Be careful Ben. I’m not going to pretend to be a biologist or a fish expert. I also know that you’re an experienced angler and probably forgot more about bass than I know.....but I personally know that those blue cats are straight HOGS!! They eat any and every fish, crab, bait fish, etc...and large quantities too!! They’re a serious issue here in the Chesapeake Bay. They literally are dominating every body of water that they’re in. Just a heads up bro. You may want to keep an eye on those.

There's people with letters after their name which may rebuttal me, no way to argue that since I'm a nobody Joe but I would never introduce catfish into a productive bass SMALL pond (bigger water is more forgiving), that is if you still wanted big bass in 5 years. I've seen this a dozen times or more. The catfish will take over and your bass population will dwindle down to almost nothing, with the one's left stunted small due to competition for food even if you're feeding. Hope you really like catching catfish.

The Simple Bucket Test Fill two, 5-gallon buckets with water from your pond. Buckets should be placed indoors, away from direct sunlight. Add a penny-sized piece of drywall to one of the buckets. Leave the other bucket untouched. Check each bucket once every 24 hours to determine if the water has begun to clear. If the water clears in the water-only bucket, over a one week period, then your water clarity is likely being disrupted by something physical, such as animal activity or recent weather patterns. If the water in the water-only bucket does not clear, then the cause of the problem is likely a chemical factor. If the water in the drywall and water bucket clears, it is likely that an application of gypsum would clear the water and reverse the chemical factors affecting water clarity.

I wouldn't add the gypsum. The turbidity in the water is full of nutrients and helps the bugs and therefore the catfish. Catfish generally live in muddy water. If you want to improve water quality without taking away nutrients then add water plants. But natural ponds without binding the particles to the gypsum will be better long term for your fish.

Gypsum also adds a little bit of salt to the water which kills parasites. You don't need that much gypsum. I cleaned a 1 acre pond with just 2 sheets of sheet rock.

Yea blue catfish occupy the same eco niche as bass do as they are a predatory fish. So they take away from the bio available poundage that would go into the total overall bass poundage of your lake. Channel cats are good cause they literally eat shit from the bottom of the lake. Throw flatheads and blue cats into any lake you want to ruin for bass fishing

Then in the next pond on our neighbors property we stocked that one full of catfish. Watching you do the same to your own ponds takes me back. And motivates me to get another pond someday!
