I can sincerely imagine one of the kids in the cast potentially being gay and being so excited that they got to perform in a version of Hamilton (considering how important Broadway and theater is to LGBTQ+ recognition). Then they would only have their hopes dashed when they heard their pastor hurl homophobic vitriol at the end. And then to rub salt into the wound they would be mocked and derided online. I have been actively avoiding Scamilton for a while now because I extensively covered Hamilton for 2 semesters in college but the part with Its Quiet Uptown is actually infuriating. I wanted to write one of my main essays about It's Quiet Uptown, but the Hamilton bible, as my class referred to it (the annotated book from Lin), had almost no notes in it because of the severity of events associated with the song. I cannot imagine being Lin and seeing what happened there. The song was deeply important for the original members of Hamilton, as two of the ensemble members had their child die right before they started rehearsing that song. Lin actually sent the demo of the song to them and offered to cut it if it was too much. Apparently the song was incredibly impactful and helped the two move through their grief and recover from the loss of their child. Having any part of the show, but especially that part be chopped into religious messaging is painful to hear, especially with the context of the song's creation.

As someone who was in an illegal production of a show as a kid, I imagine most of these kids didn't realize that this type of production is illegal. (I.e. licensing is not out for Hamilton, nor are directors allowed to make such cuts to a show regardless.) I imagine they were all super excited to do this show, especially when the adults around them said the Hamilton team gave them such special permission to do so. But, as someone who has had their own work on stage and seen it get torn apart without even discussing it with me.... It's frustrating. There's a lack of care for the art itself. Will this directly and financially impact LMM? No. Would it have impacted any other smaller and upcoming playwright? Yes. There's a reason why every performance of Lion King, of Jersey Boys, of Noises Off, and of 9 to 5 starts and ends the same way. You're not allowed to add to that. You're not allowed to change the script without express permission. When you change the show, you're telling the people watching it that, "Hey, this is exactly how the playwright wrote this and they were okay with it." I would be furious if I, a bi/ace writer, took my work, added homophobic language to the show, and then told everyone that "Hey, it's what the playwright wrote." I'd be absolutely infuriated. There's no way you're putting my name on that. And I see people saying copyright shouldn't exist. When, in reality, it protects this from happening. It protects smaller artists like me from having this happen. This entire situation frustrates me as both a performer and a writer. The people in charge HAD to know that this was not legal in the slightest. The promotional material I saw had no mention of where they got the supposed licensing from. No mention of LMM as a writer. Nada. It was never a legal production. I feel so bad for the people involved that just wanted to perform. That didn't know they were taking part in something illegal. They just wanted to perform.

No joke I saw someone defending the church in the comments of another video about Scamilton. Saying they didn’t do anything wrong and it wasn’t copyright infringement because they changed lyrics, added stuff, and removed songs/parts of songs and compared it to a cover saying it should fall under fair use. Like okay tell me you don’t think IP should be protected without telling me I guess. I know of one Hamilton parody and it is very clearly a parody. There’s no way you’d confuse the two. When, in the case of Scamilton, someone who is a fan of Hamilton could walk into it thinking they’re going to get to see it without having to go to Broadway…only to find out that it’s a cheap rip-off. I’d have walked out long before the intermission.

This makes me so mad for so many reasons. As you said, it's fucked up that they took this musical that broke boundaries for the stage in terms of inclusivity/diversity. So, to basically shit in the face of that is just disgusting. Also, coming from a theatre background, it pisses me off that they stole intellectual property and messed with it. A piece of art is made a specific way for a reason because it's how the artist envisioned it. When you change it without permission, you're defiling their vision. I dealt with this shit at every theatre I've worked at because they were in predominantly christian areas. If you can't do the show as it was written, then just don't do it. Obviously, no hate to the actors here. They seem like they just loved the performing arts and wanted to share their passion with their community. On the other hand, how dare the high ups in the church both steal intellectual property and then lied about stealing it, then proceeded to make the show about following Christian values when they just ignored two of the 10 commandments One last thing, my blood BOILED at the pastor saying people struggle with homosexuality. The only reason I struggled with being gay was because so many Christians taught me that I was disgusting. They don't realize I cried so goddamn many nights praying to be "normal". Finally coming to terms with being gay was the BIGGEST relief and one of the HAPPIEST moment in my life. For the first time in years I felt good about myself. This makes me so upset. Tbh, I hope they get sued and the money goes towards helping the LGBTQ+ community Sorry for my rant

