The idea was that upgrading the gpu 1, 3, 5 years from now would be infinitely cheaper and easier than upgrading the cpu since I'd likely have to get a new mobo as well. So I over budgeted the cpu and got a gpu that I was confident could handle my gaming needs until 2024 or so. From what I gather the answer is 'slap the strongest INTEL processor and a beastly GPU in' but that lacks nuance and refinement. Plus it would have me spending way too much for not much in gains.
@Carrinthe2 жыл бұрын
@@millgiass I went with an R9 5950X and rtx 3080 combo. For gaming it just doesn't matter which modern mid tier and better Intel or AMD cpu you have when you game at higher resolutions, the gpu is your bottleneck most of the time especially on 4K. For productivity work that can utilise all cores more is better. The 12900 and 5950X perform about the same but I much prefer the 5950X because it's much more energy efficient and also you never have to worry if your program runs on a E or P core. Maybe the smart money is on the i7-12700 that's only slightly slower but much cheaper and also much more energy efficient compared to the 12900.
@millgiass2 жыл бұрын
@@Carrinthe Seems so. Seems like both the 12700K and 11900K beat out the 5950X in most tests. Less power consumption is definitely a nice thing, I just absolutely hate how slow rendering videos is. Imagine if the big video editing programs actually let you use the GPU instead of the CPU, or better yet, both at once. You'd probably render faster than playback speed at that point. It would be delightful.
@Carrinthe2 жыл бұрын
@@millgiass The 5950x is definitely slower in single thread applications but when a program can utilise all cores it's certainly on par with the 12900k and faster than the 11900 or 12700. But in most tests the 5950X is handicapped by not enabling PBO and that means it is capped on his base clock of 3.4Ghz. and yes than the 5950X seems a lot slower compared to those other cpu's. Enabling PBO (just as easy as enabeling xmp) with aircooling I get the 5950X all core at 4.3GHz and a Cinebench R23 score north of 29000. Higher scores are possible with better cooling.

gpu prices haven't been crashing nearly as much lately. Prices have been rather flat for a while. Barely reaching 2020 isn't good enough given the next gen is around the corner. It's still difficult to find a 3060TI at 2020 msrp. 3060ti has been selling out within minutes whenever it goes in stock at 2020 msrp prices. cards are still overpriced imo here in Canada at least for Nvidia. Currently I'm on a 5600/3060. upgrading the GPU when the next gen releases seems like the logical best upgrade for performance improvement as even a 5800x3d seems to offer no improvement on a mid tier gpu
@PCBuilderChannel2 жыл бұрын
5600 / RTX 3060 is very good right now. AMD has changed their business strategy back to being the value provider at lower cost. NVIDIA has not changed strategy (even their "OMG everything is on sale now" announcement two days ago is just GPUs that still cost $1000 or more).

I'm also in Canada and, yes, it's been frustrating. I'm hopeful that the current inflated prices are the last gasp before the imminent flood of used mining cards, and the announcements of next gen. I'm kind of surprised that you didn't mention the 12700k as the "cheap" ultimate build CPU, as it's not that much worse than a 12900k, all other things equal. Considering the price difference of the two is about 200-250 USD, that can really free up money for a better performing GPU, even at the 3080 and higher level. Alternatively, as others have mentioned, you can put that money towards getting a larger PSU if you're planning to upgrade to a next-gen 4080/7800XT or better GPU due to what has been reported on those specs right now. Or get better memory or add a little bling to your system. That said, there isn't that much an advantage in going for the 12700k versus the 12700f in terms of price to performance. From what I've been able to gather, the 12700k makes memory tuning a little easier since not all B660 motherboards will support memory tuning beyond XMP with locked CPUs, and, despite it being the unlocked CPU, it seems to have a little bit better power efficiency than the 12700f. Performance-wise though, they seem to be identical at stock settings. Only other thing to comment on is your insistence to getting a Z690 even with a 12600k. A good B660 will offer better features than a similarly priced (i.e. "cheap") Z690, so, if you're not planning to OC, a B660 can be a solid motherboard option while still benefiting from those E cores the 12600k has that the 12600 non-k and lower lack. I'd recommend the MSI B660 Bazooka, Mortar, and Tomahawk if you're just looking for performance, though the Asus Rog Strix certainly has aesthetic charm.

I am no expert but when doing VR you are essentially rendering the game twice in each lens. That means more graphical processing. Once you get into the 6GB/8GB VRAM GPUs you will notice VR is marketed on the packaging. I would say the most important thing is the GPU or VR, and second the headset you're using itself. I have a Oculus Rift S and it caps out at 80hz refresh rate and I think each lens can only get up to 720p. Upgrading my GPU will absolutely help but there is only so much it can do to fix my problem. I haven't played a bunch of VR titles or know if there's a specific game that is CPU heavy but if there is I am sure it will be that one outlier. TL;DR - Make sure you got at least a good midrange combo like in this video, and sink your budget into your GPU and Headset.

