It is amazing what a bit of hard work and determination can do on our farm in central Portugal. In order to get an idea of the lay of the land and to open up the spaces on our farm, we spent hours strimming the land, cutting down weeds and brambles and removing old sheep fencing. Some of the fencing had been nailed into trees and become embedded as the trees grew. This made the task even more difficult. Of course the weeds and brambles took advantage of these scenarios and added to the problem. After also clearing away a tangled mess of brambles and removing old structures attached to a rickety old sheep shed, we uncovered a real gem- a water source, in fact a centuries old water mine!
