I am so thankful I found you. You really show the steps to each task. Most important was showing the 2 different Labrador styles so well I can make a well informed decision on exactly which type of Lab I want. I am a 65 year old lady prospector for fossils and jewelry rocks. My little Chicky was a mixed Border Collie and Australian Kelpie. I adored her and loved the time she spent with me. When she died after her spayed operation was on the 13th of December I felt like my heart had been ripped out if my body. Today is the first day I could think or talk of her with out crying. I suffer from PTSD since 6 years old but, didn't find out what was wrong with me till my 50s. Labs and Border Collies are 2 of the breeds that make good therapy dogs. I didn't know this at the time when she was gifted to me 6 months ago. I know now why it hurt so bad to lose her. It's a natural ability they have to help people like me. Chicky was a challenge to me to train which got me outside. She went with me to everywhere because I couldn't bear to be without her. But, I couldn't get much work done 😆 because she wanted to help me with everything I was doing so I had a long line attached to a metal stake. She could rest in the shade and still see what I was doing in the house. It's what they call a tiny house. Except I don't have wheels so my little house is called a shed to house. I have two eight by 12 foot lofts and a 4 by 12 front porch. And since it's it is diy I need a dog that can be still if I am doing a task like putting in insulation in my walls. I am a widow with my cranky old lady cat. But, she's a cat not an animal that will let me toss my arms around her when I need comfort like my Chicky did. I do right long posts sorry it's part of my stress disorder. I just wanted to let you know how important it is for me to find the right dog. My land lords wife is my care giver. They have 5 little dogs I call the bark patrol 😆. I raised Pomeranians years ago and they would do the same thing as they ran out the door to the yard. Growling and barking they charged out the door. Warning all intruders to be aware they were ready to do battle with any and all challengers 😆. Once again I want to thank you very much for your wonderful training videos. Ms Michal 🙃☕💖👍

Nope, I prefer field labs hands down. The big heavy dogs are clunky and not athletic enough to do a six hour hunt over a lot of ground. The field lab looks like th e dogs I grew up with and they were pretty great dogs...very balanced temperaments and just good all around dogs.

They help you stay active and keep you off the couch they're great for me. They are excellent motivation to keep you moving. Mine has me at the dog park everyday for 2 hours and then home to swim. Then she would want to play ball and swim all day. She can dive to the bottom of a 6ft pool and retrieve balls and she was an excellent swimmer and retriever from day one as a puppy. American Labs are awesome. And my Luna is swole

We have the english lab. Very good well mannered, well behaved dogs. They shed alot. That's one thing to take in account when choosing an inside pet. Is it worth it? Yea. I want two more so this one that was trained by our german shepherd, can pass it on. If you're interested in a hiking dog, it's best to have a back up dog per say an american lab. The english is very slow and get tired easy. There's no springing over a creek there. It's a push through slipping and plunging. They are beautiful dogs and I admire them for what they are. Two thumbs up on this wonderful video

Love your work and videos. I'm from Perth Australia and have a two year old male chocolate lab. English style. When you said : "Doing the hard things are better...for everyone." Love that advice and i take my dog to different places in suburbs, parks and in nature. . My dog doesn't have a strong retrieval drive on land but in rivers and at the beach, he is a different dog. It's as if he was bred for water retrieval. He would match the field lab for water work but fits all the attributes you describe on land. Only has about 45 minutes of work in him but at the beach he has the potential to over do it. He is well socialised, plays and says hello to many but then comes back to me.

I’ve had a number of show/English Labs that are very good retrievers and love to swim. They could do a sit+stay+wait retrievals, and are even good for duck and goose hunting. Their favorite trick is going to get the newspaper on the driveway in the morning and bring it inside to us. My point is, I don’t think things are necessarily as black & white as Stonnie makes it seem. But I think he certainly knows what he’s talking about. My Labs are easy to tire out when needed, and they love to take naps and will do anything for food.

I don’t make things black and white, I speak in generalities and I always show examples of what I’m saying, in action. I don’t have any videos where I’m not actually doing the things I’m talking about. Trust me, if you worked with dogs all day, everyday, you would have a much greater respect for genetics.

