I think Veterans have earned the support, but, and i"ll likely get flamed for this, don't think it's the government's responsibility to care for the elderly. Even the concept of "retirement" is novel in history. It is just more erosion of nuclear and extended family and strong communities. We should be planning and preparing for our later years, and be building and supporting the local familiar, faith, community systems and respect for the elderly which makes this possible. However to return to this type of society, will take generations and much wailing and knashing of teeth I fear. Much like when I hear people praying "that our country will return to God" (if we truly were ever there to begin with, which is arguable), I want to and have on occasion reminded them of the old testament, when the people of God strayed. They did return, but usually only after a generation or more of slavery and hardship in foreign lands. Be careful what we pray for, we might get it, but not in the way we thought.

I bought some property in a rural area. I didn't build on it for about five years. I got to know the neighbors. One neighbor had farm animals, was retired, elderly and had medical issues. My other neighbor was a contractor. We live on acreage. I built just before covid hit. Prices were still low, and interest was rock bottom. After a year of living in our new house, both neighbors told me their mortgages went up a lot. I had no clue that building a nice house next to someone whose house is over 50 years old, would change their assessment. Not even two years went by and the older neighbor told me he was losing his house. He said his taxes and insurance had went up so much he couldn't make the payment anymore. He had paid 80% of his retirement home off. They literally raised their food, had a garden and worked the property every day. Then suddenly they quit doing anything. They went into foreclosure and started packing. I felt so bad knowing that my house/shop made his house more valuable and therfore caused his insurance and taxes to go up. It wasn't just my property that caused it, but was a contributing factor. They lost their home. Luckily I had a realtor friend who I had known for many years. He came in, got his house out of foreclosure, but couldn't get a refinance done. He put the house on the market, got it sold, and actually got my neighbor some cash to help build another house to live on his sons property. The new neighbor seems to be a good younger guy about half my age. Old neighbor was twice my age. The point being, my old neighbor lost his home only because values went up and so taxes/insurance followed. His dream got taken away. The American dream. What have we come to allowing taxes and insurance to take someone's house from them? It just isn't right. When you buy something, no one should be able to take it, especially the government. They are supposed to be protecting us, not taking the dream.

I can attest to how "power" has greedy intentions with electrical utilities. The push for solar for example is very difficult to accept as a tax reduction. If its reported the gov will find another way to tax you for being off grid. They do so by keeping a list and data on offgrid homesteads to jusify writing laws find ways to force people to have county inspections on diy or installed power plants on homesteads. As a 76 YO I’ve paid 4X what I bought my property for in 1978 for 38,900. The most recent reappraisal they wanted to re-appraise to $325,000 and this was after the property being flooded twice in 11 years. I fought it and they put the property tax back to what was the previous year at 168. Thanks for nothing. The state just passed a law that’s gonna increase fuel prices for the Green new deal by double in the next five years. The real problem is none of that money is to go to the general fund. It’s to go to funding new government departments with more employees to administer this money for home upgrades for energy efficiency. The money is going to simply disappear. It’s nothing more than a good jobs for good friends Policy. In my state, Vermont, the state is already the largest employer. They have more employees than the next five commercial businesses in the state combined. State and federal governments need to be cut by half.

We do NOT own our property. Look at your mortgage/Deed, it says you are a TENANT. Many, many decades ago, it used to say "OWNER". Not anymore. So you nailed it - we are paying the Govt rent to live there.

That said look at your amortization schedule…at the end of your loan time how much do you actually pay for your house, interest and all…….its usually about 2 1/2 times the asking price of the house……..so, for example, if you buy a $200,000 house in the end you’ll be paying at least $450,000 for that house!

Last year we built a 30x40 shop so i could work on antique furniture to make a little $. In two years my taxes and insurance went up so much we had to sell the property and move. I now have no shop and a one car garage instead of a three car garage with no way to setup a shop. Guess I’ll be selling to tools and equipment that i have purchased over the past 40 years and sit on the porch counting cars as they go by. This is what our government has reduced us to. Greg those the had enough success to reach home ownership obviously usually had a LOT of struggles too. Some may have just worked harder too. I know I myself worked since I was just eight years old started out sweeping floors and sanding cars in local auto body shops just like my brothers.. 59 now and most my life I worked 60 , 80, 90 hours a week at 1 to 3 jobs and hustled work for around the neighborhood with any free time. All while being a single father part of it raising 3 boys. So I had court dealing too that didn't always seem fair. You need to chase it if you really want it you can get it with sacrifice and a LOT of hard work for years. That's the whole point of the grip about being so highly taxed after working so hard to achieve home ownership. We thank you for your service but the rest of your commitments were a groundless excuse for your failures to try harder. When you stop playing victim you'll stop being one and move forward in life.

