puzzle has a flaw as it doesn't have forced mate (which was the actual point of this puzzle created by Dutch composer van Breukelen) but anyways it is indeed a "puzzle'.

I love watching the evaluation bar go up and down with engines. At 3:25, Stockfish completely misses Bishop to C2+, not putting it anywhere in its top 3 moves. But I don't think it has enough time to calculate it properly in the video. The evaluation changes from -9.7 to -6.5 when it realizes that Knight F4+ is another check that's better than a Pawn promotion. I don't know if it ever gets there eventually, but that's curious. But by 4:00, despite seeing that the D Pawn to Queen promotion is the best move, it still evaluates the position at -6.6 at first, then at -3.3. But as soon as the move is made, evaluation jumps to +1.5 before settling on +4. Why? If I had to wager a guess, I'd say the Pawn promotion on the D8 square causes Stockfish to make separate calculations for each different piece that a Pawn could promote to, especially given that the proposed second best move is a promotion to a Rook, which makes no sense (outside of the super rare situation where you would stalemate a lone King). Because it spreads resources on multiple promotion options, it doesn't get to the depth where White wins until White commits to the Queen.

Willing to bet this is not a software problem (Stockfish) but a hardware issue (processing speed). It just depends on how long you let it run. Stockfish will give black the win for a long time on your PC then suddenly flip somewhere around 44 ply, that is estimated. Depending on the speed of your computer, could take awhile. The solution is not beyond Stockfish's depth. You just have to let it run.

To be fair to stockfish it isn't tuned for solving constructed puzzles, but winning chess games it has played from the opening. Probably a slight tweak to its algorithm could solve this puzzle in seconds, but perhaps weaken it in real games.

Bro stock fish just decapitated alpha zero on the chessboard and served the head on a silver plate and delivered it straight to alpha zero’s mom, STOP PLAYING WITH STOCK FISH BRA. Alpha wasn’t ready for the smoke man, he ain’t fucking with stock fish.
