The thing about the changing of Ursula's song really hits the nail on the head my issues with the overall remake thing. Like, she's the villain manipulating the hero. You're not supposed to agree with her. Hello? I really hate it when people keep doing that with older animated family films. Like they say the live action remakes are "more mature and edgy" but they come as more pandering and like you said, children could figure out the context of the original.

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff disney needs to go back to their roots and stop pandering to the media and stop making kids out to be stupid when kids are very smart. also taking words out actually creates the issue they want to avoid by removing the main context. Yes, I hate when people say, "Ariel gave up her voice for some d@#$"." Like, did you not watch the first 15 minutes of the movie? She sang part of your world BEFORE she even knows Eric exists. She'd been collecting human artifacts for, presumably, years and was tired of just observing from afar. Meeting Eric was just the catalyst that gave her the final push to stop dreaming about the human world and actually do it. My only gripe about the animated movie is that Ariel sort of has other people fix her mistakes. While she understands her mistake, she's taken out of the climax a bit too fast so that Eric is the one who has to take out Ursula. Personally, I think this story also is about responsibility and how you still have to be careful with the decisions you make for your life. If you're not, your actions will have consequences.

@@DrawciaGleam02 Which actually opened up a real, big loophole, since Ursula doesn't mention Ariel's memory loss spell as another condition she must endure. Which would actually make the contract invalid (at least on Ursula's side). I know, it's magic & all, but they took over the part from the original where Ursula is shielded from Triton's power, cause the agreement in its basic format is a fair one. Yes, Ursula sabotages her later but, as mentioned, this was AFTER Ariel had agreed to the basic terms & conditions. It was simple - Human for 3 days. True love's kiss before sunset, if not: back to being a mermaid belonging to Ursula. Obstacles & difficulties were inevitable & what happens between becoming human & day 3 is "none of the contract's business". In this movie, she's even bound by blood, so every condition should've been clear or else it would backfire in some way. They could have addressed this "issue" by just making her write her name first & then that she's a mermaid, w/ everyone going like "Oh, dear, Ariel... Poor thing... you must've been in the sun far too long." That's it. If you REALLY must explain it, make the character try before she realizes how crazy it must sound to them. But why not create another illogical obstacle, unnecessarily stretching the plot? If you try to find logic in a fairytale as a writer/filmmaker, it means you do not understand the very essence of a fairytale at all, you do not believe in its magic, symbolistic language &, worst of all, the imagination & fantasy of your audience.

I remember that intro with Jodi Benson and the fish. Also, the criticisms the film has received are so ridiculous. I know many have already said the same but it does bear repeating that Ariel did not give up her voice for a man as she was fascinated with the human world before seeing Eric and she only went to see Ursula because of her fight with Triton. Also, there may be a little bias as Ariel was one of my first crushes. I remember really feeling uneasy and creeped out at two scenes in particular. The first was when Triton destroyed Ariel's grotto as that was definitely crossing the line and when Ursula became giant. I actually was able to see this film in theaters for a rerelease as I wasn't born when it originally released (that gives you an idea of how old I am) and it was my younger sister's first film.

So the song "Part of Your World" was almost cut because producers thought that kids wouldn't be able to sit still for the duration of it, eh?... Ladies and gentlemen, this is why it's important to not think of only the kids when making cartoons. It's a good thing the filmmakers thought of older audiences when making the movie. Seems like modern Disney has the attitude that animation is only for kids and as a result, their movies suck.

Yes! Thank you. Many people who make those types of criticisms don’t understand Ariel’s character and what she means to so many people. Howard Ashman specifically chose to have her sing Part of Your World before meeting Prince Eric. Ariel’s journey is about identity/wanting the highs and lows of a life you don’t have. So many people can relate to that. Yeah Ariel is obviously impulsive, but it makes sense that she would be so desperate to get what she wants that she chooses to make the deal with Ursula. Ariel’s agency, determination, and ambition are not only what makes her a good role model, but is something fundamental to the even the original story by Hans Christian Andersen. Also Prince Eric in deed is the ultimate Disney himbo.