This is an interesting take. Here in Canada, home of the Labrador Retriever, we distinguish the two between conformation (show) Labs vs field (hunting) Labs. Big round block heads with the thicker bodies are show Labs, and the leaner bodied, narrower faced dogs are hunting Labs. It's interesting that despite being a Canadian breed, Americans differentiate them between English and American. 😊

Canada is part of the North American continent. Maybe the original lab dog breeds came from England? Either way this does an excellent job of showcasing labs. I had a field lab and he was impressive, a physical and athletic specimen. My friend had a lab and said she couldn't make a 5 mile run. My dog learned how to catch a Frisbee on the first day within the first hour. His dog specialized in sleeping and eating. My dog would swim in ice cold water and run all day, I mean all day. I'm retired infantry and that dog could easily do 10 mile runs with me, rest, and then do it again. He ran 5 miles before he was 3 months old. That dog was as tough as the toughest infantry man that I ever saw.

Quoted text Taken from AKC website I might add that the breed dates back to the 1500’s “The Labrador Retriever is the traditional waterdog of Newfoundland, long employed as a duck retriever and fisherman’s mate. The breed began its steady climb to supreme popularity in the early 1800s, when Labs were spotted by English nobles visiting Canada. These sporting earls and lords returned to England with fine specimens of “Labrador dogs.” (Exactly how these dogs of Newfoundland became associated with Labrador is unclear, but the name stuck.) During the latter half of the 19th century, British breeders refined and standardized the breed.”

Same here in the UK. We have show types and also working/field Labs. We have some excellent working Labrador Retrievers going back many generations and their working genes are exported all over the world, including the US. So, the use of the word 'English' for US show Labs is a misleading and redundant term. Show Lab or working Lab would be a more accurate description. Mind you, we don't have 'English muffins' in the UK, yet another US invention. :)

Love the channel but it really irritates me when he keeps saying English labs and American labs it’s simple ones a working line the other is a showline same as all breeds there’s a working line and a show line it seems as he’s just trying to make out that the American labs are better and the English ones are just fat and lazy which isn’t the case far from it

Stonnie, these videos are great. So informative and such a mood lifter. You're like the Bob Ross of dog trainers. Kudos to Eli's camerawork. I'm hoping for your insight on how my partner and I can best choose between a Show or Field lab pup. We both work 4-5 days a week, but are reasonably active otherwise. We know we can give our pup/dog 30 - 50 minute runs about 4-5 times a week and a 30 minute walk everyday, however once we're at work we'd be out for the day. Our dog would have access to a small garden whenever, and we are ready to arrange for doggy daycare/dog walker 2-3x a week. We also go on long walks/hikes 2x a month (between 3-6hrs). My inclination is to go for a Show lab as they seem like they'd be happier as a sackhound while we're at work (and possibly would adapt to living with our young cat?), but am not sure they'd be able to keep up with a morning 3-5 mile jog or long weekend hike. Are show labs non-endurance exercise dogs? I would appreciate your insight as I don't want to demand to much of a chunky monkey, but then also don't want to set up a field dog to get cabin fever! Thanks!

Great video, dogs are wonderful. There are exceptions on the English's energy level. I have a 2yr old English girl - - Stella; her energy level is amazingly high, but very manageable as long as you manage it. She is literally 14 hours on and 10 hours off. We get up at 5:30am and she is wiped out by 19:00-19:30. Stella needs her 2 walks a day, and some play time; has been eager to please from day 1. 8 weeks old, on the long drive home from the breeder, she just new not to urinate in the car, while on Mommy's lap. We had one accident in the house the 2nd day, and that was it! Stella is also an incredible swimmer, dove in the water as a small pup without any fear. I have to use treats to get her out of the water and to rest, otherwise I think she would hurt herself. Go,go go. We call her Michael Phelps now! She's a full throttle English and somewhat Alpha in some social situations - and a very good home alarm system. Extremely beautiful and very loving and sweet with all people, I just love my English Stell's Bells!

