well my friend....."forced to learn" at 72 is a total bummer....bigger question is this: If you had to do it over again, would ya pay someone to mow your lawn or learn how to do it and enjoy that hour of peace every week improving your property? There's a sense of pride that comes from mowing that I honestly can't explain.....looking back on a hard day's work and being proud of it. That's what our children need too!! My dad is 72....you're still a young woman!! Remember...always wear some boots and long pants and safety glasses! Take care!

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer well I know how to mow the lawn and do it sometimes, but the issue becomes allergies to grass and exhaustion after that hour, and I still have all the other things to do that my husband of 50 yrs did, plus my stuff ( garden, chickens, house, preserving food, chopping and stacking wood for heat for next year, - done! etc) I’m about to take the corroded pipes out from under my bathroom sink and figure out how to replace them. @@barbparshley5653Barb, I hear you loud and clear, I’m a young 54 single mom, had a bouncing baby boy at 43, he’s still small to help me with my mothers overgrown (poison ivy in places) She let it get out of control and now I have to learn to do all of the things. She’s lived here for 35 years and never liked to garden or be outside. She’s 87, that means the large family we had are no longer here. It’s just us 3 now. I get overwhelmed and have had to learn ALL kinds of things that I’d rather delegate but so be it. I’m a gardener so the yard and our space is very important to me so I’ll keep chipping away at it. I’m here because I ordered a lower cost 2 stroke weed/brush eater and had to assemble it. It came with 3 feet of string in the attachment 🙄😂 Don’t overexert yourself. One bite at a time. I wish I had chickens but I’d have to build a coop myself and I don’t care that much anymore 😂 I hope you are doing well! 🌱🪻🐥

Try soaking your weed eater string as well. In all the years I've worked with a weed eater, I've never heard about this and just learned this evening! Word is your older line gets some new life in it and you won't be loading near as much line with it not being as brittle. Good luck!

You missed a very important and useful feature of the spool: There are a couple of roundish notches on the rims of the spool to hold the ends of the line so you can install it without holding on to the ends. Also some spools allow you to just bend the 24 feet of string in two and not have to cut it in two.

Well done on the method. I work at a STIHL shop myself. Only suggestions to make it easier would be that if you just take 4 arm lengths and cut it. Put each end in the spool as you did and spool it till you're left with a short loop. Latch each edge in the notches built into the spool for holding your line while putting the spool into the head and cut the loop of line. Pull the line from the edge of the spool into the appropriate eyelet and they hold themselves there. Put your faceplate on and go. Otherwise this is super helpful and will recommend it for people who don't have time in the shop. My method would just save you the time of measuring two seperate pieces cause you can cut it at the very end, the spool is built and designed for that. The notches on the top edge of the spool opposite each other. And the effort of holding the line once it's been spooled, hooking it into the notch on the top of the spool removes that risk/effort of holding it from unwinding completely.

Tip: If you notice more line breakage than what you feel is normal, drop your roll of unused line in a bucket of water for a day or two. Old line can become brittle and a good soaking can reverse this from happening. This is equally true with a new roll of line as there is no way of knowing how many seasons it was on the shelf prior to your purchase.

Been weedeating since I was kid but the old 80s/90s style weedeaters we had never seemed to let out string very well with dual strings, so I never bothered doing it. Hadn't had to do any trimming for a decade since moving away from the farm but got a Husqvarna and figured this would be a good time to look for any tricks for wrapping the line easier and doing the dual lines. Man the channels on the newer style heads are really nice! The one note I'd add is to check the way the line is anchored before cutting it. Mine doesn't have holes like that, it just has a notch between the two channels and you loop the line around that and wrap it. I didn't realize that before cutting, so the line is half what I meant to put on. That's alright though, I'll use the two smaller pieces and then I'll know for the next time after that. Still a nice helpful vid.

There are 2 notches on the head (cartridge)... clip the string in those notches before you put the head back in. They are there to hold the string for you while you put the head back in.

I’ve got the same model I use for hundreds of hours a year, the way he wound works but it’s better to do the top and bottom separately, starting with the top and not letting the line twist like he does because it will bind on itself and you’ll spend a lot of time and hassle having to stop progress to unbind it because the line won’t come out when you tap it. Keep extra full spools nearby or in your pocket to quickly swap out. I keep my machine running 90-95% of the time I bill my clients for and can clear more area than two people typically can.

drain the old gas out of it, you probably have corrosion in the carb from using ethanol gas, take it to a shop or replace it with an electric one. Milwaukee and Husqvarna make great ones as well as Toro. Buy the battery powered ones and never look back my friend

There are two notches on the reel you can stick the string in to hold it in place as you put it back in the weed wacker head. Just a little tip that helps keep the string from slipping out of your fingers so you don't have to start winding all over again LOL

Do the top first, put it in the notch, then the bottom. Then there is a groove that will hold the spool in place while you insert the line into the two metal holes on the base. Pop on the cap, pull the strings, and whip.

Buy you the "SPEED" feed type head. So much easier & faster. Keep your string INSIDE a cardboard box away from the sunshine. Spray the roll with silicone spray or dip in water from time to time to keep it hydrated and from sticking.

Josh! ive had a bunch of the weed wackers over the years and I just picked up the Echo SRM-225 like you said with the speed feed head! It is deff my favorite for sure! Second thing is Oregon makes a very good product! I love their power cut chains for my saws! I run that chain on my Echo CS-490 and my old Mcculloch, id be curious to try that string line! Thanks for the tips as always!

If your weedeater line does not feed when you bump it, it could be that it needs to be wound in the opposite direction. I had to wind mine in the direction opposite the arrow marked on the reel to get it to work.
