STONE DRESSING TABLE - Building a Stonemason's Sturdy Worktable : Weather your planning on doing drystone work or stone masonry you’ll need a good work table to dress your stone. The stone dressing table, sometimes referred to as stone bankers, in this video is an easy building using scrap, leftover and repurposed lumber. The working height of the table is just over 32” high and the wear surface is 27”x27”. Make sure you take some time to watch the other videos about chainsaw milling logs or what’s happening around the Workshop at The Gardens. Please subscribe to the channel and leave us a comment! We most certainly would appreciate it if you did! Share what you’ve done! Best to you and your projects! Enjoy!

'Banker' is the term for the stonemasons table. Thick top surface mandatory. This helps to absorb the dynamic blows, keep the energy in the stone while keeping the stone from 'dancing' around as you whale on it. Single2x top decking creates a 'drum' , which is loud and will wear out soon. Go 3''+ thickness at least. Exposed metal screws/bolts on top are fine for crude operators, but this will scratch your stone if your work is of a refined nature. Screw/nail heads wear down on top, so removal is challenged. One of my current 'bankers' was built in 2008 and still rolling. Metal side strip with rare earth magnets holds chisels and light hammers, as the top can get cluttered. A shelve below the top surface is handy. Standard PT fir. 4X PT legs, 4''x12'' PT deck. (And 20# of screws and nails added over the years. 'Bankenstein') If you work in the wet, put sealer/plates on the leg cut bottoms to mitigate rot. Short 'bankers for big tall stones, wide 'Bankers' for flagstone cutting. Find where the arc of your hammer strike is most ergonomic and the end of a full swing. Thats a good top height. Usually around groin. Historically stone cutting sheds would have several sizes depending on piece size. Get off the ground and pound and stand up like a proper homo-erectus. If you can't lift it in your truck yourself..it's overbuilt..... or you should retire. Strength and Honor Matt Goddard- Stonemason Oregon Poetry in Stone www.poetryinstone.com

Just made one of these for my fireplace build. Mostly like this one except on the first layer of 2x4s I put a layer of 2x4s set vertical. Its super stout and has little give. We'll see about longevity but so far so good.
