Our overnight ferry on the Baltic Sea from Stockholm Sweden to Helsinki Finland was one of our favorite travel experiences. From cruising through the stunning Stockholm Archipelago to feasting on a Scandinavian smorgasbord of unique food this was an unbeatable way to get from point A to point B. Wish we could wake up in a new city all the time!

Hi from Finland :) The ferry bring memories from childhood, a cruise to Stockholm used to be a summer tradition. You didn't need a passport but technically you travelled abroad :) Nowadays, tax free sales are not possible between EU states but these ferries make a short stop in the autonomous Åland islands in Finland. Åland has a special status in EU which enables the sale of tax free goods. So the cruises go on.

Thanks for watching the video! We really enjoyed the ferry trip. That must have been a great childhood vacation. We hope to make it back to Finland in the future, Helsinki was great but we didn't get much time. Let us know if there is anything else we need to check out next time!

Yeah same as a Swede. I’d take a ferry to Estonia and Finland as a kid most summers and it was always a good vibe

Most important when you eating Scandinavian buffet is that you don’t mix everything. You start with fish, then cold meat and maybe salads and then warm dishes. Finally desserts and cheese. If you have eaten buffet on right way you have used 7 plates. Also important that you always take a new plate

I rode the ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki in 1981on a trip to visit friends in Europe. Our cabin was at the waterline and you could hear ice scraping past the curve of the hull all night. For breakfast I got a yogurt from a vending machine. I was perplexed by the flavor. It was familiar, but unplaceable. Finally, at the end of the yogurt cup I recognized it: it tasted exactly like Elmer's Glue.

All the cabins , even the cheapest has their own bathrooms. But yes, there is bunkbeds, in 3-4 person cabins. But allways 2 beds down. Exept 1 person cabin.

Thanks for the info! The cheaper ones don't really sound that bad. We might need to consider that in the future if we get another chance to take a Viking Line ferry!

And I don't think you need to share the cabin with strangers, even if you're travelling solo or having a three or four bed cabin and you are only two people.

The Viking Line terminal gives you a beautiful view of Stockholm while the Silja Line terminal gives you a depressing view of the industrial harbors !

Luckily i can walk out from ship and see stockholm city, i dont need good views from terminal, silja serenade and symphony are so much better ferries than viking gabriella.

We also had the opportunity to experience that overnight cruise. Enjoying the ship's way through the archipelago is definitely a must. And it's a cheap way to spend the night when visiting the area. Thanks for sharing it.

If you are not on a tight schedule, I would suggest taking a ferry to Turku from Stockholm. That route is much more interesting than the route to Helsinki. Helsinki does not have an archipelago like Turku does. It is much more open sea all the way to Stockholm whereas Turku route is littered with small islands. Turku is the old capital of Finland and with its history an interesting place to visit. Helsinki has been the capital only since 1812. From Turku you can get to Helsinki in a couple of hours by train.

You didn't mention the cost, but that ferry has a lot to offer. If I were in either city with a day to spare, I'd consider taking the round trip. The cabin looked excellent, and because I like fish I would have been happy with the buffet. I imagine there are other activities onboard to keep people occupied.

The cost was very reasonable. The pricing varies by room type and meal options. We paid about €300 total roundtrip for our room with the dinner buffet and a breakfast buffet both ways. For transportation, 2 nights of accommodations, and 4 meals, it was quite a deal! There was a schedule of different activities throughout the trip but we didn't really check out many of the options. We had been quite busy and just wanted to sleep those nights! At least one of the bars had a stage where they had some live music and a comedian performing a standup routine. The ship also had a spa and sauna which Jenny did get a chance to try out and enjoyed quite a bit. From the views to the food and everything else, the ferry was a great experience that we would highly recommend. We really hope to do it again someday!

I have traveled that route many times. The price can vary a lot. From literally free of charge to €2000 one way. Typically the free travle is in a E cabin, but sometimes you can get them in C and B... i actually got a free A cabin once (due to being a regular costumer)

If you take a night train in Sweden the sleeper cars come with their own toilets and the 1st class one's come with their own shower while the 2nd class one's have a shower in the corridor.

That sounds amazing, we’ll have to look into where the trains go for another trip that way. Hopefully not too long in the future!

@@AndersonsArrive One thing people do is take the night train from Stockholm to Narvik and then take one of the Hurtigruten ships down the Norwegian coast. The Iron Ore Line in Northern Sweden and Norway is known as the most beautiful Railway in Sweden.

You kind of took the wrong company. If you want to ride to Helsinki Silja line is for sure the best, but if you want to ride to Turku, Viking line is the best.
