I'm a blue, white, and yellow person. When I purchased my home 13 years ago I made a beautiful quilt with green fabric to use in my bedroom. I wanted to break the blue cycle. I painted my bedroom walls and decorated around the colors on the quilt. It was a beautiful room. But, four years later, I was done. Back to blues. I love neutral walls and blue accents. It's my color, it what's makes me happy and comfortable and I'm sticking to it! Love your videos!!!❤❤❤

One tip I would give once you have narrowed down your choices is to get a sample can of paint and some poster board. Paint a LARGE swatch of color leaving a bit of white around the edges so the current wall color doesn’t impact how the color “reads” then tack the swatch(es) up around the room where you plan to use it. I always write the brand/color/sheen on the top of the poster board especially if I’m trying multiples. The thing I’ve learned most from doing this is that the colors I like in the store on small samples are nearly always too saturated and vivid for the look I’m going for and I have to go back with that colors small sample and look for lighter more grayed tones even though I don’t want the paint to read muted and grayed on the wall. It’s just a fact once you’ve covered a large area with the color that the color will have a more saturated vivid look. Hope that helps your viewers.
@StoneCottageHome Жыл бұрын
Hello, Miss Trina! Fabulous tips! Color is tremendous fun ~ and can be terribly tricky... Painting large swatches will definitely give you a better idea of how that color will look as the light changes in that space throughout the day. I'm with you on steering away from the more saturated colors, and avoiding colors in the middle of the card. As color goes on the wall, the concentration of color will naturally cause it to be more saturated. Which means it is usually a good idea to step down the intensity when choosing colors. Thanks so much for sharing from your experience and for visiting today!

I’m embarrassed to say this but I went through 13 gallons of paint to get the right buttercup yellow for my ‘main’ color in my house and looking back I wish I would have just asked someone like calico corners fabric store what color they had on their walls and approached it that way.

Thank you, Rachel, for featuring my favorite color - BLUE! My kitchens have been blue and white for the last 30+ years (white cabinets, blue walls, Delft blue accents). Currently, my bedroom is blue (Scandanavian blue), and two bathrooms are blue/white. Did I mention that blue is my favorite color? Even the shutters and doors on my light gray house are blue. I wear mostly blue clothes...and my eyes and the eyes of my husband and two sons are, you guessed it - blue (of varying shades). Thanks for explaining the various shades and the colors that are added to make them warm or cool. I look forward to every new video that you produce and find you to be such a lovely person. Blessings to you and Matt!

I've never used blue or sage in decorating my home, but this was extremely interesting and informative. I used a light shade of turquoise for years and just recently we painted over all of it. We have very cold Winters here in Manitoba and I felt cold every time I looked at the walls. They are now a warm off white and a warm darker beige. I use pink and red with it in pillows and rugs.

I’d enjoy seeing what’s done with oranges or yellows. Blue is one of our favorite colors. Back in the early 90’s we styled with country blues. Then in the first decade of 2000 we used dark denim blue and orange in our master bedroom. Currently we’re using peacock blue with chocolate brown in our bedroom. Thank you for the help.

Great ideas, Terri! I love the warm tones and they are often used in cottage styles as they are cozy. As you've discovered, blue and orange work well together ~ this is because they are directly opposite each other on the color wheel! Recently, I've been playing with a muted blue and faded red color scheme for our study, and I'm loving the inspo pictures I'm finding! We are also using blue and brown in our living room makeover... Such an excellent video Miss Rachel. Years ago I took a class in design, we were asked to gather decorating magazines and instinctively find pictures that we liked and tear them out. Once we had a number of them we were to then review them for color, design elements, texture, etcetera. By doing this we could start determining the things we liked and were drawn to for our own homes or helping others; this could be done in Pinterest also, like you mentioned in your video. Thank you for bringing such helpful information to us.

Thank you for yet again such a wonderful video, Mrs. Rachel! I do have a "color video" request: I have always loved the tone of red called "Ashes of Roses," but other tones intrigue me also. My sister painted one of her bathrooms what I'd call "Ashes of Lilac" and it's absolutely stunning! In the Fall, I look forward to setting out items that are ash yellow. So although you've already mentioned tones in some of your videos, I'd love to see a video specifically dedicated to these romantic, nostalgic toned-down colors that were so very popular in the Victorian era, as they look fantastic in a cottage-style home.