My Charlie boy was literally the best of both worlds. His Mom was a Yellow American Lab and his Dad was a Yellow English Lab; both pure breeds. He was extremely intelligent, BY FAR the best retriever I have ever seen, super loyal, clingy and very willing to please. He loved swimming and water and tennis balls like you can't imagine. He had the heart of a champion and gave 150% in everything he did - very competitive. He was at home riding on a quad or buggy, in a boat, hiking, shooting or laying around at home. Of course, playing catch or fetch with tennis balls was his favorite, especially if it was in the pool or a lake. We had many games and variations he liked to play. I'd come out of the bathroom after showering and there would be a tennis ball laying there and Charlie would be hiding next to the bed, waiting for me =) He was pretty much never on a leash, even in our urban Las Vegas home. He was taught not to go in the street at an early age. He didn't have the high prey drive that get's them exploring and running off. He was very food oriented, but also well-behaved. I always said I could leave a steak dinner on the coffee table and go take a nap without having to worry. He never chewed anything or tore anything up. He had about the cutest face you could imagine. His build was on the smaller side with a big chest and short legs - stocky/athletic. 76lbs. I always joked that his low center of gravity helped his agility - he could catch pretty much anything haha. I lost my little buddy last year, at a few months short of 14. I know I'll never have another dog quite like Charlie, but I am lucky to have been blessed with him. I'll always miss him. So, I imagine there are strong feelings and beliefs about keeping the (English and American) Lab breeds pure, but I really think there's a place for a mix of the two.

I own a English lab and a English/American lab. Both are great in certain ways. My full English lab is very stubborn she will just stop on leash and put her back legs out when she sees people or another dog she wants to see it cracks me up. Where my English and American mix is easier to communicate with and is willing to listen more and has the calmness of an English lab.

Pretty sure my black lab (7 months) is a mix of both. His dad and brother (my uncles dogs) both look more English while mine looks more American in appearance. Their lineage is all hunting and field trial dogs. All three of them are pretty ok with being chill and just hanging on the couch but they absolutely get excited to go outside and switched on when retrieving work starts and could do it all day. They definitely love swimming too. Seems like the best of both, he’ll hang around the apartment during the week (obviously with some walks and retrieving in the evening) and run around and work hard all weekend at the ranch.

One observation I would like to point out, having had both a field lad and an English lab up here in Canada... the energy level thing seems to reverse when it is below -10C and we have a foot of snow on the ground. The field lab seems to want to go inside at a certain point while the English who un the summer is a bit lazy just goes and goes. Small sample size to be sure but climate seems to have a big effect

I was raised with labs from a very early age. I’m lucky my parents love them also. Even in the military training included explosives and and sounds and smells like people. All it took a tennis ball to train them. We were honored to parachute together for president Reagan. Another lab Duke saved my Grandson from drowning in my pool .placed his nose under his arm pit and swam to steps . I am deeply proud of the labs of all them that has came into my lifetime. I think my back lab is a mix of both, he has a chunky face and body of an English type (that's what he is meant to be) but his legs are definitely American. Very interesting to look at as he towers over the other labs in my area who are all English types. Great videos by the way 👍.

I have an English Golden. The more I see the English lab I see the similarities more and more. I really like the breed. What he decribes here carries over to the golden accept throw some of the golden rambunctiousness in. Shes also been taking to retrieving, stalking and flushing in the backyard too. Slowly been introducing her to firecrackers. Next fall she should be ready for the field.