What I hate about It is that Hamilton can have a "Christian" message if you squint, you have a commited wife that is until the very end with her man, Hamilton I am pretty sure was a Christian and the story treats cheating as the horrible thing that is, there is no explicit homosexual content, so if they are homophobic they didn't even have to mention it. What I hate about Christian content, is the necesity to have everything to be preachy and in your face, as if people being good and kind wasn't enough to have Christian values and messaging. I am not religious and I don't Support what they did But what really insults me is people that don't respect my intelligence as a member of the audience.

It's true, Hamilton had a bit of a complicated history with the church but there's definitely references to Christian values and imagery and the pastor could just have given a sermon at the end about that. @@AveryTalksAboutStuff I will say, you've done a good job covering their churches, more so than anyone else I've seen. Most people just stop at the musical stuff, which is the tip of the iceberg. I'll give some more context, But let me know if you have any questions I can answer. I need to let someone know what they've stumbled across, lol. The church that performed this is one part of the congregation with churches all over the world, even in places where they would be illegal, like China or Russia, though they are most present in America. Every year, some of the bigger churches have a conference in which people from all over the world congregate to have sermons preached at them. During these conferences, the musicals are performed for the children while the adults sit in the "adult service" listening to sermons. On the last day of conference, the play or musical is performed for the rest of the church. I can confirm that every single one of these larger churches that have these conferences perform these plays. I've helped write, build sets in, and act in these plays, though for the longest time we never streamed them, so no one really knew. This church has had a very troubled history, and I can go in more in depth if you would like, but that just about covers the context for the musicals and plays people are discovering.

A small semirelated note, if I may: Animatics aren't "incomplete". They're literally meant to be animated storyboarding keyframes _for_ animators to then use when they draw sequences. It would be like calling a movie script scene incomplete because it's the dialogue and set directions and not the filmed scene. There's plenty of times where _because_ animatics are basically animation storyboards they have to use more exaggerated expressions and motions and medium instructions, which tends to highlight things a LOT better and less subtly than a final animation. (Sorry for the soapboxing, Disney/Pixar making-of VHS extras kid here who is sad that so many people discount the value and completeness of animatics because most people think it's a rough draft of the final animation instead of its own full process.)

After watching this video and one other video about this play, I’ve realised that they probably cut 80% of Angelica’s stuff and did her dirty like that because they didn’t like the implications that Alexander and Angelica were still in love with each other even though they married separate people, and since this seems to be a more conservative-leaning church (not to mention Hammy boy is the main character and it’d be much harder to cut him out lmao) they probably decided to just blame that all on Angelica for being a devious temptress or something and yeeted her from the play
@AveryTalksAboutStuff

It totally could be, but honestly I still have questions for them if that was the reason. 1) the whole point they want to make is that Hamilton needs God so even if I agreed with what they did I'd wonder if dwelling on his "sins" wouldn't serve a narrative purpose and 2) there are other things kept in that are even more suggestive than what was cut so I have overall questions on what kind of criteria outlined those decisions overall. Months later and I'm still confused. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. ☺️

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff there are two types of protagonists in Christian media: either the one who's an absolute paragon who can't sin because "he'll look bad", or the one who's so flawed he's straight-up unlikable. Obviously because Hamilton is the titular character and he's portrayed as "the good guy" in the musical, the pastor of Scamilton's church figured he was the former and not the latter. This meant they leveled out his flaws and made him the "good guy who doesn't need God and thinks he can totally rely on himself but also has to be a paragon to the children and thus he can't commit adultery", thus removing any form of climax and making the whole thing the story of a guy who does good, does one bad thing, and then God and literally everyone else in his neighborhood disses on him for that one time, for some reason, even though part of God's principle is the fact that He loves us and will stick by us even if we mess up a hundred times. Most of these churches who diss on children for committing one sin and say "you'll go to hell for doing x and y" are being hypocritical because they themselves are flawed and know that they've committed sins in the past. Does this mean that *they* will also go to hell, even for one tiny little mistake? Come on. Wasn't the point of salvation the fact that we're all flawed, but God is willing to give us a chance? I dunno where this "holier than thou" perfectionist attitude came from but good lord. It's infuriating to watch.