Fun fact about all the "gave up her voice for a man". Here in Brazil, when se sings "wanna see 'em dancin'" was 1st translated to "wanna see A MAN dancing" in the subbed version. About 2 years latter some of the songs were recorded again and some parts were "fixed". This part of the song I mentioned was then changed to "wanna see A COUPLE dancing". I think it says a lot. That's not something a reccording studio will make out of nowhere. Things like that have to be commitioned by Disney. And to have that line changed shows that from the start she wasn't supposed to be worried about a man or love. She wanted to see the human world and that's it!

I love this movie for a few reasons. It not only spurred my love of mermaids, but I relate so heavily to Ariel’s strained relationship with Triton. My own dad has never done a good job supporting my interests (matter of fact, he tends to joke about them a lot, which is hurtful), but he has also done a lot to provide and prepare me and my siblings with a good life. Plus, the music is unbelievable and I’m pissed to hear that Disney+ nearly removed a documentary about one of their most important music men and story men. Without Howard, we would not have classic songs or story beats for “Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast.” Okay, rant over, haha! But please do more Disney movies! At the risk of having my comment blocked. I a black would like to weigh in on the problem with the remake and other movies that cast the way it does. As you are already in the industry I don't have to tell you that every bit of the production is meticulously looked over including the casting so Ariel being cast the way she was is not an accident and it's just happenstance that she's black. I'm not saying she's not talented she is but she was cast for a reason and her skin color is one of them. As a black person i find things like this completely insulting. For both disney and future writers instead of try to turn white characters black how about you just highlight and develop characters that were always black. We don't need your hand me down characters. Just like how you think it's insulting that little girls won't be able to distinguish between something the villain says in a song meant to manipulate. It is equally insulting to think that black people can not relate or connect with to people of other races. Consider the following when the inevitably remake the Princess and the Frog at no point will anyone think that the princess in that should be played by a white woman.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm definitely not speaking for anyone in the black community here and I definitely understand the feeling of being pandered to. That's completely separate from the valid experiences of bipoc consumers feeling belittled by Disney.

I am also a black woman, and don't have an issue with Halle's casting in the remake. For one, casting POC in "white" roles has been done before (see the Brandy Rodgers and Hammerstein Cinderella from the 90s where Brandy, a black actress, played Cinderella, among other black characters as well, and a Filipino played Prince Charming) but this only recently became a talking point for some reason, but black people in Hollywood are usually majority casted or written as slaves/oppressed people in the 50s in Oscar bait films, people in Africa, thugs, single moms in the projects, drug dealers, borderline racist comedic relief or wise shaman type characters to the white protag who barely get any screen time. Now that a black woman gets a role as big as a Disney Princess, now all of a sudden, people have an issue? Even though this was done before?? Maybe it is demeaning, maybe it is a hand-me-down (despite fairy tale roles like tlm or Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty or Snow White being a collection of tropes that could take place in any country and are race neutral)but for once, we're getting a black woman in a role that's not a stereotype stemming from the Jim Crow era, and that's a step forward in the right direction. Yes, we can relate to characters of any race, but it's nice to see us represented more in a flattering role on screen. Bottom line, I don't see an issue with it.

Sorta off topic but not: The black community is extremely anti-Asian, specifically Japanese. I'm black and am disappointed. When peole do black edits and there's criticism, they're like "YoU cAn Be BlAcK aNd jApAnEse!!! RACIST RAAAAA! JAPANESE MAJORITY!" Ironically the "Japanese majority" I never hear anywhere else, but I also never hear this stuff from, say, Latinos if they make edits. And as I saw someone mention, they never make them look blasian, they completely erase all the physical Japanese traits and only keep the name, and they almost always look like stereotypes. And it's like, black Latino, and other dark skinned people do have anime characters that are canonically non Japanese and dark, or even mixed and dark. The first one who isn't just a dark skinned Japanese person the people want to claim as "absolutely black" is Michiko Malandro, who's half Japanese and half Brazilian. Enjoy her, heck enjoy even the dark skinned Japanese characters. Just don't erase their Japanese heritage. The black community should be ashamed because it's clear they hate Japanese people. So it's like, even POC hate each other.

