Thanks for the info and guide, I obtained 8 new Bosch injectors same part as yours, from the States and fitted them to my 91k M3 E92 yesterday - didn't have any previous problems with the injectors but now happy new one's are in. As an aside, I have to say the car really runs better now in general and feels cleaner in the way it revs and idles....so clearly the old injectors (although working ok) were worn or past their best, as you'd imagine at 91k anyway. I had previously used injector cleaner regularly and only quality 99 fuel, so the fuel system was in tip top condition. Given the reasonable cost of doing this job (my injectors cost about £280) I'd say this is a no brainer for anyone with a higher mileage M3 E92. It is a bit concerning that there is no fuel filter as a service part on this car which also strengthens the case for doing this preventative maintenance .... we must keep more E92 M3s on the road - that engine will need be repeated and is a true naturally aspirated masterpiece and these cars are starting to go up in value....no surprise perhaps. Thanks again for the video guide.

Glad to hear the video helped Brian 👍 I also noticed improvement in the running but more so in the idle than the upper RPM and yes for the cost it’s a no brainier to change them. Agree, we need to enjoy these naturally aspirated 8,600rpm times 😎

Great video - saved for when my new injectors arrive! With S65 parts getting more expensive and scarce, I figure it can’t hurt to replace them preventatively. I sadly missed the boat on ignition coils and now they’ve tripled in price.

Thanks. I'm a bit hesitant to replace them. On the other hand, I've had two cutouts already after going to 8k and upshifting without loss of traction and DSC light didn't flash, no DTC stored. It was not on the highway. What usually happens with the injectors failing AFAIK is that you get detonation which destroys a piston at the outer edge or burns a hole into the middle.
@stoneautomotive
@stoneautomotive 3 жыл бұрын
The DME in the e92 M3 is very advanced with ignition timing, if detonation is noticed it will drastically pull out ignition advance = low power (thankfully the days of carb engined vehicles are long gone with holes in pistons but incorrect mapping can obviously still cause it) I’ve not seen any injector failures on the S65 that cause piston damage from poor spray pattern etc just sticking fully open and causing big failure as a result of hydro locking the engine with fuel ☹️ I hope in time some one will be able to work out the fault, my Clio 172 Cup is on 134,000 miles with original injectors and my Honda S2000 on 147,000 miles on original injectors with no issues where’s the M3’s have been failing as low as 30,000 miles

Just finished this job today, thanks for the video! 474$ CAD for the new Bosch injectors and about 2 hours work. Worst part was getting the clips off the old injectors lol I noticed the same changes as you, very slight roughness at idle, but not enough to register a fault code, gone after changing.

I bought some secondhand oem bmw injectors in working condition I was told which they did flow within 4/5% of each other but there was two injectors that was leaking so I had them all ultrasonic cleaned 4 times and flow tested two times till each one was good. This goes to show you how much crap goes through the fuel lines and into each injector. I’ll be fitting a fuel filter from areeve
@stoneautomotive
@stoneautomotive 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the e92 M3 is going to be just like the M5 with injectors almost becoming a serviceable item. Certainly be interested to see where the new filter will be fitted - keep the thread updated I’ve linked in the description 👍 Ps - would it not have been cheaper to have just purchased new units rather than a second hand set and ultra sonic cleaned/ flow tested?

@@stoneautomotive UK mate, for the 2 years I’ve had it always used either Shell V-Power or Tesco Momentum, more Tesco tho and still use the same fuel now as I don’t think it’s related. I think the S65 injectors are starting to go due to age/higher mileage, I think the S85 was more common because they were produced 2005etc they had higher mileage and age, but now the S65 is catching up thus the injector problem. I’ve heard people say replace them every 50k miles and you shouldn’t have to worry.

Interesting video, I recall finding a few cases of injectors killing engines in the M3post forum (the 'blown motors' thread, I did a clean up of the list later on btw), I wondered about replacing them myself on my own M3, and a few of us discussed whether we were going to replace them or not. I decided not to (so far, lol) as it was so rare (3-4 at the time IIRC). The current count in the aforementioned thread is 6 engines killed by injector failures, but I haven't gone through your m3cutters thread yet to see if their are any new cases (new to m3post, but probably are. Oh, JFYI, I use the same name in m3cutters and m3post as I do here). You mentioned a FB M3 group in your forum thread, is the it the UK M3 group? (I'm already a member of that). Also, is there a 'thread' there tracking how many S65s have been damaged by injector failures? Btw I don't buy the idea that dirt gets past the fuel filter and knackers the injectors, most petrol cars now (and for many, many years) have had in tank fuel filters, injector failure of this kind is not rife. Also, the whole point of the filter is to stop the dirt getting through! Like you, I think it's down to some kind of internal wear (or failure) in the injector.......hey, at least we agree on that! 😉, even if we don't on the fast cold idle thing! 😂
@stoneautomotive
@stoneautomotive Жыл бұрын
I’ve seen the page on M3post (I was linked to it by a subscriber) nicely organised but I feel that forum is home to more users in the States than UK to gauge how many failures have occurred (I think many are also not proud to declare the failure as a replacement engine doesn’t do wonders for vehicle resale so often kept hush hush) Yep the Facebook page for the e9x M3 group is the one I was referring too, I’ve seen a few cases on there but sadly it doesn’t sit in one post you would have to go through various pages to group them all together. I had a chap on M3cutters post advise that he believed it was just more specialists making money than a real issue, he messaged me advising he then suffered injector failure destroying the engine and wished for the small cost for a set of 8 that he had changed them.. Glad we agree on something 😅 the filter solution just doesn’t make sense at all as you wouldn’t have just one injector fail it would be multiple units if something had contaminated the fuel system. PS for the cost, get them change, some chap on KZbin called Stone Automotive made a guide 👀😅

This rare issue is clearly due to the high revving nature of the engine and would be proportional to how much use is spent at redline. It's next to impossible to drive on public roads in those conditions over long stretches and would only be a thing in track days. So i don't see this as an issue for 95% of E9x M3 owners who will only redline on specific sporadic occasions, not on every straight stretch of the road. There's paranoia around this engine which is overblown which i think Bmw did a poor job to dispell as they never quelled the infamous RB MB issue with their manufacturer point of view info to reassure owners. Because of this there's a tendancy to worry too much about this engine and do fearmongering preventive replacement that is not needed. There's actually people from this community who saw the opportunity for a quick buck business and are using psychology to sell their miracle fix part which makes no difference. I go back to 2008-2013 i know this engine history already at the time. As a long time owner of this car (i factory ordered mine and took delivery directly in Munich), my rating is that it was designed like a superstar with huge ambition from the true M division engineers (a thing of the past) and then ( due to the 2008 financial crisis) saw Bmw downsizing M division and merging it with the regular 3 series and ignoring reliability issues of owners. Unlike Porsche i think Bmw has a poor support and follow up from the manufacturer on their performance cars. Instead of helping everybody they tend to only help does who sue them or threaten to. They tend to turn the page and focus on the next generation model and completely abandon current owners. Overall i like the car but not the bmw brand and corporation. I like Japanese brands much better as they design with customer ownership in mind, making sure nothing will disappoint for years after the buy and if something does they will not sweep it under the rug like bmw does.

Well said 👍 agree the forums don’t help as you always hear of the bad things before the good but at the same time I’ve seen and know people with rod bearing and injector failure on road cars so it was enough to convince me to get them changed 😅 Also agree with the BMW after care comment, really not great and cars are certainly not built like they used to be from them in terms of reliability ☹️