My school had a policy that said if you didn’t have a signed form, you had to learn about Christianity. This was a public school and it started in year 1. My parents weren’t religious but wanted me to learn and choose for myself. The first lesson and the preacher immediately told us if we didn’t believe and repent, we’d burn in hell. It terrified me as a kid so I became a Christian. A year later something traumatic happened to me and I felt like it was god punishing me for something. It really messed me up. At 11 I stopped believing in god. As an adult, it makes me so angry when people try to push their religion onto others through fear, even more so when they do it to kids. Me and so many others are living proof that it is so damaging to people. The adults in this knew what they were doing but don’t care

I would have been almost okay with it if all they did was cut out the cursing (I get, you can't curse in church), but changing the whole message of the play and adding completely fabricated lines, and even adding a whole scene, just seems like a smack on the face to the man who spent years of his life creating this. How would this pastor feel if someone took his sermons that he worked probably days on, and changed the message, but pretty much had the same thing? Its like they are bastardizing someone's art, and message. I also agree the kids shouldn't be punished for this, they go to church, and that's alright, and they get to do something fun, and most of them probably love acting, and Jesus, so it wouldn't seem like anything was wrong.
@AveryTalksAboutStuff

Agree with all of this...if Lin Manuel Miranda took one of his sermons he would probably be furious but he gets to steal and lie. It's no more their fault than the kids who are in bad movies we cover.

This was a really well made video. I grew up Christian and I can defiantly relate to having Religious Trauma. Especially one Youth Pastor I had who found out I was smoking Cigarettes' at one time (I don't do this anymore) And he gave me I believe his office number if I ever needed to talk to help get me off of them. Or if I needed religious help. Anyway I remember trying to call him and he was always busy which was fine. I would leave messages asking if he can call me back. I left my number and it did not happen. But I have a memory of other people who would go up to him when we met for youth group saying that they are happy he helped them. Glad they got to talk to him. And if I confronted him about why he did not get back to me (I was nice of course) he would just say he was busy and was sorry he did not get back to me but he would when can. This went on for a good amount of months and I was like I get the hint I am not on the top of your list or on it at all. He was a nice guy but It's like I did not figure out why he said he wanted to help but I just get shoved to the side when I tried to reach out but others (Not everyone but most people) He was willing to help but some of us just got shoved off. That's just one of the things that got me to leave the Christian religion. I know not much of a traumatic experience (There's more but the more extreme ones mainly happened where I used to live at the time) But it did make me think...This is someone who is always saying how much he is a person of the faith but makes false promises of helping people. Maybe there is something going on I did not know about but still just be up front and tell me and others why you changed your mind on us. I feel bad for the kids in this play. The adults know what they are doing (I am sure some might not but most do) These kids just trying to do what they feel is right but the adults know what's up. This play is a mess. Yes there are talented people especially the ones trying to pull off some of the harder parts of certain songs. There is obviously real work that went into it especially with a smaller budget. I just do not agree with the bigotry especially with the sermon at the end. Just ugh no just no I do not agree with anything like that. People are free to believe in what they want I just don't like the hate that comes in a lot. Religious Wars will sadly always be a thing. There will always be those that will talk badly about anyone lgbtq+ But we just gotta show those that will listen that Just because you belong to a certain said religion or whatever that other beliefs are not bad just because they are not in the same place as yours is. And I know there are some good non judgmental Religious people out there. Shout out to those people the cool ones. This review was amazing and is one of my favorites now. I can tell this was not easy for you to make but you did so good with it Avery. Keep it up.