Ah, my birth year Disney movie! I've grown to like it more and more as I've gotten older. Despite everyone saying it was a kid's movie or a girl's movie, it was on the unintentionally eerie side to me as a kid. Things that made me tense up when I watched it include: -The setting at bottom of the sea -The creepy old sailor wagging the fish near the beginning -The shark -Scuttle being insane -Triton destroying Ariel's Grotto -Ursula, of course! A rather predatory villian for Disney -Ursula's garden -Flotsam and Jetsam for not being the usual goofy lackeys in an animated film -Chef Louie's cooking scenes with Les Poison -Flotsom and Jetsom's death with body parts left behind -Giant Ursula and the battle that ensues. This is one of two climaxes from Disney in which young me pondered 'There was bunch of singing animals eariler, how did we end up here?' -Ursula's death with body parts left behind On the lighter side, it did have Sebastion, who I enjoyed whenever he was on screen. I've since come to like all the things I listed. 'Les Poison' might be my favorite part in the movie now for it's black comedy. I would gleefully watch you do a Disney video marathon on all the films. You already got TLM and Icabod and Mr. Toad already done, 59 films left in the canon to go!

I hated Ariel through my childhood solely because my sister loved her and I grabbed onto literally any claims that Ariel was a bad character and any "criticism" that would justify my very stupid hatred of her. Now? I adore her, I see so much of myself in her. She's in love with so much that no one else around her understands and it kind of outcasts her. It would make sense that this kind of isolation would drive her away from her home, Eric just happened to be the point Ursula drove home in her manipulation. I'm very glad I outgrew my original viewpoints about The Little Mermaid, it's a charming story and there's so much to appreciate.

13:55 literally same. English is not my native language, so I watched a dubbed version as a child. Nonetheless it was pretty much directly translated. But even then, I never once thought that the things Ursula said should be taken as legit advice, AND, I also remembering thinking that men rarely take women seriously and see them as conceited or taking too much space if they talk too much, only viewing them as objects that should just sit there and look pretty. And growing up as a woman, I certainly have experienced that. I was made aware of issues like these when I was very young though, for better or for worse. My mom wanted to make me as prepared and aware as possible for ‘’the real world’’ so to speak, so I remember her talking me through these societal issues from when I was very young. Either way, I feel like it was a very… dumb decision to remove those lines in the remake. Ursula is supposed to be manipulative af, and I too do not like the implication that younger audiences won’t understand that.

She is the victim of emotional and physical abuse, no she cannot "just leave" WHERE WOULD SHE GO? THATS NOT HOW THAT WORKS! And she didn't wait for a prince to save her, she didn't even go to the ball for the Prince, she went because she wanted a night off and to wear a beautiful dress and have fun, SHE DIDNT EVEN KNOW SHE WAS DANCING WITH THE PRINCE UNTIL LATER 🤬 It bothers me because it's just bad media literacy and people agree because it's the popular opinion and the ✨ "feminist" ✨ opinion, and so to disagree with it makes you anti-feminist and misogynistic instead of ACTUALLY PAYING ATTENTION TO THE MOVIE AND ANALYZING THE TEXT AND TONE AAAAAA Ok 😩😤 I'm done lol. I think people calling this movie, and tbh a lot of other classic Disney movies miSogYnisTiC are either projecting their own issues, or have zero media comprehension skills. For one, Ariel sang Part of Your World BEFORE she met Eric, but even if it was after, the girl was 16; all she had was an innocent crush, and her father overeacted by destroying all the things she loved, and she justifiably, out of anger, went to go see Ursula after. Yes, it was stupid and reckless on her part, but you mean to tell me you were a perfect and mature person at 16 who would've made logical, sound decisions if someone were to go destroy everything you loved too? I loved the new live action film. They did a really good job at showing Ariel and Erics compatibility as explorers/adventurers. My only plot grip with the film was that there seems to be a sibling conflict between Triton and Ursula, which I couldn't figure out (like I wanna see that family tree). It would've made more sense if Ursula was the last of her kind, and her plot to overtake the Mercommunity was just revenge for a conflict her people had with Tritons people. I hope that with the live action, we get a part 2 because there were big questions around Eric and his origins as well ❤

