Dual sports are also pretty great for commuting in slow traffic. You sit up higher than most road bikes, and they're agile for dodging wing mirrors when splitting. The other aspect that doesn't get talked about enough the combination of leg room and fuel economy. In every other category, roomy ergonomics = big engine = gas guzzler; and the smaller bikes are not only cramped, they tend to use budget components.
@Andrew-qc8jh Жыл бұрын

@@Andrew-qc8jh depends on where you are I guess. Some people use a chain through the front wheel, but it's not common where I am. Tbh, pretty much any bike can be lifted by a pallet hoist, so I don't think this is a dual sport issue.

If I want to hit some serious curves and practice my lean angles, the CBR is my tool. Absolutely thrilling. I owned the CBR a long time before purchasing the CRF and would never get rid of it. If I want to take it more relax, enjoy the scenery, and explore, then the CRF is my best companion. Dual sports can be pretty good off road with proper tires, closer to a dirt bike than any other format. At my age, I don't need the cutting edge performance of a motocross bike anymore, not sure I ever really did actually, so a dual sport suits me just fine. But the deciding factor for me is not having to trailer the bike every time I want to move it or go to a different trail. The lights on modern dual sports are so unobtrusive at this point you hardly notice they are there, so I would never own a non-street-legal bike again. I guess the weight and the steel mounts used to be a concern, but the lights are all mounted by rubber now and even dirt bikes have a battery and start motor so the weight of a few rubber mounted lights makes no difference for most people. And as for performance, well I'm still happy with my KLX250, but if you feel the need for speed KLM or the CRF450L has you covered at a higher price. So the long and short of it is, I just don't see why everyone isn't riding a dual sport, except for the motocross crowd.

hey andrew! thanks for the video. as a new, short, rider (5'6") - i'm quickly awakening to the reality of my own personal limitations with dual sports, the ride height. long story short (hah.), after saying no to a pre-ordered 300L, i had to re-evaluate what i actually wanted a bike for. all specs and research aside, it had to be comfortable to use, otherwise i wasn't going to go out and have a good time. all my previous research aside really didn't prepare me for getting into the showroom and attempting to throw a leg over half the bikes i had on my wish list 😅 priorities and expectations have changed, and exploring some lower options while i begin to grow my riding skills. of course the right tool for the job is critical, but the right sized bike will also make a huge difference in getting out there and being able to have fun! thanks as always for the content, appreciate your perspectives!

Dual Sport are Rugged, Indestructble, great concept for First Bike, but Substandard to learn to ride on. In my opinion, the tires are unstable in a lean.. they hunt for the line and require constant correction. The tire compounds don't grip pavement that well.. In the case of a Dual Sport For a First Bike, you'll need to at least swap to Street Tires to learn the basics well, IMO.

a light weight dirt bike made street legal is a good bike. When on a single track you can take off the mirrors, and with some up front thinking same with turn signals and possibly headlights. Many good street bikes can be found at a discount for highway or inter dirt road travel.

I think what truly separates dual sports from just plain enduros is that they have actual road engines. If you look at most normal enduros and hard enduros, they need very frequent maintenance and they‘re overall really needy motorcycles. Built to race. Motorcycles like the KLX and CRF-L are pretty de-tuned for an „off road 300“. Generally pretty durable and long lasting machines. One other example would be KTMs 690 enduro lineup, the 690 Enduro, the Husqy 701 Enduro, and the Gasgas 700 Enduro. That 690 is not a race engine.

@@THE.N1KO get a DRZ 400 SM. Those bikes are built like machine guns. Supermotos in general are really fun and capable machines, they‘re pretty good in the urban wasteland. And just because it has street tires doesn‘t mean it can‘t go offroad, Supermotos are purpose built hybrid motorcycles.

I bought a dual sport because I was an absolute beginner on a motorcycle and they were touted as great beginner bikes. An avid mountain biker, I thought that a Dual Sport would be great to ride from my mountain cabin down the road to hundreds of thousands of acres of Pike San Isabel National Forest. It was a great bike for a newbie like me to learn on. It was a 4 stroke with a low seat and super durable. However, what I realized is, I hate riding on pavement. It sucks! No interest at all. Get me on dirt and rocks and I go crazy. Took it to Moab and rode Behind the Rocks and was riding it like a dirt bike. However, I found I kept adding things to it to make it more of a dirt bike. So, I sold it and bought a dirt bike. Now I enjoy the comfort of driving my SUV on boring pavement to the trails; conserving my energy for what I love most, riding on gnarly technical trails on a dirt bike. The Dual Sport was a great first buy for me and it helped me learn but now I can't imagine riding on anything but a dirt bike and on dirt.

Many ppl buy adv bikes cause they like camping and want to ride around the places they are camping, so they think, "shit, perfect I'll buy me an adv and ride to go camping, perfect ... You are way better off buying a dual sport and throwing it on a rack or a trailer and driving your regular vehicle to said campsites like you already have been doing, just now bring a rad motorcycle with you to enjoy riding in the amazing spot where the campsite is located. When you think of the riding you want to be doing, like daydream about it, you imagine riding around the places near the camping, correct? Or at least mostly anyways ... You don't dream about the highway miles slog to get there and also after a long day of riding, it's way nicer to have a proper tent or RV with a comfortable place to crash and family and friends who don't ride there to greet you and enjoy the evening with no?! This is why dual sports are a better choice than adv bikes for the majority of people for sure. /blahg

Have you ever ridden a honda crf230l? It was only made in 2008 and 2009 before it turned into the crf250l. I just picked one up, im going to sell my wr250r, it's too tall for me. The crf230l is like a featherweight compared to that. One of the lightest dual sports out there. About 268 pounds ready to ride and a low seat height.

We have one of these here in Australia. Bullet proof, stable bike. Perfect learners platform - we always joke that the only way you'd fall off of it is if you jumped!! Best avoided if you have false teeth though!!! 😂

You would still call it a fly, disabilities don't change who you are, they just make you do things differently.

Great clip guys, thanks. Do you have access to the Voge 300 Rally where you live? Any thoughts? It's basically a fully loaded CRF300 for much cheaper. And those in the anti-Chinese bike brigade? Check it out. Incredible build quality. The Chinese are coming.....!

I do not have access to them atm. I have never seen it, had too look it up. Looks interesting to say the least.

@@MotorcyclesOffroad It's getting some really good reviews here in France. Very popular in Spain too. I know a couple of guys who've done some TET sections on it and have been really surprised by its capability.

What about it? I know someone who rides it daily with 5,000 miles on it.

As someone who just did their first non competitive offroad event (not sure if it's a regional name but they call 'em turkey runs) on a WR250R, I would have been way better off just buying a dirt bike and going through the trouble of making it street legal instead. Being new and bad is hard. But like that wasn't enough, my bike also weighs 300lbs and is on dual sport tires and it rained all night. Didn't even finish half the route and hardly had the strength to push my bike up the final hill before the shortcut back to the parking lot 😅. Someone let me ride their Xtrainer through the little loop around the parking lot and holy shit that thing is amazing.