Thank you so much Tilly...for the kind words and also for sharing your story. I can relate to the feeling of being on the outside of the community a bit when it comes to church. To be fair in my case I was a strange kid who fit in nowhere and my youth pastor did try and is a really nice dude who I have a lot of respect for to this day. My situation was more the other kids were just as cliquey as everywhere else and it didn't help my already prevalent anxiety disorder. Just because something isn't the most insane story ever doesn't mean that it wasn't traumatic or that your feelings aren't valid. I got to a point where I realized that no one seemed any happier in church than anywhere else and I just felt more miserable than ever around that crowd. And sure there's a lot more messed up stuff and things that are more specific but when I think back the first memory is just being unhappy. I just refuse to be part of any group that isn't actively opposed to all forms of bigotry and so I decided to distance myself and I honestly am glad I did. 💛

A POC has racial issues in their life not because of their own actions or the way they live but just because they are alive and that is enough for society to snub them. Let me just say as deeply spiritual and religious the part that annoys me the most annoying is that these Evangelical have this money and don't use it to do something original ( or help the less fortunate). Like the Nativity for example. I feel bad for these kids and I really hope they use there faith to do actual good in this world. The adults really let them down and I too hope this Church gets sued.

16:30 I grew up Catholic and went to a Catholic school for ten years. So I was pretty much absorbed in religious content for a decade. I think what else could be said is that, with religious media, the religious message takes priority and the story is secondary. A lot of rip offs I've seen just use the infringed upon material as a story because that's not what matters, the message is what matters. I think a good example of this is a rip off of Finding Nemo called Finding Jesus. Do I think there's religious content that can have both a good message and story? Yes. Veggie Tales I think is honestly the best religious media. It comes up with original stories and also has a way to relay a religious message without being preachy. But a lot of religious media I've seen lately just rip off well known stuff. And it's frustrating. The story doesn't matter. They just want to send a message. And it doesn't matter if that message costs some artist to lose money. For the love of God, please just respect your artists out there. It's so easy for this stuff to happen and smaller artists don't have the ability to call it out for stealing.
@AveryTalksAboutStuff
@AveryTalksAboutStuff Жыл бұрын
Yep, I always think of veggie tales when trying to think of religious media that's actually good and I still like it to this day because it's funny and well made. But for every veggie tales there's a Bible Man you know?

There's this really weird obsession that Christian media seems to have with being as subtle as a sledgehammer. Like, Hamilton itself can definitely be viewed through a Christian lens. I mean one of Eliza's lines in the final number (which Scamilton quoted verbatim) is "The Lord in His kindness, He grants me what you always wanted/ He gives me more time." And "Dear Theodosia" is very sympatico with Christian values- which is why it's so weird that this church cut it entirely.

1:20:40 on the Washington slavery point. In the original production Washington bows his head and walks back in shame as Eliza says that line - dead Washington recognising the evils of it all (sort of lines up with the history of him leaving instructions to emancipate his enslaved people in his will). In the show the line would've also made sense if the Cabinet Battle #3 (which dealt with the Washington administration's slavery policies) made it to the final version of the show. Because of the camerawork we don't know whether this production had that minor detail, but I'd hazard a guess at no.

I'm pretty sure that they left off the scene where Hamilton and Eliza find out about the death of Laurens because they pulled all the backing tracks from the official "Hamilton instrumentals" soundtrack release (the music sans voices, for, I dunno, karaoke purposes) and the music for that scene wasn't included just like in the regular soundtrack.

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff It's open to personal interpretation; ultimately, there is no actual definitive right or wrong answer. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Thomas Kail (the original director) have always been very open about the fact that they basically wanted to leave it up to everyone who plays Eliza to come up with her own reason for the gasp, and that it's also up to each person in the audience to interpret the ending how they want. Whenever Lin's been asked about the ending to the show and what it means, all he's said is that he thinks it's a moment that transcends time in some way and that he personally *doesn't* agree with the "it's Lin playing himself" interpretation (as he's pointed out that it only works with the relatively few performances that specifically had him play Alexander) but he appreciates it as a theory.

I will defend 1 change: "southern.... democratic republicans" this change still works, as Jefferson is scanning Bur in this silence. As Bur is the very obvious odd-one-out here (both for the southern part AND the democratic republican part), this helps in some way to draw attention to the fact that Bur made such a radical flip just to get into a position of power.

I agree with all your points about this particular version of the show. Just to clarify something about the early US political system though: each delegate actually had two votes, for two different candidates. So usually each party would run two candidates, one for president and one for vice president. Then, the delegates would all vote for the presidential candidate and either one or two wouldn’t vote for the VP candidate, or they would all vote for both and the VP would step down from the running. What happened in 1800 is that Burr was running as Jefferson’s vp, but refused to step down with the hopes that the federalist house would choose him over Jefferson. It didn’t work out.