jann/TX/ let's just have conversation because we all love dogs...this is just my opinion and there are many varieties of opinions...so we gather all the info and make our own judgement/opinions...just like anything else, the difference and a lot of it has to do with the breeding stock...show dogs are somewhat laid-back while the hunting dogs can be a very active dog (they have to be) and both are working dogs...look at their generation of pedigrees...what do you want to do with your pup?...take for instance, a west german shep is totally different than an east german shep...both are good working dogs...but one is geared towards shutzhund with a very high protective instinct lineage for generations...but that doesn't mean they can't be loyal and loving family member...and both golden retrieve and labs are very good dogs and that is why they are popular worldwide...but people want family dogs not so much hunting dogs unless you are a hunter...and about the price, just because the dogs cost a lot doesn't mean it is the best dog that money can buy...there are no good or dumb dogs just no good and dumb owners...one can ruin a beautiful dog by neglect and lack of training/exercise…scientist have said dogs are capable of learning up to 165 words...that's amazing but there are lots of variables in that accomplishment...look at the trained labs on ytube; one I viewed knew 32 commands...amazing...and there are mix dogs that are just as highly intelligent, beautiful, loyal, devoted, and loving dogs too....and sometimes, we mix the two words of intelligent with trainability...the lab I have now (cost me $1000) when I asked the owner if labs are smart, she said they are not smart...but it tell you, this dog is smarter than the dickens with a high prey drive instinct...I just have to remember to work him...but you know owners sometimes have kennel blindness in which a person thinks their dog is the best...he is not the best and there are more things to learn (that's on me) but he does know many commands...for instance, I taught him how to weave between my legs in a very, very short time...he picked that up quickly...and he is smart enough to know that I am the alpha dog which sometimes owners forget to instill in their dogs and THEN, wonder why the dogs are the pack leader...GR have long hair/ Labs have short hair and both shed (clean-up time)...and both can be very active/not so active dogs...and you have to be devoted to training and exercise and feeding with good quality dog food (just like body builders/healthy people have to eat good foods)...a little sacrifice on our part goes a long way for your pup to be a great family/working dog in life and he will thank you with so much loyalty, devotion. love in return...you can take a brother and sister from the same stock/litter and one will be better/smarter/obedient/more personality/lazy than the other...why?...I guess it's like kids...and the good thing, you can accomplish a lot or as little as you want with both breeds...check the generation of stock/ titles in obedience if any and their prey drive...however, that in itself does not guarantee you the best pup but it sure can give you a head start...read all you can...this is all just my opinion and what I have learned...do I talk to much?...see what you got me started?...cheers...

Thank you for your great explanations. We have lost two labs recently to cancer and want another lab that will duck and field hunt for pheasant. Our English lab had a better nose for finding pheasant as opposed to the American lab but the American land stayed attentive duck hunting. Do English labs have an advantage with scenting birds? Do English labs have an advantage swimming for ducks with wider webbed feet? Thank you

My Lab seems to be a mix of Field and English lab. She has the look of both and the actions of both. Is that possible? And what advice for the mix of both in one?
5 жыл бұрын
It is absolutely possible. I had one. He was fairly blocky but had fairly decent endurance. Luckily, he also had the athleticism of an American with the “off switch” of an English. He was a great dog. My unsolicited advice would be the same as Stonnie has offered in other vids; exercise and praise is key. Wash, rinse, repeat. However, learn when your dog is “done” and don’t push them well beyond their limit. Most people will never learn the capabilities of their Labrador anyway but you don’t want a dog that becomes fearful of the exercise and training. Good luck.

I have a yellow lab, definitely field build, but I've put in the work so that he behaves great inside and knows it's a 'calm' space to relax. He loves walks and fetch, but especially swimming. Absolutely a gentle giant (he's 87lbs and not overweight at all, just a tall boy), but I got him a bit late and he wasn't well socialized when he was younger and kenneled WAY too much, so on walks if people are nearby he gets real anxious and starts freaking out, just very over stimulated and loud and pulling or flailing at the end of the leash. I would love to have him just walk up and meet everyone, socialize and get used to people more but with Covid and his deep loud bark, people are even less likely to let him near them. Using a squeeky toy so far has been the best for getting his attention back on me so that he's less intimidating to people, any other recommendations?

We don’t say “field lab or show lab” in England it’s “working Labrador or show lab” just so you know 😂. The working labs are the ones that go out shooting and retrieve the pheasants and ducks etc and the show lab tends to be a family dog or used for guide dogs for the blind

My English lab is high energy, athletic, high endurance springy muscular dog. He looks like a field lab in the body, actually even more muscular (a bit pit bullish even). No otter tail, it is pretty skinny. The only thing that sets him apart from a field lab is a more square face. his siblings are very much like him. So if you want a lazy lab watch out, not all English ones are chubby and lower energy.
