• Sesame Street - Episod...
Hey guys! Today I'm proud to be covering something that up until very recently was thought to be lost media. This is an episode of Sesame Street that aired in 1976 and guest starred Margaret Hamilton reprising her iconic role as The Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. It was pulled from air after parents complained that it was too scary for their kids and was thought to be lost until it was posted online just a couple of days ago. I hope you get the warm fuzzies like I did watching this because Sesame Street is lovely and honestly so was Margaret Hamilton as the witch. I think it's adorable that one of the most iconic movie villains was played by a woman who spent most of her life as a schoolteacher and fought for the education of children. I'm glad we can all see this episode now and appreciate her in the present day. :)
Thanks for watching! Stay safe and have a great day/night/unit of time. I'll see you in the next video...bye!

I think what caused the complaints wasn’t that the Wicked Witch was too scary in this episode, but rather the prospect of the witch returning. After all, one of the last lines in the episode was David saying something along the lines of, “I don’t want to do this all over again!” If I was a kid back then, I could see myself believing that the next episode of Sesame Street would show the Wicked Witch of the West return and do far worse things, including following through on her threat to turn Big Bird into a feather duster. I think that’s what other kids back then thought, and that’s why they were scared to watch Sesame Street again and cited their fear of the Witch as the reason. That more closely lines up with the complaints that the producers received after the episode first aired. That’s just my take, but I agree that the episode itself (bar the bread segment) wasn’t too scary at all!

That makes sense, although it would be interesting to see what a kid would make of this these days, I mean most who watched this after it was found were adults who were either looking for it or watched it as kids at the time (I mean kids were scared of the Wicked Witch from the actual film). It's actually more on the funny side then the scary side. I first learnt about this episode ages ago thanks to Blameitonjorge, for a while I thought the master tape was wiped since there probably wouldn't be any point keeping it since it will never get re-ran, however it turned out Sesame Workshop had it in there archives, that along with 4000 other episodes were donated to the Library of Congress in 2019, and someone must have gained access to it in order to post it online. This is an abridged version of events but it's worth looking into. Something else about the follow up test screenings was the children were fascinated by the witches green skin, which a lot of the ones viewing it at home probably never saw since a lot of people still had black and white TV sets.

I can see that being the main reason also. I, too, think kids could take the last line seriously back then.

Somehow I think Jim Henson's The Storyteller is a more "horror" themed show due to its anthology format. I know it frightened some kids, but I think Henson was ahead of his time with what he was making, & I certainly think you should give that show a spotlight on the channel. Brilliant video as always Avery!

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff The Storyteller is pretty interesting, it even had its own spin off Called The Storyteller: Greek Myths which had Michael Gambon as the storyteller which I thought was neat. I read somewhere that HBO had some association with the project, & HBO had been a knock out with horror anthologies in the late 80's until mid 2000's (the last great horror anthology I think they did was Masters of Horror which I also think is a great show).

So That was Jim Henson doing the voice of Guy Smiley and he also does the voice of Ernie at this time. As for you being an Adult just enjoying an episode of Sesame Street that is not as strange as you may think. Back in this time when Jim Henson and his company was more involved in the making of Sesame Street and working with the CTW they did stuff for basically everyone to enjoy. From Kids to Adults. I love this episode not just for the fact that it is a piece of lost media that has finally been found and it is just a delight for so many different reasons one of them being Margaret Hamilton looking like she is actually enjoying herself which makes this even more fun to watch. But We see a rare Roosevelt Franklin skit A character created by Matt Robinson who played the original Gordon on Sesame street. All we needed was an Appearance of Lefty The Salesman. I swear the behind the scenes info for this show is weirdly Interesting. Anyway Great Review Avery can't wait for the next one

This is actually one of the greatest things ever to resurface. The Wicked Witch of the West is one of the greatest movie villains of all time! If you can't tell witches are kinda my thing. All thanks to the Wicked Witch. Margaret Hamilton has played the Wicked Witch multiple times actually. I've seen clips of this episode before but I never expected this episode to be found. I've been impressed that even though she was in her mid to early 70s here Margaret Hamilton still was able to become the Wicked Witch with the voice and everything. The people over at Seasame Street definitely need to release this again but permanently in HD with a warning at the beginning of the episode just in case kids get scared again.