Last year at property tax time , my wife ans i had a perfect financial storm, i needed emergency surgery on my intestines or die, we needed a furnace replacement so while i was in the hospital with everything that was going on we had forgotten that we needed to get our 1st half of our property tax in, had my wife make sure and run it in 1 day after the first half was due. A while later she came up to the hospital in tears, literally crying her eyes out, i asked what was the matter she said now that the taxes were delinquent by a day they would no longer allow them to be paid in 2 equal parts, they were now due in full plus penalties and late fees. There was no getting around it, pay or they start the process. Had no option but to go borrow the money and pay in full. Then people wonder why folks hate the government!!!!!

I had a problem last time also, a bank mistake kept the auto-deduction from processing, so I called the County the next day and asked where and when I could pay it in person. They told me I had to call back in a week before they could do anything, but that would have been past the late date with $160 penalty. They said sorry, that's how we do it. I went in same day and demanded to pay them immediately, finally got them to let me. 😕

I live in Indiana, I have 14 acres, a nice home, and three fairly small pole barns. My property value went up over $200,000 last year. I pay over $14,000 property tax for 2024. I had my property assessed by a property assessment company and fought the County to get it reduced three years ago. Last year they put it right back up. Saw a little documentary on the situation in Bozeman MT where fully employed people who grew up there are living out of campers and mobile homes parked along the road while the wealthy newcomers keep driving both property prices and rents sky-high. The biggest mistake most people make is not putting back every month just for this reason and when it hit's, they have to scramble to make ends meet until it's paid. I'm in rural Virginia, too. I bought parts of my grandparent's farms. In 1939, Grandaddy paid $1200 for 118 acres. It's assessed at 260k now. 1954, 186 acres was $950. 1956, 165 acres was $900. Taxes today are over $10k. So the taxes on the land are nearly 5 times the cost of the land. The only way to keep the land is to start cutting some of the 3.5 million feet of timber.

@ I understand what you are saying. The govt attached all of those things to our property so that we can be strong-armed into paying the taxes. But, people need to actually look at their bill and see where that money is going, so that they know to either vote no on things they don’t want, vote no on increases that they don’t want, and also to go to the board meetings in their Township, county, schools etc and be fully informed of how well they are using that money in the areas they were voted to use the money on, by the local voters. Most people don’t understand that it’s not just “property tax”. It’s actually many things within “property taxes”. I think one of the biggest jams is that the government does things too cause our property to increase in value faster than what it would, so that our taxes go up. I'll be 70yrs old in two months. I bought my house and 1.5 acres 42 years ago. The interest was 15.5%. Over the years, I refinanced 4 times to get down to 2.5%. Everything is paid for free and clear. No credit cards. About a year ago I went to see about trading my 2005 pickup in on a newer one. My credit report was ZERO. I didn't know there was such a thing after all I've been through. I didn't get a new pickup. I lost my wife in 2019 and I had to quit my working in 2010 due to 2 different stage 3 cancers in '04 and '08. I have to put back money all year just to pay my taxes and insurance. Food prices are higher than a cat's back. My quality of life has really taken a nose dive. We need to have no property tax after retirement. I don't know what we're going to do. Tell your new friend to hang in there.

My wife and I have been retired for 12 years now. I will be 73 in May. Together we paid into SS over 80 years plus Fed and state taxes. We live in central South Carolina. When we retired at age 62 we got a homestead exemption on our county taxes. About $200 off the top. We only have a subdivision house and the property tax on the house not that much compared to many others. About $800. This year as we voted against another bond issue for the schools, we lost. Our tax notice came about a week after voting day. The school bond was exactly $200 added to our property. Now we own two trucks, one car and one HD trike. The Richland county property taxes on those 4 vehicles this year is just over $1,400 plus the house of $800. The damn insurance on all of them is $400 each month. Our medical insurance is just under $500 each month. So all I can say to you young people that are still working, you better plan for retirement or you will go under. My wife and I have good retirement and that keep us from too much worry. Now if we can get the health issues fixed. lol Damn joints are gone. By the way. My wife was a nurse for 40 years and I worked construction. We are not rich but we don't have to penny pinch. Thank God for that.

@@HarrisonCountyStudio it's going to vary a lot by region, but out here in AZ our public elementary, middle, and high schools are underfunded state-wide. Teachers with 40 years of experience are salary capped at something crazy low like 55k/year working in crap facilities, with less experienced teachers barely able to make ends meet. This is happening in large part because our older community members don't want to pay taxes and bonds that would fund a system they're not currently making active use of, even tho many have already received the benefits of a publicly funded education themselves that was funded by their own parents paying their taxes and bonds. I teach at the college level and have students sometimes who read and write at a 6th grade level inside my classes, where it's way too late for me to be of any real use to them. That's not happening as a result of "nebulous government inefficiency", it's a result of experienced teachers not being able to afford to keep being teachers. The solution to inefficiency inside of a system isn't to strip all the money out of it until it fails, it's to keep enough money in the system to allow the smart, experienced people to stick around and make that system more efficient. Sometimes, you get what you pay for, and it's frustrating that when the word "tax" or "govt" is associated with that, people tend to have pretty short-sighted gut reactions. Not all taxes are bad, not all taxes are good, and this issue isn't as black and white as people would like it to be.

