Probably the best ban/unban announcement ever. What people don't get about modern is unlike standard its way easier for decks to have main board answers to the equipment itself.

A lot of red (the single most prolific colour in modern IRCC) deck either run or can easily slot in abrade anyway. Green and white has multiple answers both in spell and creature form, UB doesn't really, but there's no UB decks that care too much anyway.

Ferocidon is the only card UNBANNED in Standard, but two cards were UNRESTRICTED in Standard, and at least one card was banned, rotated, and then came back and wasn't banned. That counts for something right? EDIT: And a Looting ban literally would not have even touched Hogaak, half the builds weren't even using it and they were arguably more consistent.

Re: Buried Alive - I'd be okay with this running through standard and modern. But I think it needs to come with a complete reworking of how the colors handle the graveyard. Artifact - Reprint Relic in the core set at (C). B & W: I'd like to see a B 1CMC charm that exiles the entire graveyard, with at least 1 other moderately maindeckable mode. I'd like to see more Vile Rebirth-like effects in B and W, with tokens or life being the reward. But mainly I'd like to see a few Withered Wretch-style mana sinks. I don't think they need to be Scavenging Ooze/payoffs, but some payoff couldn't hurt. G: I'd like to see this focus on recycling cards by putting them on the bottom of your library. You run them to restack your library, but at instant speed you can get rid of your opponent's graveyard stuff by putting it on the bottom of their library. U: While G should restock individual targets, I get the impression U should shuffle the graveyard into the library. Maybe as a mode on a 1CMC charm; maybe as a 2 mana cantrip, maybe as the ETB ability on some wizards or whatever. R: Magma Spray-effects won't stop Buried Alive, but they'll stop Gravecrawler from coming back. While I don't think any one of these should be a set theme (though each could get their turn if you wanted); I do think having a core set with 2-3 pieces of (C) or (U) "exile entire graveyard" hate, and 3-5 pieces of spot graveyard hate, would be pretty cool. Quite frankly, I want Reanimator to be a thing; graveyard hate checks that, so no need to make Zombify cost 5 mana or the like.

Another thing I totally forgot - back in the day when Cawblade of every variant was warping Standard, we wanted to see how viable it was against some Legacy decks (granted, certain decks/cards didn't even exist yet like Miracles/Delver/Snapcaster Mage/etc.) and it held up shockingly well. I'd be surprised if it was anywhere near as strong now, but it was certainly too strong back when it came out. Granted Cawblade existed in a time when fetch lands, man lands (including Inkmoth Nexus), some strong counterspells, BoP, Bolt, etc. were in standard, it still held managed to make it a competition against some good old school Legacy decks.

The thing about tron is that since graveyard deck are weakened and rips wont be as needed, some anti tron can be put in, dampening spheres will hopefully see more sideplay

If we see phoenix survive, it's probably gonna be more as a mid-rangey style deck. Cathartic reunion can somewhat replace looting, and mana confluence + thing in the ice will still be strong cards to have in a deck. It's probably not gonna be as much of a fast aggro than a value-centered UR spellslinger deck.

I think the scariest place Stoneforge could end up is in Whirza shells. It's another way to search up Sword of the Meek and give you the Batterskull/other Swords package as another way to grind out games. Might be fine, but it could be a case where the new top dog gets a whole lot better. It's going to be an exciting format, however; I'm looking forward to what happens!

RIP SFM Meme At the time of SFM's banning it was oppressive. The meta at the time was way more "fair" and it just insta-won games by grinding out value. That said, it's a way different environment now and it's probably going to go the way that Jace's and BBE's unbannings went, hyped and overplayed at the start to then balance out to be played but not op. Lastly, if SFM doesn't warp the format, which I don't think it will, don't let yourself think Splinter Twin will be ok in modern. Keep that shit banned.

Anyway, I never played ST, but I did play against it in modern (this one I'm sure of) My local meta game was heavy on BR tempo and jeskai control decks for a time. The consistency of the decks being able to always win by turn 4/5 back then was extremely oppressive. But... I guess in the current landscape turn 4 wins aren't completely insane. And I guess that was compounded by the fact that at the time I was only playing "fair" decks like zoo, soul sisters and affinity. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad, I kinda want to see how modern shakes out after this though. If they could ever get the format to a place where there are legitimately 6+ tier 1 decks instead of 1-3 dominiating the meta game I think that'd make everyone happy. Sidenote, you mentioned Tron as being the king now, but how do you think Storm (either gifts or twiddle) will fare now? Seems like it's in a good positiion too now, but I could be missing something. I have to admit I've been playing mostly arena for the past while so I've been a bit out of the modern loop for a bit. Anyway thanks for the response, keep up the great content! @@hydrainfernos9081 The ban list should be for cards that have proven that they tilt win rates towards specific strategies upwards of 70%+. On top of also having no realistic methods of counterplay. The ban list shouldn't be for cards that "i don't personally like". Twin didn't break the turn 4 format rule and wasn't doing anything more broken than a LOT of other modern decks. The ban list should have an aggressive review done every year to determine if a card needs to stay on the list because there are almost no good answers to a card that is on the list currently, otherwise, said cards should be unbanned. I didn't play Twin but i'd argue that it kept a lot of decks honest. It's one of the ideal "fuck around and find out" kind of decks.

