When a turkey hunter gets a crazy belief in his head and
can't shake if off it could very well hinder him from
being successful on a turkey hunt.
Here's two things that some turkey hunters can't

Thanks for the videos Dale. My biggest takeaway from you is to stay till noon, quitting time here in NY. I’ve killed more gobblers in the late morning the last few years, even on the quietest days

Do what works for you. I love sneaking close but I’ve called less and less as I get older. Turkeys are ghosts when they wanna be and loud as hell when they wanna be and it’s different every day. I love them and can’t get enough.

The way I've killed almost every Turkey. Hit the box call and see if he answers. If he answers I get out the slate and do little half circles about 4 times. If he answers to the slate, 9 times out of ten he's going to come check me out. Put down the slate and wait at least 30 minutes or so. Usually see him creeping up on me and wait till I can move to get my gun up. It works like a charm for me. I got busted by Turkeys creeping in on me because I picked up my call and started to call again before he got to me. I try to always wait at least 30 minutes or so. Thanks for the videos, I really like your dedication and hard work.

Yall pretty much got it right, but don't forget some just won't come in. I had one last year about 50 yards last year that just would not break had I paid attention I had a big ol water oak between him and I. If I could have got to that tree I could have take him home with me.

Again this video describes last year for us! Paralyzed and couldn’t talk myself to moving with my son hunting with me. 2 bodies would be to noisy or easily seen. Bottom line we were just out of range several times. Set up to conservatively and far away. It feel your experiences and those of hunters have changed a lot of what we were taught 20-30 years ago about turkey hunting. Heard a turkey will never…. Or a hunter will never…. and I’ve proven several old theories wrong. Each bird can be different and you gotta adapt not be stuck on 30 year old advice. Thanks for the videos!

We give turkeys WAY more credit than they deserve. Sometimes it just doesn't work out. Is it because they are rationalizing the situation? Absolutely not. Great video.

I started spring turkey hunting in 01, I remember hearing about call shy from the old timers all the time and if you call to a tom he'll get call shy,I don't really hear that much anymore now that you mention it.

Russ from Alabama, You are right about call shy gobblers, what shuts them down is the awful calling they get hammered with sometimes on these WMA's that I hunt. I have heard a guy on a slate trying to yelp or something over 30 yelps in a row ,over and over. The turkey shut up.

100% agree, Dale. Been turkey hunting for 20yrs...only 1 year we hunted a specific farm which held 3 Toms...it was the only spot we had that year. The birds became educated...big difference between shy and educated... Call shy birds is a myth.

It's not call shy . Where I hunt there more educated. By hunters calling to much before season . But will they come to a call yes . Like you have said Dale get in that bulb with them and talk to them give them something other then yeps . Cluck / purr whine in with them yeps . He will come in . If guys would listen to us older hunters they be way ahead of the game . Lot of time on ground guys lot of lesens learnd in that time !!! Guys Dale just trying to tell you what he knows works . He's being 100 with you . I know been at it long as he has . And I even have learned from him myself ! So thinks Dale for sharing what you know !!!!

I've been wondering about using electronic hearing protection during calling and listening to turkeys. I've ues this but found it hard to judge distance of the turkey and volume of my calling. Do you use hearing protection when you hunt turkey?

If you lived to 80. And turkey hunted every season only on the weekends, you’d only spend about 2.1 years of your life in the woods with the turkeys. Whats crazier than that if you get down to the actual hour. If you hunt 14 hours a day (6am to 8pm) for 2 days every week for the season. Its only 1 year spent hunting turkeys living for 80 years.