We live just over the mountains from you in East Tennessee. Everyone had their properties reassessed last year. On average everyone’s property value doubled. Some of our neighbors that have mobile homes and vacant lot’s went up almost 3X. I called and spoke to to the assessor office. They assured me the bill would not double that the taxes would go up a minimal amount. Our bill went up 36% . We were more fortunate than some of our neighbors. I don’t know how many will loose their homes this year. It’s really criminal for our seniors that are on a fixed income and can no longer work to generate extra income. Their house of 30yrs was paid for but she owed her property tax & they would not help her by giving her more time. Her property was auctioned off at the court house door. It was during the winter with temperatures in the single digits. She had 30 days to move. It was horrible. The only house their daughter ever knew. She was 12 when her dad died then 2 yrs later forced to move. She over the yrs has tried to kill herself many times. My sister & her have Never Recovered. Its been 15yrs now. This has so much wrong with it its unbelievable. Not sure what should be done. Nobody even understands unless it happens to them or someone they know. Its very sad.

Two months ago I had to loan a friend $15,000 so she could pay her taxes and insurance. This woman was my nurse when I was recovering from a major surgery and we have been friends ever since. She is from Columbia and was in a jam and I felt terrible for her because she had to ask me and I could feel the pain in her voice when she called me on the phone. Our property taxes just went up as well. We got the notice yesterday. 😢 Our house insurance went up $500. Our mtg went up $60 last year and now is going up this year another $100. Our water went up 6% with the notice it will be raised 2% every year here after. Our vehicle insurance went up. Our health insurance went up. I’m worried to death about how we will pay for the increase on everything. We are already at our limit.

When you REGISTER a vehicle you're giving CO-OWNERSHIP of said vehicle to the COUNTY/STATE in which you REGISTERED, and when you apply for a DRIVERS LICENSE you are giving CONSENT to have your Right to Travel converted into a PRIVILEGE to travel down the STATES POST ROADS via LICENSING.

I’m also in NC, my property taxes went up to almost 4k. We have elderly here who will lose their homes because of property taxes. It is wrong. Over 65 should not have to pay property tax as their incomes are fixed. They’re in the most vulnerable stage of their lives and should not worry about a roof over their head.

Here in Columbus Ga. where I live we have what's called Homestead Exemption H-1 which is when you buy or inherit your property the property tax is frozen at whatever it's assessed at the time. You then go to the Citizens Service Center and file Homestead Exemption and that takes care of any future increases. Our city and county consolidated in 1971 so there isn't two different taxes, city tax or county tax to pay depending on what area you live, it's all under one roof so to speak. I don't have several acres like a farm, but when I inherited the house I live in from my mom and dad in 2012 and became the owner the property tax rate was frozen at $1200 and hasn't gone up a penny since then. Voters here approved it in 1982 or '83. The city has tried unsuccessfully to repeal it through putting it up for a vote three or four times since then, but it's been rejected by the voters every time. ( No one in their right mind is gonna vote themselves a tax increase ) Just in case some of you may be wondering, my house is just over 1500sq. ft. and sits on 3/4 to 1/2 acre lot. The house is also paid for and I thank the Lord in heaven for it.

I was paid on the current year. But somehow not paid for a previous year. I checked that I was current. Then I got the notice my house was on the block. I went to the court house and learned a tax from two years ago was not paid. The local tax collector informed me that she can only tell me about current or open taxes. So, even though the local tax collector told me I was current, in the current year, she did not have to tell me I had past due from a previous year. Maybe the system is set up that twisted way. As a disabled senior citizen with two cancer surgeries this year, it is a miracle I caught the little square notice card from the courts. I am guessing many people do not even get that little card. The laws must change to place extreme diligence on the taxing issues to make owners aware and truly make these tax sales a case of last resort with integrity. Currently it is predatory S...t show.

First and foremost, let me say thank you for your service. Im a Air Force Veterans myself. I was a AGE mechanic. Secondly, wow, this was a wake up call to me. I never considered my property taxes after my home is paid for because its just rolled into my mortgage. Thank you for this video. I love my country but ive really been considering packing up my family and becoming an ex pat. How did we get here as a country? The boston Tea party was fought over a 2% or 2 cent tax. Dont judge, been out of history for a while. None the less, you get my point. Its sad that we value profits over humanity. I’m in South Dakota. We moved here two years ago and our property taxes at that time were $1600/yr. After one year they went up to almost $3000. If they keep going up like this we’re selling and will return to Nevada where property taxes are very reasonable. My neighbor, a widow, pays $5000/yr for her property taxes here in SD. Smh And if you own land and put a structure on it then the county thinks it’s their right to increase your taxes exponentially because YOU improved the property 😡

I have a small piece of property (5 acres wooded) in TN and the property tax went up 347%. I called the county assessor and they said property has went up in that area and my property hasn’t been assessed in 5 years. They did me a real favor by reducing it to only 265% above last year. I couldn’t imagine this increase on a fixed income.

