Mahalo for the real talk and civil conversation to help articulate, describe, express, and eventually identify for ourselves these complex feelings, ideas, phenomenon that are indeed...disturbing to realize when we finally see it. An appreciative fan of you both!

It's so true how difficult it can be to confront these complex feelings once we start to understand them. Its almost like breaking through a fog to see things clearly for the first time. Have you found any specific practices or habits that help you stay grounded when those realizations hit?

36:04 You hit the nail squarely on the fkn head, Ryan. I came to that conclusion a year ago. It has always been a part of the American psyche, however, since the 80s, many prominent politicians have fanned the flames of that political and cultural philosophy. The result is where we are today. One of the reasons why the social support system has been successful in countries like Finland, Sweden and Norway is due to the fact that a strong sense of community has been part of the national consciousness for centuries. It will take generations to undo the damage done to the American soul over the past 30-40 years.

@TheStoicBeacon-TGG3 күн бұрын
I completely agree with you! Senecas letters offer timeless wisdom that could be incredibly relevant to our modern lives, especially when it comes to the idea of self-discipline. His insights on managing our emotions and thoughts are so powerful. Have you read any particular letter from him that stood out to you? I think diving deeper into his letters could provide some real clarity on how we approach challenges today.

I've been following Rich's channel for years now. It's been exciting and inspirational to listen to his guests, to his puns with Adam or even his monologues :) But recently something has changed - I am not able to finish listening to almost any of the interviews. I think for me, the learning element has disappeared. As if previously Rich was trying to grasp something new himself and using his skills to extract and form that idea from the guests; but now it's just Rich trying to say something instead of the guests... and it results in all sounding the same. Maybe it's time to level up the game and do more complex things? Or maybe I just need to switch the channel myself 🙂 Just reflecting here.

The objective is not to signal virtue, it’s to embody virtue. The cause of the pejorative connotation around “virtue signaling,” and “social justice warriors” is the hypocrisy. Accountability is a standard you hold yourself to. And nobody’s perfect, but if you flagrantly disregard the standard you hold others to, people will naturally have a negative reaction to that.

I like to use the water bottle analogy.. hold a water bottle in front of you. The water bottle represents the truth of all things; human nature, the universe, life, ect. Me, the person holding the water bottle represents the observer or point of perception. Now find someone to be a second observer and ask them to describe the water bottle in the greatest detail possible. And I'll do the same.. although looking at the same water bottle we each have a completely different perspective. We are both right and wrong about the truth of the matter. (Pun intended) Philosophies and religions strive for the truth. Some believe their perspective is closer to the truth. And it may be, but It's our responsibility to continue expanding our awareness and perception to see the bigger picture. Continue observing and we will see that there is truth in all of them. And they are all there to help us 'BE', better.

As Laertius wrote over 1800 years ago, "Stoics have nothing to say about happiness, in general or specific." Epicureans had it figured out in antiquity and stoics were a bit of a joke, considered by most to be hypocrites more concerned with "appearing stoic" for the sake of self-aggrandizement. Little has changed. It's sad that such an empty school of philosophy had such a resurgence, and the irony is that it had a resurgence because Stoicism tells its followers that they are tougher or stronger than others and there is an appeal to being told that. "Ego is the enemy." Indeed.
@incurableromantic40063 ай бұрын
"Stoicism tells its followers that they are tougher or stronger than others" Really? I'm rather a fan of stoicism, and it always seemed to me to make a cardinal virtue of humility. Could you give me some examples of where stoisicm tells its followers to look down on others?
@NikeonaBike3 ай бұрын
@@incurableromantic4006 Ofcourse it doesn't tell them to do so explicitly, no more than Christianity tells its faithful to judge sinners, and yet the world is so. But when your core philosophy is about building up an outer wall, about tolerating the intolerable, and accepting suffering, it isn't long before the practitioner feels to have risen above the rest of humanity, regardless of how many admonitions for humility are included. This is self-evident with the modern popularity of Stoicism. It tells its practitioner they are strong and strong willed, and is thus attractive to those who want that trait or want others to believe they possess it. Wearing stoicism on your sleeve is, after all, quite popular and profitable in the 21st century.
@incurableromantic40063 ай бұрын
@@NikeonaBike Well, any moral or philosophical movement that becomes popular enough will inevitably attract some people to it for negative reasons - but that's a problem with human nature, not with the movement itself.

@winkingfox71252 ай бұрын
I disagree with you there. I think you made a totally surface mischaracterization of the stoic school. They speak a lot about happiness, however sometimes (fairly or not) criticize the epicureans for seeking a shallow personal happiness in physical comfort (the stoics were big on being involved in one’s community through public service ), a selfish happiness, by avoiding all potential sources of disturbance ( such as marrying and raising a family) . The stoics talked a lot dealing with anxiety and uncertainty , clear impediments to happiness. “When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive-to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” Marcus Aurelius. Seneca said “True happiness is... to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future.” Zeno said man’s work was the practice of virtues, which alone produces happiness. So yeah just a little bit there just to counter your characterization of the stoic school, which I think is not at all accurate .
