In my younger years, late fall and relying on blazes on trees for hiking in the Southern US App Mtns and the trail was completely covered in fallen leaves. No compass or map and we found ourselves lost. What we thought was the trail was not. If you have ever been in that position, it changes you. The importance of what these valuable gentlemen are trying to make you aware of could possibly save your life. Thank you Stoker for bringing awareness and practicality to this important skill.

Well anyway, I knew people in my younger years also that already knew everything without life lessons. Turns out they were just fooling themselves and looking like that to others and low and behold it works the same for people who are older as well. Thanks for the visual.

To much reliance on technology has always been an issue, in the 70s it was prepare for the big earthquake. A local news agency said bring your kits to the station and we can check what you have, people showed up with electric can openers.

Been lost once in the mountains while elk hunting in NE Oregon. I knew the area well but a thick fog rolled in while I was tracking elk and you could see maybe a 100 ft. That fog disorientated me to the point that I had no clue to where I was. Decide to camp out until it lifted. Another hunter came upon me and he was lost and as it turned out heading in the wrong direction. I suggested he stick with me until it cleared but he continued on. I made it out and a search party was needed to rescue him. I did not have a compass or map with me which is a mistake I have not repeated.

Great information and awesome to see you two together. Master the basics and get out and practice. Best advice there is. Learn from Stokers or Pathfinders videos or books like FM 3-25-26. I’ve found 2 books on land Nav that had false information in them when it came to declination. Semper Fi Stoker!

This philosophy aligns to how I view land navigation from my time spent in the outdoors and hunting as comparison to the land nav training in the military. They both have their place but military land nav really far less so.

Like most skills one must use map and compass skills often enough to stay skilled. I could probably find my way now, but not with the precision I once had, use it or lose it.