Changing 'Kiss the Girl' was pointless. The whole point of the song is to convince Eric to kiss Ariel, but he is holding out for the mystery girl who rescued him not knowing she is sitting right there in front of him. Ariel NEEDS the kiss of true love to remain human or else she becomes a SLAVE/Property to Ursula by the end of the third sunset. After that Eric actually decides he's in love with Ariel and gives up on the mystery woman, symbolized by him throwing the flute he's been playing the song on into the ocean, before Ursula disguised as Vanessa enchants him with an appearance similar to Ariels and Ariels own voice. In 'Poor Unfortunate Souls' removing the last verse of the son is a big detriment to Ursulas character, she is #1 the villain so you shouldn't be taking what she said as truth and #2 she is really trying to convince Ariel that she DOESN'T NEED her voice to get Eric to fall in love with her to get the kiss. Ursula is a deal maker, at first she was playing the kind maternal and empathetic roll to lure Ariel in to the deal but then when the price for the spell came up and made Ariel start to have second thoughts Ursula had to really push it to sell the spell. Also it was important that Eric be the one to kill Ursula. Him steering the ship to impale the witch to defend the girl he loves is nessecary, Triton was powerless and useless forced to watch as Ursula was about to kill Ariel then seeing a human risk their life to save his daughter redeemed humans. 11 years prior to this Triton had to watch helplessly as human pirates murdered his wife, so seeing a human rescue his youngest daughter and the one who looks the most like his late wife is important.

The thing is, they are completely right about the kids not understanding the scheme and thinking Ursula was telling the truth. The other thing is, they made her lair and the fight so dark and scary, that, in a lot of countries, the film is outright banned from being screened to children of an age that would not comprehend Ursula's trick. Lol. Obv Germans for an example are extremely racist, but EVERY cinema and their websites have huge banners by now telling people that both The Little Mermaid (as well as Mario) are not to be watched by preschoolers, even under supervision. BY LAW. I myself witnessed an unaware lady with a group of children, two of which weren't old enough, being turned away at the box office. And the most infuriating part to me is, they could have seen it coming, bc Beauty and The Beast had the same issue, except the Beast is needed for the story, Ursula's skull filled darkroom isn't. (I am so sorry for the tangent!)

I just watched The Remake. The parts of Kiss the girl was not any changes, just a way to say it. Original "There is one way to ask her It don't take a word Not a single word Go on and kiss the girl" Remake" Use your words boy and ask her If the time is right And the time is tonight Go on and kiss the girl" I don´t understand the change there, but they did change Poor unfortunate soul becuse Ursula dose´t use contracts only dose her thing and well okay. I just think they simplefied Ursula so much and toke away TONS of her uniqeness and personalllity. If something I think she suffered the most in the remake. I really like Eric, I will defend him as a very nice and humble prince character. I don´t even see him as a prince, more like a rich kid. I actually like the pink dress, sure green would be wonderful but I do like the blue one. This movie got so many layers that I think people just want to look over and not consider. I will admit there was a certain critic several years ago that soured my thoughts on this movie, but my thoughts changed over the years (and so did hers, I believe). I think the queer allegory definitely helped me reappreciate it. Alan Menken has still made some great soundtracks, but I think his best stuff was definitely when he was teamed up with Howard Ashman. I don't know if it was ever discussed, but a part of me is curious if they were being considered for The Lion King's soundtrack... but as talented as they are, I don't know if they could beat what Tim Rice, Hans Zimmer, and Elton John created. Yeah but with “Emily Windsnap” there was no race swapping, because nobody in that series has a confirmed race to start with. In a way the incident with my fancast is even more racist than Ariel. Had the filmmakers of “The Little Mermaid” kept the deleted alternate ending, it would have given Ariel a much needed redemption arc, since Ariel’s apology in the deleted scene is a lot more *sincere* (only after she regains consciousness does she tearfully say to her father, *”Oh, Daddy. Daddy, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you...”):* kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHeTkH2BrrV2racm29s . According to the film’s audio commentary track, the alternate ending was cut because then-Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg had just seen the 1988 action film “Die Hard”, and he told “The Little Mermaid” directors John Musker and Ron Clements to make the ending *”more like ‘Die Hard’” (“Guys, guys, I want to see more ‘Die Hard’!”).* YES, REALLY! In other words, Katzenberg wanted to make the climax more epic, which explains why Ursula becomes gigantic in the final film. Damn you, Jeffrey Katzenberg! 😤 At least the Broadway version gave Ariel more agency in the climax as she kills Ursula by breaking Ursula’s conch shell into the ground, and Ariel’s apology to her father is a lot more genuine as she tells him *”I’ve caused you so much trouble. Can you ever forgive me?”:* kzbin.info/www/bejne/boqmfaivodF5aqMm40s Also, in the live action remake, Ariel feels actual remorse when she says to Triton, *”I’m sorry, father. This is all my fault”,* in response to Ursula telling Triton that she and Ariel made a deal.

