The real reason Stoneforge Mystic is banned is because it makes Seth’s Turn 2 Colossal Hammer deck too consistent. WotC just can’t allow it to be Hammer Time all the time.

Ah yes, if you have three specific uninterrupted cards as well as a T1 creature that is uninterrupted (and a fourth card in your deck) you can start hitting them with a big creature on turn 3. Congrats, you’re a turn slower than the Modern format.

modern has gotten to a point where cards like ensaring bridge a 3 cost artifact may not save you the game if you don't have it in your opening hand. That's kinda ridiculous. So to say that Colossus hammer and Stone forge mystic is broken isn't really a fair claim because modern has already gotten to the point where, if you can't protect yourself by turn 3 your going to get steam rolled on turns 4-5. Unbanning stoneforge and having Colossus hammer in hand won't change anything because you'd potentially kill someone on turn 4-5 anyway. Turn 2 SFM, turn 3 hammer, 4-5 swing. It won't change anything, I think it'd balance thing out if not it adds diversity to the format.

Flusterstorm exists so blue doesn't die to Grapeshot or Empty the Warrens, the new Weather the Storm is... life gain, for pretty much the same reasons as Flusterstorm (and a response to Tendrils in legacy), and I guess you could argue the Wing Shards reprint into modern, which is basically just Settle the Wreckage if you manage to cast it against an Empty the Warrens play after the give the gobbos haste. So yeah, they're technically printing some new storm cards into modern, but they're not printing any new storm cards that actually make you _win._

SFM is 100% safe for modern. I think they don’t want to make UW control too good, but they keep printing cards that only help control; Narset, Teferi, Teferi. Instead they could print cards that helped out several archetypes including control.

The real reason Stone Forge Mystic is banned in modern is because Stone Forge Mystic was banned in standard along with Jace the Mind Sculptor and the Cw Blade deck. At the time modern wasn't a format. It was extended. When modern was created everything currently banned in standard was carried over into modern. Stoneforge Mystic was banned for Jace the Mind Sculptor sins.

Sigarda's Aid + Stoneforge Mystic + Recurring bounce is the engine that powers my Sram deck, to be fair (despite working against his ability, he's useful when the engine ks disrupted). Other people have already said it, but Wolfrider Saddle as it's printed doesn't make sense when you think about it. Is the wolf token riding itself? For me, I would have made it without the current "Can't be blocked by more than one creature" bonus and had it so that the wolf token gets created with Soulbond Flanking or something, and also has "When this token leaves the battlefield, return Wolfrider saddle to its owner's hand" and that would make the card playable-ish as well as making more sense.

There is so much change in magic with every new set every ban wizards introduces, in modern at least, should all be banned with time expiration on it. At the time the expiration ends it gets unbanned and if, still broken, would get banned again for another duration of time awaiting reintroduction in the future when sufficient change has occurred within the card base. Blanket bans make no sense in magic because cards are banned in response to point in time issues with the card but with no guarantee that the future state of the card remains unbalanced. Would bridge have needed to be banned if deathrite shaman was legal? Would deathrite need to be banned if jitte and stoneforge were all legal too? We'll never know within the current ban design.

It kind of hurts that WoTC had to make things like Hogaak and friends. I mean, things like those just cause a lot more stress on sideboards (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) which has a lot of potential for non-games and it just kind of forces bans to happen, which sucks to those who invested into it, or allow it to be legal, which (arguably) worsens the format. I run captains hook in my zedruu arms dealer commander deck! The deck runs a ton of cheap equipment that have awkward equip/unequip costs like the hook, demonmail hauberk and grafted wargear. Zedruu then donates them about to my opponents to give them boosts in combat while pillowforting up so that i dont get cracked by my own garbage equipments that arent worth wasting removal on (so lots of cards from zedruu). You use cards like fumble and magnetic theft to quickly move equipments around mid combat in case someone betrays you and then when the time is right you drop a board wipe followed by something like an armoury automaton and one shot someone because you snuck out a blackblade reforged or a grafted exoskeleton at some point and everyone was too busy shitting themselves over the thing it got attached to to notice whats happening. Decks sick, and captains hook is an mvp. Card's gas.

