@@wheresallthezombies Many do not - especially with such huge overlap in audience. Many of the lost young men that find their way to Holiday and thereby stoicism have very few options in front of them. These youngsters often find themselves led to dark places by these shysters or are offered meaningless froo froo solutions to help them cope with the things that may be going on in their lives. Holiday presents another choice - a well tested philosophy with a pedigree going back to the ancient world. And quite frankly, for alot of people it wouldn't be brave. Thank you! It needed to be said. I watched the video on “Aperture” that attacked you and attempted to classify you with the broicism gang. I was appalled at the misrepresentation of your views. I’m glad you have made it crystal clear where you stand. When I first started reading stoic philosophy, it was because of you. You pointed me in the right direction and I read many of the books you mentioned. It took me a while to understand how the four virtues interact with the other aspects of stoicism. Stoicism is a path to kindness, to justice, to understanding other people, and most of all, to understanding ourselves and our place in the world and how we can be better people.

I have to defend Alex Hormozi. He also has his morning routine, even though he doesn't call it that. He drinks coffee and gets to work. What he said about morning routines is that people, instead of getting to work, feel the need to do five other things first, and because of that, they start working after 3 or 4 hours.
@JezelJordan16 сағат бұрын
Yup I agree. Alex is a good dude but his focus is different than most lifestyle gurus. He's all about hustle culture and if that's your thing then he's your man, but it doesn't necessarily align with all stoic ideas. But he doesn't fit on this list with the rest of these grifters

Don't confuse criticizing the behavior for criticizing the person. Would Ryan be criticizing, highlighting, the people in this video if not for their behaviors? No. He's not highlighting the good things about these people because this video isn't about the person he's criticizing, it's about the behavior that they have publicly displayed. If they didn't display these bad behaviors publicly, he'd just find someone else who does and talk about them. He could have picked different people, in fact. In "Ego is the Enemy" he talks about the ego of John DeLorean, for example. People who have a problem with Ryan Holiday criticizing their idol in this video have lost the script. People aren't good or evil. Good and evil are the things we do. Our actions, decisions, intentions, words, and characteristics thereof are what are good or evil. You are what you repeatedly do, so guide your actions by the four virtues and not by ego, anger, selfishness, or knee-jerk reactionism.

To simply use a moment in time to discredit all the good these people have also brought, is foolish. We are not one dimensional… to bring another’s inadequacy to light for the purpose of self promotion and entertainment is shameful regardless of which “side” you’re on. There are no sides. We all have this wild notion that we are in competition with one another. There is no competition. We are a nation and world crippling itself to get ahead. Promote the good in each other, learn and be aware of our mistakes and inadequacies, and forgive so that we can grow together. To bring evil to light with no intent of growth is to promote evil. It’s too easy to look at the people we are “better” than to feel good about who we are. That doesn’t feel like stoicism to me. This is the same reason I cut out religion. So it's interesting to me because I watched the first half of this video and then had to pause for life. When I came back to listen to the rest, I'd first seen the comments about his perspective on psychedelics and had some pause, as I'm pro-psychedelics, but not having listened to Ryan's perspective on it, it seems quite measured, though ultimately skeptic (as he says), and I think that's very fair of someone like him who (I am making an educated guess) hasn't done them. I don't know if Ryan struggles from clinical depression, or any other profoundly debilitating issues like C-PTSD etc, but imo, his caution - and perspective that regards these things as "magic pills" - very much makes sense. If you're someone that HAS these struggles in life, then you know that you ARE doing the work, taking these substances therapeutically are NOT actually "magic" bullets of any sort - anymore than a cast and crutch magically help your broken leg to heal. They're simply tools that assist. And not all tools work for everyone, and tools CAN be abused, of course. I don't know that I'd call myself a Stoic, but it's certainly a philosophy that I hold dear. It seems to me that it's wise to consider what people I admire (via their words and actions) say and do, and then consider that for myself, as it applies to my life and my sense of rightness in the world, but to not take those people's words and actions *personally* in a way that impedes my sense of rightness. Ryan has a certain lived experiences, and his skepticism and words of caution make sense for him, and he's sharing those, as he should - we then get to consider how, or indeed if, any insight he's offering fits into our world view. And we can do that without making any volatile judgement call on Ryan himself.

I can even understand their inclusion in this video - not as leaders of toxic online conversations, but as people who are often quoted in those heavily edited videos that spread toxic masculinity, but I think because you did not acknowledge what good they have done, as well as challenge figures of different political views, and called them names (very Trump-like, by the way) - this just came across as using stoicism to push an agenda pre election. 22:36 Alex is actually talking about your ability to do what is required regardless of whether you got through your routine for today, it is about having a routine, but that routine should not be a crutch or a precondition to do what is required to do today.

I don't think Ryan concerns himself with the people whose opinions he criticized. I think he is concerned about us and who we let ourselves be influenced by. This was great!

Going after a lot of giants here. I Love that you have taken your life experiences of doing really hard things like… reading book's… and posting videos about what others have said in those books… and now are positioned to criticize people that have done hard things. Ryan’s appeal has always evaded me. If my goal was to read books and go on walks, RH would totally be my mentor. He is the GOAT at reading books and walking!!!

The critiques of many of the figures highlighted, except perhaps of Peterson, are spot-on. But if he didnt want this to seem like a leftwing political hit piece, he could’ve included critiques of nonsense from prominent leftists, of which there is much.

Telling J. Peterson doesn't have empathy then selling a mattress all the while hiding behing greats by throwing their quotes at us. Even if this video was not political it's still not worthy of a philosophical content.

I think you may have misunderstood Alex Hormozi’s tweet there. He’s not advocating for not having a routine, he’s just trying to tell people that the work is not going to get done in the morning routine, and the less time you spend between waking up and starting work, the more you will do. It’s exactly the same story as you told about that dance choreographer, she needs to get to the cab, Alex needs to get to his desk, the stories are parallel. I’m also very surprised out of all that Alex says you would focus on that minute detail, and bypass his other messages that have been repeated so many times

Ya but if you have a high quality routine that you do before each work day the work day goes better !!
@laddrop6779Күн бұрын
@@liambeatz3158 not arguing against that, it’s a fair point. Just thought our stoic pal misinterpreted Alex’s idea

@@laddrop6779 Yeah and Alex doesn't have a routine, he gets up and just dives into work. I'm not saying he'd be more successful with a routine, but he would be happier.
@TiagoCASousaКүн бұрын
I think you didn’t interpret very well Hormozi’s advice. He is saying to not have a morning routine for those people who have a 3h morning routine and at the end of it are exhausted and wonder why they can’t get anything done. It’s better to just get to the thing you have to do and don’t waste any time, that can be your routine. Otherwise, great video! Keep going with the good work

I’m a fan of your content and your message but this seems like a miss particularly with Peterson. I don’t think you’ve seen a lot of his content, I think you are in a bubble and are going off things you’ve heard. You’re an author, read his books, watch his lectures.
