Through my twenties I dreamt of, and worked towards, being a director of a major organisation. I got there in my thirties. I was over the moon. 3 months later I realised it was a job, a title, and I was working ridiculous hours, stressed out. Be careful of what you wish for. I walked out aged 46. I went pretty much off grid in a farmhouse in France. Now I have less....but so much more. I see the seasons, I rest, exercise, study, have pastimes. I have TIME.

I was lucky enough to grow up with a man that was dying of cancer. He survived 15 years when he was only given 6 months to a year. He taught me humility, kindness, forgiveness, mental fortitude, and many more beautiful life lessons. He died when I was 17 and I'm now 33, but the wisdom that he bestowed upon me, still resonates in everything I do in life. I don't have money, I don't have a great career, I dont have a big house or nice car, but what I do have, is happiness, a job that I love, very little anxieties or fears, a beautiful garden, a connection to the universe, my music, art, writing, no addictions, a beautiful son and wife, and I travel as much as possible. I've always felt happy because of his lessons. I never realized how grateful of him I was, until I reconnected with his son, many years later. His son lives in a canvas tent in the woods and is completely self sufficient. He's happier than most people I know. Thanks Blain.

And I am grateful to have been able to share that journey with him and blessed for insights & changes. Would I choose that experience? To have that happen to my son? Of course not! I do not wish to be happy all of the time. Being happy all the time could be as much of a neurological burnout as being sad all of the time. Let my baseline be contentment. When something joyful comes along let me experience happiness to the fullest and return to my steady state of contentment. If something tragic, let me grieve for experiencing these and other emotions in balance with reason are what being human is all about.

That was just what I needed to hear today. I'm working on getting rid of stuff-- bad relationships, desiring material things, clutter, poor eating, drinking, controlling business outcomes, and worry. Now I'm thinking of value-- personal relationships, helping others, kindness, music, and dedication to my field, and giving quietly without expecting. Then I can be my own best friend. The question I ask is, what can I do, not what can I have? Doing is much better than having, and to a large degree, so is wanting.

I feel sure we are allowed to share in the bounty of Creation, it is simply a case of allowing the greater power to decide our needs, rather than insisting we know what we need, and desiring them in our constant daily thoughts. Thus, we need to enter a place of stillness, by which we can connect with the many wells of silence and wisdom in the beyond, that hear our needs even on the smallest levels, and convey their answers to us through our intuition, visions and dreams. Then, we begin to learn the most important law in the universe, the art of receiving, which is deeply embedded in the great law of balance!!!
@nialloneill5097
@nialloneill5097 4 жыл бұрын
And it is also totally embedded in the law that thy can only reap what thy has sown. Thus, we must first give, but as you rightly said, selflessly, and unexpectantly!!!

The Dichotomy of control to me is simple yet powerful.Had a practical experience last night.Came home really exhausted from work and all i needed was a sound rest only to be met with loud cries of my little daughter after all attempts by her mum to stop her even by breastfeeding did not work.lying on the bed with my eyes closed trying all i could to fall asleep in the midst of all the unbearable noise from my little daughter.I nearly shouted on her but imediately the phrase the "dichotomy of control" occured to me(in my head) and i became conscious of the fact that,shouting on her would rather worsen the situation but instead,i could put on my cloth and patiently leave the room for some minutes and come after the mum has suceeded.I swear did not regret after i did that.I love Stoicism.I am getting practical finally. Good stuff Maynard!! :) Zeno, in developing the philosophy of Stoicism, was able to work out a practical means to circumvent the default involuntary stimulus-reaction thought system that is the body's mind. Nowadays also commonly referred to as being the "ego." The ego's domain is past thought and/or future thought. It cannot exist in the present moment. Stoicism is a system of thought that is under the individual's control and when practiced, allows the individual to be in the present moment without an obligation to judge. In other words, practicing stoicism provides the individual an efficacious means to wall off the ego. The function of the ego is analogous to a tennis ball machine with an endless supply of tennis balls. The machine is stuck on automatic and it is incessantly firing one tennis ball after another out into the thought space of the past or the thought space known as the future. The ego's "tennis balls" are thoughts in the form of clusters of mental image pictures. The ego requires that everything be judged either more or less and to do this requires comparisons be made to thoughts and experiences in the past so what might happen in the future can be imagined. Unfortunately, individuals will consider the ego's thoughts as being their own and doing so leads to the invention of a false self that is the person they believe they are. Practicing stoicism gives the individual a way to block the constant chatter noise of the ego and discover their own thoughts and actual self in the present moment. The ego's motto is "you are lacking" and this makes for a world where "almost" and "if only..." are standard fare. The ego's idol is MORE. For one to obtain happiness in the ego thought system, one must perpetually seek for MORE. Stoicism while being a viable means to wall off the ego, cannot unplug the ego. To unplug the ego one must go to metaphysics. When it comes to metaphysics there are myriad paths that appear in perception in just as many forms, but the content beyond the form; i.e., symbols, words, practices, rituals, etc., is the same from one path to the next. All the paths will eventually arrive at the same destination; the eradication of the ego and the individual remembering what and who they really are. The difference between one path and another (other than the form it seems to appear in) is it's length in time from point A to point B. And when it comes to time, there is never not enough time to make the journey from point A to point B regardless how circuitous and lengthy a path might be. The purpose of time is to be the space wherein the journey seems to happen. If you don't know where to start with metaphysics, I suggest exploring Aaron Abke's channel. He talks about several different paths and he has a way of presenting these concepts that are completely antipathetic to the ego thought system in a way they can be received and understood. IMO, Stoicism and metaphysics make for an unbeatable duo!