Yes moving has cost me birds but unquestionably over all being willing and able to be as mobile as possible upped my success on killing Toms over 300% Now I also learned (the hard way) there are absolutely times you just do not move And there is no better example of when not to move then when you are set up near perfectly within 50 yards of a lone roosted Tom that has no hens and you call to him he answers he flys down in your direction into very thick brush you instantly loose sight of him but hes gone silent and although not impassable there is a significant natural barrier that will discourage the Tom from traveling away from you (deep creek with near vertical banks) sit tight and wait him out This happened during my states youth turkey season two years ago was trying to get my youngest son a Tom I got impatient thinking Tom had gone down the brush line and crossed the fire line we were set up on to get to the picked corn fields behind us I was set up on my sons right side my friend on his left I said I was going to blelly crawl to the field edge behind us to see if the Tom was out thier displaying as they often did in the past I no sooner got out of my turkey chair had just got on my hands and knees to begin crawling and the Tom popped out of the thick brush dead across from us not 25 yards away he instantly saw my form and before my son could even get his gun shouldered the Tom vanished back into the brush anyone ever calls me the names I called myself after that there's going to be a fight. And yes Dale set up is absolutely everything in Turkey hunting absolutely without doubt having set up poorly has caused me 5x more Turkeys then them busting me moving or seeing my shape but not yet in range after spotting two strutting Toms out in a huge pasture I set up my son and I in the corner the of that pasture that dipped down a lot and figured any hen in the corner couldn't be seen by a Tom until he walked into gun range in area about 10 yards from the edge among a lot of fallen tree trunks from logging among younger trees while they did make for comfortable back rests they prevented any possibility of swinging a gun vary far left or right without hitting a sapling or fallen log We couldn't set up on the field edge because we had zero cover and would be highlighted by the ultra bright sun it was 10:30 all the hens were gone to nest and perfect time to call in a Tom I called to the Toms who were about 130 yards away and they immediately started towards us much faster than I thought they would I was expecting them to remain in the field but I lost sight of them my son suggested we move to be able to shoot more effectively into the woods behind us and I said no just stay put but about 10 minutes later I spotted a red and white head then a second one at about 30 yards behind us and both Toms commenced to gobbling and displaying and my son couldn't get his gun around past a sappling I called and they answered and stayed around for about 20 minutes but lost interest and left If I would've moved when my son wanted to He'd of got his Tom total green horn mistake first not setting up to be able to shoot behind us and worse when the Toms went into the woods not instantly shifting to shoot behind us.

your every bit as good a turkey hunter as i am and i dont say that to just anyone. I killed my first one in 1973 hunting SE Ozark mts. hunting 1000s acres full of birds that had never heard a hunters call. My life wouldn't be what it is today had it not been for turkeys. I bought a house in the Uwharie mts. 30 years ago and i listen for gobbles from my back porch every morning and kill one from time to time nowdays as i cant walk much and i want somebody else kill him when i do hear one. like my grandson/ When i was able for years i hunted every legal day at a min. lol I had a very good pair of boots i only wore turkey hunting and i wore the soles off them after a number of years. I was here when several counties started opening up for the first time. The first year the birds came to calls like ive not seen in many years. They hadnt been hunted and it almost wasnt fair but i killed a bunch anyways. Also very few ppl. had hunted them and were just learning and id hunted all my life. Ive taken lots of people to kill there first turkeys . I really gained fame once killing a gobbler that the people could hear from the morning stop and go cafe. Everybody and there brother hunted that bird but on the 5th 6th day of season and nobody had killed him i informed the regulars that id just go ahead and kill that bird since nobody else can. lol He was down and up and a good 500 yards away from me at daylight and unresponsive to my best calling efforts . So I gobbled at him and he answered right off. hes still a long way off and after just a minute i gobble again and he has cut the distance in half , i just got sit down at the closest tree and here he comes running up the hill at me mad as hell looking to fight before i took his life. Some memories last forever and i suspect there will be turkeys in heaven.

I’ve been turkey hunting for 30 years. Please don’t crawl in the spring woods on public or private land. People get shot every year so don’t be a sad statistic. You have no idea who is within shotgun range of you. Ask yourself is your life worth a turkey?
