Do you do work with reactive dogs? She is standoffish with new dogs & strangers or people that try to reach out toward her. At the time I rescued her they said she was a Siberian husky, but found out later she is half Malinois. having races Siberians I knew little of this breed. Thru Rosie, I have come to respect the breed! They are amazing dogs. She is very smart, curious, and just loves our crude home made agility stuff. I took her to a basic obedience class when I rescued her ( puppy farm pup) months old but then Covid hit and everything went on-line. She does well with my Siberian and labX rescues. I tell people NOT to reach for her, nor try to pat her or even lean toward her, but please tell me why they still do it???

I just love your videos and your style of training/handling! Because of your insight i always take my 2 year old Australian Shepherd, Finn, to a baseball field behind our house that's fenced in so he can safely run his brains out before our walks. Definitely makes a HUGE difference! Now whenever someone asks me how to get a dog to stop pulling during a walk, i always recommend either a good game of fetch or a free run beforehand and i also point them in the direction of your videos to check out. :) i 100% agree that exercise is KEY to having a well behaved dog, trust me, im an Aussie owner 😂😂 he will literally go around the house and pick on everybody in the house if he doesnt get his exercise or any stimulation lol he will tip the garbage can over, he'll grab his leash of the counter and bring it down to me and then start swinging it around or if i try to grab it he runs to the door 😂, he'll steal a piece of your clothes or if your my daughter, he'll steal one of her stuffed animals or dinosaur toys lol and he just loves to throw his toys at me or he'll come up to me when im sitting on my bed leaned back or laying down he'll come over, sit right up next to me where he's like standing over me, and he'll drop his Kong onto my chest or lap to fill it for him! 😂 definitely a velcro dog too, he's right by my side always ❤️❤️ Anyway! Just wanted to thank you a million times for your wisdom!

It was scary .He would walk 10 steps then lay down , took us forever to get to the pond. Scariest moments ever ☹️ I’m talking about a GSD acclimated to -20 C from 12 weeks puppy. NewZealander: we have tar-sealed side walks, summer time gets too hot for the foot pads by luch time. But we're lucky it's only a few months of the year, so people still like walking mid day and the dog friendly shaded trails region wide get swamped with all sorts of leisure pups. I take to the evening set from autumn, we're more business. Anxious fatigued 'hotdogs' are a distressing sight of summer, especially hiding under coffee tables for a little shade.

RUFFWEAR makes a great collapsing bowl. Rolls up and fits in your pocket. I keep a few old tonic bottles of water in the freezer. Always have one when we hit the adventure trail. With my personal and the frozen we are covered. All of our outings have some form of water to cool off in. Our English sleeps in the snow and crashes through the thin edge ice on the ponds. The summer heat will hurt them if you push too hard. Be safe people! Carry your weapon! Try to love your critter as much as it loves you! Thanks for the lesson Stonnie!!!

So observed this the weekend that’s just passed because my retriever went from below 50 to over 70 in a week (in NYS - sorry). He looked at me on our hike as if to say what the heck happened here?? When we got home, I used the ferburator grooming comb to pull out a lot of his winter sub-coat but it’ll take a few weeks to acclimate…lots of water (and loved your previous vlog on the milk bottle waterer to have in your car).

@rocco24512 жыл бұрын
Great video as always! I live in southwest Florida so am very aware of the heat. Walking early in the morning and after sunset to keep them cool. The only thing I wanted to add was to tell people to stop shaving your double coated dogs!!! There are people around here that shave their labs and golden retrievers “to keep them cool” We all know that they’re trying to cut down on the dog hair in their house. Stop it! They are double coated for a reason. Their coat keeps them insulated in winter and allows them to be able to swim in icy water and it also insulates them from the heat and helps to keep them cool. For educational purposes double coated dogs have an undercoat (the downy layer) and the guard hairs (the stiffer hairs on the outside of the coat) cutting the coat removes the guard hairs which actually help reflect the sunlight. The guard hairs keeps your dog from getting sunburns. When you cut the guard hairs they may not grow back correctly or take a very long time to grow back at all. If your dog only has the undercoat the heat can get trapped in the fur and cause overheating in the dog. If you don’t like the dog hair in your house then just brush your dog more often. Using something that helps get out the undercoat also creates more circulation for air to reach the dogs skin and this will keep them cooler. Good luck 🍀

Wonderful video, Uncle Stonnie - very informative. See, even with all research in the world and good script writers, youtubers that only read from scripts CANNOT provide that level of insight, as demonstrated with the fatigue metres of various real-life dogs. Not stock-images dogs. For my Estrela Mountain Dog, summers are definitely tough, even though it is local breed here in Portugal, designed to guard livestock during icy winters and hot summers high up in the Estrela Mountains. But, that black-tipped fawn colored double coat. Lovely to look at, but it just propels that fatigue meter out a lot. So we acclimated her to the water as a young puppy. Now, we can almost measure the temperature by evaluating the time she stays put in the pond, just lounging, before coming back out. (No ACs here in rural Portugal).
@christal26412 жыл бұрын
Stony, I usually agree with you, but as a MINNESOTAN who has had an Aussie, I can tell you that Aussies, Labs, and all the double- coated dogs DO TAKE OFF THEIR WINTER COATS! One spring, I collected all the fur my Aussie released. I spread it out on the tips of my raspberry hedge. The birds took it all away in a day or two! Warm spring nests!

