Catching an edge is the worst! Scraped my knees the first time. Bruised my tailbone the second time. Learned my lesson and the third time showed up with butt pads, knees pads, wrist braces, shoulder pads, elbow pads, back pads, and of course helmet. All in a sudden I was the coolest kid on the mountain. I’d be human canon-balling down the slope after falling and roll myself into a big snowball and standup at the bottom of the hill, dust off, and hop back on the lift. Board or skis are totally optional at this point and just for style 👍🤘

East/Ice Coast rider here...I came FLYING down a run yesterday, in freezing rain that was coating the run in a sheet of ice, caught a heel edge, ragdolled and slammed my left shoulder into the hardpack which jerked my neck WAY too far left, and did a literal backflip in the air and somehow landed upright on my board again. My shoulder and neck are pretty sore but it could have ended up far worse...I was very lucky.

One very common way to catch an edge, even if you're not a beginner is when you're in catwalks and flat parts in general. When speed is high, it's easy to adjust. In flat parts, if you don't fully lean forward and don't use your edges, it's easy to catch an edge and fall... same for button lifts or T-bars..

Same: my worst edge catch was on a flat run out. But I was going fast (but inexperienced) , board started to wander to the left, caught my front edge, and did a huge splat under a chair lift. Took my breath away, board smacked me on my back, and I just had to lay there while people above are like “You ok???” Eventuall gave them a thumbs up. Still hurts to think about it, 20yrs ago, lol!

Dude I know you get this all the time, but you give off the best fricken vibes in your content, I absolutely love how much fun you have on your board and how smooth you make it look, when you look at the average boarder or even some of the best, with how easy you make it look and how creative you are with playing around its inspiring to be even a quarter of your skill, keep it up man we all appreciate you so much.

I caught a heal side edge at the top take off ramp of a giant table top at speed for a back flip. landed on my tailbone and ended my pro snowboarding career in 1997 just as I was about to start riding with Burton. 27 years later I'm now just getting back into Snowboarding. That event had spun me into many years of depression. I feel like I'm ready to Live Again.

MY edge catches are usually lack of concentration. One of my painful slams was riding on my heel edge. Had a bud catching up from behind. He yelled my name and I rotated my body to the right to look back up hill. When my shoulders rotated, I guess my hips did to and BOOM. total face slam. Learned when on heel edge, only look uphill over my left shoulder and vice versa for my toe edge.
@hihokie
@hihokie 2 жыл бұрын
Looking back has nothing to do with it. Dropping the clearance of the edge above the snow to make contact with the snow is what caused it. Not learning how to look back isn't exactly safe riding. Just keep concentration on having enough edge clearance while looking around.

I really like this video breakdown of just where one catches an edge and drills to help you avoid these catches. Love the drills. I can ride steeper runs and few bumps. BUT, for some reason, I can't keep my self from falling/catching an edge once in a while on the catwalks, the green runs that are flat or just any flat area. I'm baffled by this. The only way I can do these flat areas is by riding switch. It's weird. I would love to hear what you have to say to help us folks not catch an edge on the flats.
@teemuhamalainen7059
@teemuhamalainen7059 2 жыл бұрын
On flat area there is less room between the slope and the board, se the edge of the board ”bites” the slope easier. In steep slope you have more room to move your board before catching an edge.

@@teemuhamalainen7059 Thank you for taking the time to explain to me the mechanical reason why I bite the dust on the flats. A blogger showed this physically on their blog. Guess I was wondering why after all these years I still catch that edge on flats? AND mainly asking what riding techniques I can used to at least decrease the chances of me dong the slam especially on my heel side edge?