Great video, as always Jason. 👍 As someone who is a bit rusty when it comes to building (my last build was over 6 years ago), I feel like the CPU is the hardest part to know what to get, for me personally at least. I know that I wanna be able to play graphically demanding AAA single player games at 1440p/60+fps, and I'm probably going to do a little bit of creativity (blender, photo/video/audio editing and so on) too. I was thinking of something in line with the 5800X. But maybe I don't need it if I'm not going to do creativity tasks at a pro level? The GPU I'm aiming for is the RTX3080 10GB (12GB). Would I be fine with a 5700X or even a 5600X, or is a more powerful CPU (like the 5800X) recommended?
@PCBuilderChannel2 жыл бұрын
Go for the 12GB 3080 model if you can, it is actually faster in addition to having 2 more GB of VRAM (not as important but nice). 5700X would be fine especially for 1440p or 4K gaming. 12600K is a better overall CPU (but cost is more) if doing a lot of long duration multithreaded work, though the 5700X is no slouch at these tasks either. one topic that isnt talked about is how important monitors are and how they're quite costly parts. I was waiting for GPUs to reduce in price assuming that monitors won't be as pricey as GPU. a GPU that delivers UHD HDR at 120fps would need a monitor that is even more pricey than that GPU. now I am torn between buying high end GPU 6800/6900 and use with QHD-144/UHD-60 monitor Or reduce the GPU so that I can afford a high refresh rate large 4k monitor. :(

Go 1440p and get one with the bells and whistles, theres a reason its the choice of professional gamers. You can get 120+Hz, HDR, color accuracy, and more menu features. There are a lot of AAA 4K gaming scenarios where top end cards cant even serve up 100+ frames on high/ultra quality. If youre a content creator you could always invest in a color accurate, low refresh rate 4k later.

The crazy thing is that every 4k gamer I have spoken with says that 4k60hz is a waste of time. So if your not getting a 4k 120hz or better monitor is there even a point to getting a new graphics card when they come out? I mean if your were to get a 3080 today for 1440p that would give you another 2yrs for the monitor price to come down and for the graphics card tech to take another leap forward.

@tbonedude122 жыл бұрын
A 5600x is already too good for 1080p gaming and so is your graphics card most likely. If you get a 7000 series gpu before you get a new monitor you just completely wasted your money. You will see literally nothing different on your monitor with the capabilities of these cards, probably even the one you have now is heavily limited. If you have a 5600x rig you should already be on a 2k monitor with 120+hz period if you dont have that go ahead and buy the 7900xt it wont do shit. I think some people should just stick to what they know, as youre obviously just parroting pro gamers with this "high fps above all else" shit when no one else thinks that way.

Thank you for this. Finally I have a video to recommend to people I know who want to build a PC but won't listen to my advice. I told my friend that he would be much better off with a 5600x (5600, 5700x, & 5800x3D were not out at this time) vs a 3950x, but he listened to my incompetent cousin instead and went for the latter only because "it's the most expensive one bro, it's the fastest you can get". Despite this being *after* the launch of Zen3...and my friend literally just wanted to build a PC for gaming. They also went with a 3070 Ti, so it's kinda funny to think about how a sub-$200 CPU can better run that GPU than the $400+ he paid at the time for the previous gen Ryzen 9. Could've used that money towards a 3080 and gotten even *more* performance in gaming. This is also without factoring in the cost of the 360mm NZXT Kraken AIO he got to keep that 3950x cooled, when he could've done better and spent less overall.

Awesome channel. I just picked up an HP victus 15L for 400 . I’m not into RGB and not much space on the desk so for me this was perfect and been gaming without any issues or noticiable bottlenecking .

Nice video. I already have a i3 10100F CPU with a GTX 1060 and I wanted to upgrade my GPU. Would it be fine if I would upgrade to a RTX 3070 OR 3060 Ti? Thank you.
@PCBuilderChannel Жыл бұрын
Yes good upgrade, and I'd try to drop a new CPU in with it when you can. See our How to Upgrade your PC video for more

Im currently looking at a 13600k with a 4070, with a potential GPU upgrade in an few years would this be a good mix?
@rogued3mon414 Жыл бұрын
First off, get the ti version. It's just better and faster. You could also downgrade the. CPU if you have to.
@PCBuilderChannel Жыл бұрын
What Rogue said, its a fine combo but unless you need Nvidia for production I'd be going AMD GPU instead (much better price to performance) or if you do need Nvidia 4070 Ti. See our latest GPU Market Update video for lots more on this
@RedEtoGear Жыл бұрын
@@PCBuilderChannel Maybe swapping to Amd may be better but i live in Australia so the Price Difference is much larger between both Nvidia cards as one is $950 and the other is $1300