I grew up in a very strict household with controlling parents that lecture me everyday and dictated my future. I broke free from them at 19 and move out on my own. It was a growing experience for all of us. I’ve always been a free spirit since then. I love my parents, they are my rock and my home. ❤️ my life advice to all is that there’s is beauty in everything and everyone, never stop seeing it. Also money is a means of exchange, don’t just collected, exchange it. Also, ask for help, it opens many beautiful doors and will fill your life with more joy and beauty! Always be honest even if it makes you “look bad”. 🤗 always be respectful and compassionate. And lastly, nothing is of real value anyways. 🌈

I have a phone, hand lotion, and a box of tissues. I have everything I need to make myself happy. I am also at work. Thank you Mr. Holiday for teaching me that Marcus Aurelius wants me to be happy at work.

Being grateful for the process; being grateful to be alive; and being grateful that the Creator has allowed me another day to practice being sincere, honest, and calm are the things that make me happy, not keeping “score” of my oft misguided notions of what/where my life should be. As Bill Walsh said, “focus on the processes and systems, and the score takes care of itself”.

So much of our society says “you’re not enough/this is not enough.” On Tv, we watch famous, beautiful, rich people. In our professions, there’s always someone better than us/higher up. Always another ring to reach for. So easy to focus on that vs this life, right now is enough.

I'm 48. Have adhd and everything that comes with it. For me it's been drug addiction, depression, insomnia, anxiety etc etc. But I've been trying to get this stoicism in my life and it certainly doesn't make things worse. No it seems to help me at least a little bit so far. This overthinking and anxiety is one thing that it seems to help me with

Love how the stoic philosophy kinda aligns with teachings of Christianity- living with gratitude and taking life one day at a time. Powerful truths. Only God is in control and truly sovereign.

Great video. I think it’s okay to have an insatiable desire for success but keep yourself detached from the results of your work. Like you said, fall in love with the process. 🙌🏽

Very interesting Ryan. Acceptance of things you can't control is, like you say, crucial to happiness. 😊 But I also think self improvement, and desiring a better future, is not wrong. That seems to be something that is within our control, to some extent.

Seth Godin Said something that stuck with me on this very topic. Paraphrasing Godin: I’ve published many books. Some on The NY Times Best Sellers list, yet the vast majority of Americans have never heard of me. Why is that? Because I have a target audience. I’m writing for a specific audience and THEY are the ones who support me financially. Godin isn’t concerned nor does he care if everybody is buying his books. He’s successful and enjoys it. He’s not trying top his previous published book by writing something even better. Not downgrading high placed goals or success…it’s about enjoying it when you get it and have it. Then move onto the next thing.

Maybe the friendly correspondence between the Apostle Paul and Seneca was authentic? Paul preached a number of these concepts as standards of Christian conduct.