So, i have two thoughts. One is if folks get pissed at the status quo, they need to get involved. We need to change those that run the government, and we as citizens can and should hold them accountable. Second, I think it is a crime at the lack of fiscal acumen of many of our older citizens. My Mom is 92 years old and would be lost if I did not help her with her Social Security and Medicare stuff. it is just very complicated. We need to either make it less complicated; or have advocates that can help our elderly folks navigate.

So much of this tax revenue is being eaten up by benefits such as retirement and healthcare that doesn't exist in the private sector. These types of benefits have been gone with the wind in the private sector for decades. Now states and federal government have future commitments that are IMPOSSIBLE to meet! No amount of money can meet these liabilities! I am 76. My Dad used to say these tinhorn politicians at all levels of government grab greedily for every nickel of revenue they can get. My county commissioner, a long time friend, told me that he has little money for roads after all the employee expenses are paid. I know many who work 10 years for the state just to get vested in the retirement plan and then retire. Many do this because their retirement funds from the real world are not enough. I do not blame them for this but the liability of the state is transferred to the citizens and we can't handle the increased burden. I recently retired in June at 75 and 2/3's. I knew I had to work closer to my demise! These burdens are IMPOSSIBLE! But governments at all levels continue to grow and strangle we the people.

The WORST thing is that delinquent taxes are penalized with fees and COMPOUNDED interest. If you don't pay your taxes and don't try to, that compounded interest escalates exponentially. It's disgusting. Even if you try to get on a payment plan it pays the oldest taxes first but the remainder of the taxes owed still occur compounded interest.

Me and my wife were done the same here on our house and property. The house was built in 1970 it and the property was 25000, they gave us ten days or they was auctioning of our home and property. In this small farming county in Tennessee. Sad.

Living nightmare, the tax office and a banker had my house on a lien, not aware cause any letters went to a PO BOX and not the house of the PROPERTY... They were gonna steal my house... My small farm here in Johnston County, NC, went up 180% in the county's property revaluation this year. Just got the notice this past Friday. The last evaluation was in 2019. The average increase for the county as a whole was 71%. There are some very upset people, including myself.

As a 100% unemployable veteran, I have 3 properties. 2 are in red counties and one (my old house that I rent out as a not for profit) in a Blue county I can tell you the rental that is worth half of my primary residence I had to pay $700 over what I paid in my primary residence this year. With that said, all 3 properties went up in assessment this year, even though none have been "improved." The bottom line is we own nothing, and 80% of Americans are ok with this because it funds emergency services and the teachers' unions. It's theft plain and simple. Bless your neighbor because when they die, they'll be a tax on that, too. This country/corporation is on a bad path.

I inherited my father's home after he passed. He just before he passed had a tax bill of $600 a year. Because he was given an exemption because he was legally blind and cripple. My first bill from the town I almost passed out as it was over $3,500. At the time I was working as a laborer getting $17 an hour. I was able to pay that bill because of savings. Every year that bill increased and never stopped the fallowing years to come. Every year I paid that bill with my savings because my income could not support it. Eventually I decided to sell it. My final tax bill was now over $4,500. It rose over $1,000 in 4 years of ownership and I did nothing to change the house or land. I recently looked up that houses tax bill. The people did do some work to it. But as far as I can see does not constitute that tax bill rising over $8,000 a year. I now live in a mobile home in a senior mobile home park. My share of the property tax here is $660 a year. I have zero wish to ever own a stick built home ever again.

He was old and the mobile was old but it was affordable. Then a year later everyone was given notice in Barrie Ontario Canada as they where building condos there. Ron got a few hundred dollars. Right now in " Sweet Water " a park of 900 residents is closing down as " BLACK WARER " the millionaires bought the park and will sell the land for billions. It will happen everywhere till every park is closed.

We are a non profit and self governed involving yearly election of our board of directors. Being a resident owned park our monthly fees are 1/3 of what for profit parks around me are paying. I pay $200 a month. That fee pays for my water, sewerage, roads plowed and sanded and my share of property tax. I receive a statement from the treasurer which I can claim on my taxes.

My elderly neighbor fell on bad times, on the third year of tax delinquency the county put their 1972 payed for manufactured home on auction. The county absorbed $40,000 above the tax that was owed on it. That is legalized theift! If I ever get to that point, I'll bull dose to the county road.