You make a very good argument here. WOTC have always been confused about how to balance the cast cost/equip cost of equipment, but lately they've been going the direction of low cast, high equip. In the current meta, Stoneforge wouldn't cause any problems because they haven't released a high cost, low equip card in ages. Hell, the only Stoneforge Mystic combo that could actually go off on turn 3 is probably something stupid like Grafted Wargear on a Kor Duelist swinging for 8. Turn 4 is far too late in Modern. I want to see Stoneforge Mystic back so it can make my budget Modern Junktroller/Sunforger/Swift Silence control deck a little closer to Modern viable lol.

I actually play the hook in my IRL Balan deck for commander. It's not the best, but it's fairly efficient since it gets thrown on him alongside shit like Angelic Armaments and Haunted Cloak and that 10/10 hammer from M20 all for the low low cost of 2 mana. I only do artifacts and interaction until I get to 6 Mana when I play so it's all done in one turn with little chance of a blowout.

Personal Opinion: If you want to "fix" modern and flip the format on it's head ban faithless looting, ancient stirrings, mox opal, and manamorphose. These cards alone have been the primary enabler to degenerate things in the format. You could also argue something from the neoform deck, but the variance on how well the deck performs is pretty crazy and would probably need to see how things settle before it warrants any actions. To fix pauper, ban weather the storm. This is the primary card that allows decks like Tron, Jeskai, and Boros to be so dominate on the charts. If you are going to allow the bounce value of cantrip manafixing rocks, then you need to hit the primary abusers of this kind of play. Storm as a mechanic has been broken in pauper for quite some time as it has zero counterplay in the format, cards with the mechanic should probably never be included within the format regardless of the text on the card. As for standard... I don't think there is a real way to "fix" standard as it is the nature of the format. It seems as soon as the third wedge/color splash is added to the format we hit the scenario of good stuff.dek and mono x aggro leading the format to a place of stagnation. It also shoots the barrier of entry through the roof as most standard decks are bordering tier 2 modern deck territory, and even with modern being in hogaak-land it is arguably a more popular and far more diverse format.

Whatever happened to the old argument that stoneforge mystic created too consistent and boring play patterns for viewers? Mulligan for Mystic > Play Mystic > Tutor up Equipment > Cheat the casting cost. In the original banning article for Jace & Mystic, Aaron Forsythe talks about how the overall power level of the card is something they find appealing instead of restricting. The tutor is the dangerous part. Finding the right answer is more destructive than simply putting a card into play at a better rate and with nothing more exciting to play than the Swords and Batterskull, it's easy to make a hypothetical case for the card's unbanning. There has, as of yet, not been a significant effort put into making powerful equipment with the looming threat of Mystic removed. Besides, they can just unban the card anyway. They don't test for modern.

I'm almost certain Stoneforge Mystic is a nonbo in UW Control. The opportunity cost of drawing an equipment instead of an answer in the early game would stretch the margins of success. But I could be wrong. Outside of control, when I think about this card without Umezawa's Jitte it doesn't feel too strong for Modern. I don't even think it would homogenize decks. Maybe W midrange decks, but those decks don't really exist right now anyways.

13:19 Funnily enough, the first time delve occurred, German cards translated it as "Ausgraben" - which had however already been used for dredge, i.e. another very broken mechanic. So they changed it to "Wühlen" in Tarkir Block. But yeah - I can see how one can get two broken graveyard mechanics confused... 😁

I play Captain’s Hook because it slots in nicely in the equipment curve for my Kembah EDH deck. The one equip cost in particular makes it useful. It’s not amazing by a longshot, and hopefully one day it’ll be replaced by a good card.

Everything you said is True. Faithless Looting is doing the exact Thing with graveyards that Birthing Pod is doing with Creatures. But i guess that Wizards does Not want to Shake Up the Format unless it becomes too stale.
