Hi! Thank you for another interesting video. Glad that you have included treats for our furry friends. I have not read all the comments, but I wanted to add something. I once belonged to a dogs treats group and they always stressed that any meat that was going to be dehydrated raw for pets had to be deep frozen for at least a week to kill parasites. Also, after the raw meat treats have been dehydrated, and depending on the protein used, they had to be "oven blasted" for 5 minutes at 150C in order to kill bacteria harmful to humans handling the treats. Keep dehydrating!! :)

Love this idea!!! I just got a puppy so it's a timely one!! I used to make jerky all the time for my family and I discovered a little secret that works amazingly well. Go to your deli counter at the grocery store and have them slice chicken or beef or whatever fairly thin, not shaved, just thin. This meat is already pre-cooked. Take it home, marinate it, then dehydrate for awesome jerky!

Thank you Darcy for these recipes! It looks like Shelby really like your treats! This is so much better to do your own treats, you can make them to your dog’s taste or needs… and it costs a lot less than bought at the store. Unfortunately for us, we lost our beautiful furry friend Kimo over three years ago, I know hw would have loced them. Once I started making his dog cookies, he did not want any others… sometimes friends of mine wanted to give him their dog cookies or treats, but if they came from the store, hexwould not eat them. So I would make a batch every second weeks and freeze them… even when we went camping with him, they were on his list. 😊 I will share your video with my friends, I really like your videos, they are cery informative as well. Safe food handling recommends it. But you can also put it into an oven at 250F to blast for about 15 min to get rid of any bacterial issues. Dehydrators don't always heat to a consistent 160F, which is where the concern comes -thus the recommendation.

I bought several bottles of oriental fish sauce a few months back to encourage my cats and my pit bull Mosh to eat nutritious things I make for them that they sort of turn their noses up at. Couple drops of the stinky fish sauce and they think it's wonderful..hahaha. I'd like to make veggie treats using the fish sauce, but realize I'll need to keep them in glass jars so I don't have to smell them ! Ps..fish sauce is cheap.

Fish sauce is not vegetarian? Shelby says she doesn't understand what it means to not eat meat :D The sweet potatoes would work if you do a veg broth instead of chicken broth, but they can be hit or miss with dogs. Look at peanut butter treats that are all over the internet.

I can't give you an answer on that because I'm not a vet - and you would want to speak to your vet or a qualified pet nutritionist. It's dehydrated and they would need a lot of water support for it. I would freeze it or freeze dry it before I'd dry it, especially if it contains any protein at all.

Hello Darcy! This question is not about the dog treats, but about the DH Trays. The "book" says to "avoid scratching" the DH to put the trays in "smooth side" down. I wasn't too positive about which side they were talking about, but I see that you are loading the trays with the "lip" side down and the mesh side up. Is that what they meant? It made more sense to me to so it the other way since that gives you an "edge" to push your food against and contain it from spilling over, but perhaps my thinking is not correct. Can you confirm the correct direction of the trays? for me?

I was wondering, if I cook the chicken in the oven at 350 degrees just until done and then slice into thin pieces and dehydrate until completely dry will that decrease or even kill off the harmful germs? I saw another channel who said to "flash heat" chicken and any meats that might contain harmful germs for just a few minutes at the end of dehydration to kill germs and/or harmful bacteria. I am new to dehydrating and have no clue if this would work or not. What are your thoughts on this? Don't worry, I am not going to hold anyone accountable for my dog's health but myself. I am just curious as too whether or not cooked chicken dehydrated would be palatable. I am thinking my dog would like her treats prepared this way.

Yep - it's what I said, too - 250F oven for 10-15 min after will do the same thing. I prefer it to cooking at 350 because that can dry out the meat in not a good way. But some of the safer dehydrating tips from the safe preservation NCHFP recommend cooking first. It's up to you. It's actually not your dog's health that is the issue - their gut is different than ours. You are the one handling the meat - so doing that flash at the end is protecting you, not your pup.

We do pig ears.. I cut them into smaller bits (med size dogs) run the Cosori at 165 for 24hrs and the dog loves them.. No additives needed.

What kind of dehydrator do you have? I’m interested in doing my this myself :)

I used a Cosori in this video, but my main dehydrator is an Excalibur 6-tray -- You can see a few of the ones I've used and/or recommend in my Amazon store: amzn.to/3YlBJsW

I just opened up my first dehydrator, threw in some thin straps of beef and pork for my pup. The recipe book says 6hrs or until done but I have one question.if it's not dry tonight before bed can put it back in in the morning to dry more? Do I put it in the fridge over night?

I guess that was 2 questions 😅

Yes, put it in the fridge overnight and restart tomorrow.