I have a potential explanation for why Ariel didn't write anything down for Eric: merpeople have a different written language than humans do. Now of course, that begs the question, "then why do we CLEARLY see both Ariel and Triton write down their own names in English?" There's an explanation for that too: remember in the movie Pocahontas, how the Native Americans spoke English just so the audience could understand them without having to resort to subtitles? I figure it could be the same for the merpeople: their written language is presented as English so the audience can understand what they're supposed to be writing down. Anyway, that's my explanation.

I wouldn’t say Belle is perfect either, since she went inside the West Wing when she wasn’t supposed to; plus she felt terrible for outing the Beast to the angry mob, and for not coming earlier to the castle to save the Beast from Gaston. At least Belle genuinely admits to fault, whereas Ariel only apologized in the animated film because she got CAUGHT signing an unscrupulous contract (not for the unintentional harm that her actions caused towards others). Thankfully the live action remake of “The Little Mermaid” fixed this by having Ariel sincerely say “I’m sorry, father. This is all my fault” when Ursula shows Ariel’s bloody fish tail after making the deal with Ursula.

The more I hear people complain about other people the more I I wonder is That REALLY what certain people think? or am I acutely in a 3rd POV because no one has ever actually acknowledged with MY POV I feel like Im a 3rd thing and that applies to like ANY topic not just this one. I often have a 3rd side that's kind of both sides. and never all the way one side. The rest of the world seems to view things as Left and Right , A and B, right and wrong but Im always like "Why not both?" And that's not about you exactly its more about how this is the 100th time Ive been in the "None of the above" opinion of issues that have two sides. I can't even say a 3rd opinion because both sides want me to be on THERE side. Any how I would be very much in to wanting to see you review Disney movies. and not just the Princess films but also 20 000 leagues under the sea, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Parent Trap The Shaggy Dog, The Absentminded Professor, the Apple Dumpling Gang, Make Mine Music, the Non-Princess animations. The TV shows the cartoons, the shorts, non-Disney stuff 80s cartoons, 90s cartoons Rather then saying "Review every thing" if you give me a subject like "Representation" or "Cartoons abased on movies" or "Things that got remade" or "Historically set" then give me a number I will come back with a list of names set to that subject that are that number long . I already have some play lists for some topics. If you just want to read an existing list. but If you don't care for a conversation then simply put, yes, please do other things. I have not watched every video you have but the right combination of other things and I'll hit it up. I'll talk about it.

I know I am many videos behind on commenting but I been going through a bit and this is the chill vibe I needed. But what a hell of a video to come back on. I love your points and I don't see how this is MISOGYNISTIC. It seems like a fine movie and I growing up loved it and thought it really set itself apart from other movies at the time. And speaking as a trans Female that seems pretty right. Another AMAZING review Avery Keep up the fire work you straight up Girl Boss.

In re: 16:40 or thereabouts. I'll put it below the cut for anyone with a squick about anatomical talk. (But also I won't get too explicit.) I've said it before and I'll say it again. Merfolk have breasts. Breasts are for nursing your young. The only group that does that are mammals, and mammals do not breed like fish. Sure, they don't come up for air like dolphins or whales, but respiratory organs are one thing, and merfolk clearly have a mammal's reproductive system. Ergo, Ariel is not surprised by "the other part of human anatomy" she's just surprised that the sheath has been replaced by more hair. :P

To be fair, critiquing media that may or may not hold up by modern standards is important and anyone of any age bracket can have bad media literacy so I don't see it as a gen z specific problem.
@beethovensfidelio

It’s not a Gen Z thing. Even when “The Little Mermaid” came out in 1989, the movie was criticized by feminists, hence why Jeffrey Katzenberg hired Linda Woolverton to write the screenplay for “Beauty and the Beast”, since Jeffrey knew that Linda’s feminist sensibilities would make Belle less problematic than Ariel. Furthermore, when “Gone With The Wind” and “Song of the South” were released in theaters, they were protested by the NAACP for their racist portrayals of black people, so, again, criticizing racism and misogyny in the media is not a Gen Z thing.