It's pretty obvious they unbanned SFM this round because they figured there would be near riots over the Looting ban. The best way to offset that anger is to give players something they've wanted for some time. And it's been REALLY effective: we're talking WAY more about what SFM will do than what Looting's absence will do. And really, that's absurd because Looting was in so many decks at the top so it's removal is almost a format reboot, but here we are, talking about what to do with SFM instead of what former-Looting decks can move forward and how they might adapt.

Buried Alive would be stupid, yes. Personally I think we keep going and slow down the format. Ban Ancient Stirrings, Mox Opal, Griselbrand, Manamorphose, and maybe something from Infect and Bogles. Anything fast and uninteractive, fuck it. Tron especially feels way too consistent with the London Mulligan, Expedition Map, AND Ancient Stirrings to get Turn 3 Karn. Also fuck Great Creator, ban Mycosinth Lattice. A 1-card lock-your-opponent-out-of-the-game combo that can be played in any color is oppressive, restrictive, and BS.

Making it 1-and-1 may allow for slower games on the unfair decks while allowing fair decks their card selection. Also just ban ancient stirrings since tron keeps making turn 3 a nightmare

If a card would be printed as “Discard 1 then draw 1” decks like dredge could still get a little to much advantage from it, since you discard a dredge card then you dredge it instead of drawing. You either have to draw first or make it cost a little more (like life or filling up certain requirements to cast the card). While tron is a strong deck, banning Ancient Stirrings is not the way to stop the deck. It'll just adapt with a card like Oath of Nissa (a card that can essentially get anything stirrings would in the deck). Sure, it might be a little less consistent but with every other tools it as right now (expedition map, sylvan scrying, chromatic star and sphere), I don't think banning Stirrings would kill the deck

What makes dredge strong is how fast it can fill and use it's graveyard, and doing it on turn two instead of one makes it much easier for the opponent to disrupt the gameplan of the dredge deck.

I've had Arbiter out of my list for over a year now, and I am still winning FNMs against plenty of decks. (Take into consideration, this is BW Eldrazi and Taxes) It literally allowed me so many flex slots that make the deck hose metagame strategies that we otherwise are pretty medium to poor against. Also, Ghost Quarters and Fields already make tron a favorable matchup, and a 2-of mindcensor is still fine. I got Kambals, Remorseful Cleric, Militia Bugler, and plenty of other things. Also now, for the better reason of Arbiter not playing well with Stoneforge, I'll keep him out anyhow because I feel like it is way too gimmicky, and isn't really warranted with so many of the top decks not really caring about him as much.

I had written an entire rant about how Buried Alive would be too good, and then I realized that I was talking about Entomb, and Buried Alive on turn 3 (or turn 2 with ramp) would be just fine. I can't imagine Phoenix being dead from this. It's still the new version of Storm, just like how Classic Affinity decks got outcompeted by the modern version without any Affinity Cards in them. Phoenix will get more Reliant on Cathartic Reunion and whatever looting effects they can pull from the woodwork, but it's still going to be a real deck.

If they DID print Buried Alive again I wonder if instead of/in addition to Phoenix people would dust off their old Demigod of Revenge(s) and/or Vengevine(s) and make some crazy Rakdos/Grixis/Jund reanimator combo midrange deck. That is some spicy jank I want to see!

I think buried alive would actually be fine in modern. It's exactly the right power level. Putting 3 phoenix's in the bin is really really good and dredge would have a field day putting in bloodghasts and prized amalghams or even just being an effective way of getting a necessary golgari thug or life from the loam in the yard, but the fact that it won't be able to do these things until turn 3 makes buried alive a great way of simply bringing dredge and phoenix back into relevance after the hit of losing looting. The real worry of course is the possibility of a goryo's vengeance deck being good, but at best it's inconsistently reanimating an emrakul on turn 4 and with force of negation being a thing in modern now I don't see that deck being playable even with buried alive.

The creatures you play with Stoneforge in a U/W deck would/should include a lot of manlands. That's part of what made it so effective in standard, and it could likely be effective in Modern.