Are you thinking these traits are genetic or conditioned over time? A bit of both, I assume. So, a lot can be improved with training, and their threshold built up to tolerate more environmental changes right? Not about the heat of course. But the squirrelly and "on alert" behaviours you mentioned can be improved through more exposure. I think of course, confidence building from the ground up would be a priority too. Your obstacle course? Is fantastic for that.

Stonnie- Quick question from Arizona aka HELL. Great video just in time for summer! I'm in Arizona with 4 Belgian Malinois (1 very high drive, 1 high drive, 2 pet quality but need routine exercise). It's starting to be in the 80s° am to over 101° plus out til after 8:00 pm; soon it won't be under 95° am - up 120°out during hottest part of the day. I work them before dawn and after 7pm but their malinois tongues hang out in true malinois style most of the time. It's just hot, hot, hot here for the next 4 months. I've been taught to watch the color of inside their inside ear's skin, and tongue darker as indicator of getting hot. Deep dark gums and tongue is extremely over heated. I watch for the color changes of their inside ears/tongue hanging out. ( Your heat meter description was great! Lol). I think my 2 higher drive dogs would chase the ball or flirt pole til they dropped dead, which I would never allow plus I get worn out too from the heat. When I start seeing heavy panting, redder ears and tongue, I bring them in to cool down (slow walk with me inside ac at 74°), cool em down some and take them back out a few times. It's just so hot here, bit of breeze in pm, some shade but not a lot. I've always wanted to put a pool out there, but I heard when dogs work and get in water causes a "water blanket" which can keep heat in. Is there any truth to that? I don't have a pool but I'd love to get one! I love the no shoes training you did in this video. I learned petsafe heat resistant turf/artificial grass for pets is a lie following my dogs out to train barefooted. I got about 40 feet away from the patio with burning feet! I've seen dog stick on pads for walking in the heat on asphalt but haven't researched them enough to have opinion on them. My dogs do where shoes when out in heat walking in uncontrolled environments (not the park, or maintained backyard). I may rethink it based on your video. Cactus is everywhere here too. Quick question: How long after feeding dogs do you wait til you exercise them? I try to wait 60 minutes, but is that too long? And reverse that question. If you hold back feeding until after exercise what's a good wait time? Thank you for sharing your videos! I love them!

I’ve got a Chesapeake/Lab mix. It’s like this video was made for me. My dog has just awful heat tolerance. Really, notably bad. (Like father like son.) And while I knew some of the signs to look out for, there’s some key stuff I didn’t, and I really appreciate it. Especially the bit about fetching with a ball-he is an obsessive retriever, and it makes him visibly annoyed when I keep his trips short during the heat. I’ll have to try a toy that allows for more airflow. Or keep bringing him to the frigid Lake Michigan beach that’s a 5-minute walk away, but once the lifeguards go on duty, that's a lot harder to pull off.

Love this. Thank you for sharing it. We had grand adventures in the woods this winter, out daily for 60-90 minutes. Now the fields are getting sprayed, and there's algae in the ditches so we're sticking to home. I walk around part of the backyard, about 150 steps, and toss the ball to Tucker towards the middle. He finds me, and we keep going. When he gets tired and hot, he lays right down in the shade and I say " Good boy. Take a break." We have a dog pool for him too. It'll work until the crops are planted, then we can adventure on the lanes again.

Really liked this video. We're getting a black lab puppy in Aug (due to be born at our breeder's on 1 Jun) and I'll be watching all your puppy video's again so we'll be ready to train it properly. We're fortunate in that we've got a nice adventure area here on our 16 acre farm. We've go 7 acres in pasture, two streams (about 12' across and 2' deep), and a 1/4 acre pond that's about 7' deep. All we need now is an exercise area and we'll be able to create a mini Uncle Stonnie's :-)

THANK YOU! I have a black lab now. Always wanted one, but your videos encouraged me to make the plunge. She's a year and a half old and is a fetching queen at the dog park with a Chuck It and tennis balls. She gets hot long before she's tired. didn't realize that a ball could kill her .Changing things around. Going to get a bumper or frisbee which are hard to use at the park, she gets bored in her yard. Labs of her age anyway re very social. Ordered a small stock pool for her backyard to see if I can interest her more in her rather big yard. Wish me luck. QUESTION: What kind of bumper works on land. Curious what you used.

Ah, it’s hitting 90° this week in NJ with a broken AC so all our adventures are pretty much backyard parties in the wading pool lol. (5mo English Black Lab) So much doggy ice cream, and plain ice that she fishes out of her water bowl. What a time to work on obedience. /sarcasm

I’ve been freezing wet food in ice cube trays and my pup loves it. :)

Great content. Thank you. Loved seeing Henry again and learning what to expect from my lab in the future.