I agree 110% I only am confused that they edited the 2023 due to pandering but seemingly accept pandering to race/gender/sex. If one isn't ok then the other isn't ok ... it was never about representation or exposing racist people but it did on all color spectrums. True representation showcases how amazing someone is bc of their talent and character... ones color or gender shouldn't be a factor otherwise that implies if one isn't that color or gender then theyre less than. Food for thought.

I mean I don't think for a second that Disney did it for altruistic purposes but I maintain that if you're white and see Ariel as less relatable because she's black or argue that her whiteness was central to the character than you have some work to do.

Again I think they casted Ariel well since I love Hallie's version of part of your world so no shade to her at all. Every Disney princess gets treated like they aren't already fully autonomous characters by these remakes and that bugs me a bit.

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff i dont enjoy when Disney or any creative takes the essence of a song or person and rips it out. On Ariels new design. I personally dont mind, but i do wish that they understand that to represent the black community so much better would be best to make a new character with their own personality and Lore. Dont change an already established character, as It does put a bad taste in ones mouth as what if it was reversed and tiana from princess in the frog was played as a person with little to no melanin within their complexion. Many people would riot and say it doesn't fit her character or the story. And thats not her identity. So it does make many rightfully so, a bit uncomfortable. Since its already been done we will have to tolerate the choices of disney as a company. But logically Disney isn't doing much good for themselves. To be honest they have had a fair share of terrible choices with what they have made the past few years. To be honest I wish they Titled the film as "The Little Mermaid -Reimagined" so we clearly can understand Its a Remake/Alternative Universe different from the original. Wich with then allow the new Ariel to have her own personality, character and Identity different from the original Ariel. So it wont feel to much like they are "stealing" the original Ariels role/Identity. If that makes sense. I understand the social definition "Race" topic is very touchy of a subject, but logically and Empathicly I see all as people and will give my opinions to help give a different perspective and possible logical solution for any issues. Via a healthy discussion.

I know you didn't outright praise him, but H.C. Andersen should not be celebrated for being bi or gay, his personal journals were published after his death which revealed he was a big time pedophile. Great video, keep up the good work.

1. I never considered Ursula having big Divine energy before, but now I totally “sea” it! Thankfully we don’t see her eat fish poop. 🐙 2. The live-action Disney remake is definitely worth a watch if you’re a fan of the cartoon, and it’s much better then the 2019 Live show. 3. Happy Pride Month from your fellow pansexual. 💙💛🩷🌈

How it is even that? Ariel makes all of her own decisions in the movie and really doesn’t listen to anyone. You may not like the fact that she wants to be with Eric and goes to extreme measures to do it but it is still HER DECISION. How is it misogynistic when you have a female character making her own decisions about her life?

Yeah Ariel's mom (and Ariel looks the most like her because visual shorthand) was hit by a ship. Also he banned music from the kingdom and Sebastian ran a music speakeasy even though he was the royal advisor. My only complaint about Halle Barry is that her hair isn't red.

Ariel's plan was to get the founder to get Erik's attention, where Ariel can talk to him because Eric loves mermaids. Ursula convinced Ariel to give up her voice for legs to get back at her dad by the way Ursula stocks The Little Mermaid by creeping on herUrsula sexually harassed Eric

15:03 no. Not everyone who criticizes her is racist. To me a race-swapping, apart from being inherently racist, must be justified because storyline (Miles Morales) or talent (the High evolutionary). Halle Bailey has the perfect voice... but she cannot act. She has the same expression all throughout the film and in the parts she does not speak is a torture. She does not have the talent to ignore a race swapping. At least to me. I am not being racist just because I say that an actress is not capable to do her job. Simply the lack of acting and the different aspect make you completely forget she should be Ariel...