Not just A witch, she basically was, for all intents & purposes, prototype Elphaba (the _Wicked_ name for The Wicked Witch of the West; OZ revisionist author Gregory MacGuire made Elphie the tragic protagonist of his 1995 novel that begot the "pop-u-ler...lar" 2003 Broadway musical -- featuring pre-Elsa Idina Menzel in the titular role, opposite Kristen Chenoweth as Galinda aka the future Glinda the Good Witch, although the latter would probably prefer the term "sorceress" instead, even though "good witch" or "good fairy" are more commonly used synonyms -- and the anticipated forthcoming movie adaptation) years before _Wicked: The Life & Times of The Wicked Witch of the West_ was first written (it was written, as aforementioned, in 1995, so it's likely Gregory MacGuire was inspired by Margaret Hamilton's later appearances as her most iconic role, considering that he himself said he had Margaret Hamilton in mind when he put pen to paper) & also had Witchypoo from _H.R. Puffnstuff_ as her witch sister in-arms.

Bert & Ernie aren't gay. They're just roommates. Sure, they're based on classic comedy duos like Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy, Abbott & Costello, and -- indeed -- Felix & Oscar (not the grouch!) from _The Odd Couple_ screenplay & TV sitcom (despite the name, Felix & Oscar were both straight), but they're not gay, because they're just roomies (that, plus the fact that they're puppets, so they don't have anything below the waistline [photo stock puppets, plush dolls, miniature figures, PVC figurines, Funko Pops & walkaround character mascots notwithstanding]). They even have separate beds as shown quite often on the show. Both sets of performers who've done Bert & Ernie -- Frank *OZ* (heh) & Muppet creator Jim Henson & then, Eric Jacobson & Steve Whitmire (before he was excommunicated out of the Muppet's extended "family" at the behest of both the surviving Henson children & the [Walt] Disney Company) -- and the _Sesame Street_ producers themselves have each confirmed this (the fact that Bert & Ernie aren't gay) publicly.

As of writing this comment, I still have yet to look for the entire episode, so this is the most I’ve seen of it. They played reruns of Sesame Street from this era when I was a kid (obviously not this episode), so I grew up watching most, if not all, of these sketches. I’ll never forget the alphabet soup and the one where Ernie wants a glass of water! Edit: I have no specific memory of the loaf of bread! Maybe I got so frightened by that one, I blocked it out of my head! 😳

"People who play the villains seem to be really sweet in real life." That does seem to be the case. My theory is that the actors can give free rein to their dark side in their performances, where it doesn't hurt anyone, and purge it.
@AveryTalksAboutStuff
@AveryTalksAboutStuff Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting point. I also think too that playing a villain takes a more compassionate person because it requires trying to see good in them and so those parts naturally attract very compassionate people who are quite introspective.

I agree, this wasn't scary. Awesome review! I also love old Sesame Street shows too! There's just something about them that makes it nostalgically soothing in a way. So if the bread loaf was one sentient being but two sandwiches were made, do both sandwiches still have the same consciousness or do we have two seperate sandwiches with the same memories as the loaf of bread? If the other sandwich ingredients were also alive are they simply absorbed by the outer bread layers or do their minds fuse together? There's an interesting body horror movie in there somewhere.

As someone who watched Sesame Street during that era. I can see how some kids might have found the special effect when the witch tries to take her broom while someone else is holding it a bit scary. However, I don't think it was scary enough to be banned. As Avery Talks About Stuff mentioned, certain skits regularly shown on Sesame Street were much more traumatic. (Note: I was a little too young to see ithis episode when it first aired [had it aired a year later I probably would have watched it], so it is kind of neat to see it now..)
@AveryTalksAboutStuff
@AveryTalksAboutStuff 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I honestly find the bread skit worse than the witch but this is a show for little kids. Although instead of pulling it off air they really should have at most given a warning for parents of kids who weren't ready for it.
@documentmedic9385
@documentmedic9385 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that a disclaimer for younger children would have been a good idea. However, things were definitely different during the 70s. Shows that were not appropriate for children were not shown until after 9:00 PM, when most children would have gone to bed. They also did not differentiate between shows only appropriate for younger children versus those only appropriate for older children. When I was 4, I routinely watched cartoons that today are rated as being for older children (eg, Battle of the Planets and Tarzan Lord of the Jungle). If it was on television during a suitable hour, we got to see it unless our parents said otherwise. It would have been good for them to have figured out a rating system or decided to put disclaimers on shows sooner.
