The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

@@cadengushlaw9358 Respect is part of the problem. It has been a constant war between old heads and young cats since the 1970s! (Even in Socrates era, the same old war occured) Old heads has a disdain about modern athletes... and modern people disrespect older athletes. The sad truth is : the game of basketball (life in general) isn't getting better or worse. It's changing.

You are so right, and actually MJ has an astounding amount of respect for Jerry West. Did you see the recent top 75 ceremony, there is one guy that stood out about getting some love from MJ, it was Jerry West. They are good friends in real life and have been since MJ played for NC. MJ modeled his perfect fade away jumper after jerry west. Also, MJ strived to become a defensive monster just like jerry west. West was my favorite player growing up and his pull up jumper was so quick it was basically unstoppable. At 6'5" and athletic, West could score in the paint, on the break, and especially with his pull up jumper like nobody else in history. @@klicknkreate7077 I always find it crazy how he scored so many points while being a playmaker and defending so well in an era where the rules heavily favored centers He did all that without a 3 point line and barely being allowed to dribble, players were also allowed to stand in the paint for as long as they wanted which Im only guessing made it more difficult for him to drive If he played in today’s era I think his game translates better than that of Bill Russell or Wilt Chamberlain, since guards now have more flexibility and centers have less

I think it was partly because he and Kobe were both shooting guards he got knocked out. But, then they did put LeBron and Davis as their forwards, which is an even bigger insult to Baylor and Worthy. In any case my laker 5 Kareem at C, Baylor and Worthy at the forwards, Bryant/West at the 2, Magic point guard. Loser at the 2, becomes the 6th man. (Heck, i might make Worthy the 6th man, and move Magic into a point forward spot or something, with Bryant and West dual guards.

One more thing I want to point out. I don't remember if you mentioned this in How Good Was Jerry West Actually, but for all these Gen Z clowns saying the 60s were not athletic, Jerry West was able to touch the top of the backboard square. That's 16 inches above the rim. I also love your content, but I think what does need to be emphasized because I've gotten sick to my stomach explaining this and people not listening, I know you are aware of this, that carrying rules were much stricter back then and that's why they didn't dribble so fancy like we see now. We saw Bob Cousy be the Houdini of the Hardwood even with those rules and you know what, he deserves a video too since he's 94! Walt "Clyde" Frazier is 77, he's criminally underrated, I want him getting his flowers before he's gone too. Great job on this video though from one Lakers fan to another.

Jerry West is the 60s era equivalent of a player like James Harden. Elite scorer and shooter and can play both guard positions exceptionally, the biggest difference is that Jerry West was also great defensively not just offensively. Jerry West was about 6’4 and an underrated athlete, he could easily score 30 and dish out 10 assists, like a prime Harden. Jerry West and Big O were the 2 premier guards of their era. It was a different game and a different time. Give the great old school players todays advantages and they would still be great. People who shit on the old eras don’t understand evolution. Players like Jerry West paved the way. For example, if you don’t have an Elgin Baylor, there’s no Dr. J, which mean there’s no Jordan Or Kobe, in the form that we know and love. No model T means no Ferrari. Also Jerry West’s real name is Jerome lol.

Thank you for this video, I'm 44 years old so never saw West play, but I have a great respect and appreciation for NBA history. It's sad to see so much disrespect that legends of the past routinely receive on twitter and KZbin. After Bill Russell passed, most comments I saw were "he wasn't that good! He played in a weak league with no competition. He wouldn't even be a benchwarmer today." How can people say that about 5-time MVP and 11-time champion? West is totally dismissed as are players like Oscar and Wilt, not to mention Cousey and Mikan. Modern fans and media are so dismissive of the past; but its beyond that; there is a kind of contempt of the past, like a disgust and repulsion. "Wilt wasn't any good! How dare you even mention Oscar in the same breath as Westbrook!" it's bizarre. There should be a reverence of and respect for the players who built this league into what it is. The LA Lakers were built on the backs of Elgin and West, and nowadays they're punchlines. Sad, they deserve so much more.

Outstanding video!!!! And every point you made is spot on!!!!! It angers me how much the absolute greatness of both Jerry West and Elgin Baylor has been ignored. These were not only the two men ( along with the late Chick Hearn) who made the Lakers relevant in Southern California in the first place, but they were both transcendent and iconic players who are both still among the greatest of the NBA's all-time greats. And let's not forget Jerry's contributions as an executive to both the Memphis Grizzlies and the Golden State Warriors. Frankly, where Jerry West goes, winning follows. He's deserving of the highest levels of admiration and respect possible while he's still alive to enjoy the well-deserved honors.

You made a *great* case. Everything you said is true, and you could have even added that he elevated not only the Lakers, but the NBA - for instance, his work for Memphis Grizzlies, and the Golden State Warriors (you already mentioned the Clippers). Thanks, Jonny...

Great video! Once again, when West (inevitably) dies, some people will go back to arguing he's top 10 all-time, rediscover his heroics, his stats despite having no 3-point line, no steals, no blocks, and so on. Jerry West and Elgin Baylor are definitely some of the 5 most important Los Angeles Lakers of all-time (alongside Magic, Kareem, Kobe; Shaq is 6th) and West is still one of the 5 best guards ever (with Jordan, Magic, Kobe, Curry), he's not going to get outranked anytime soon. He's one of the best basketball minds ever, succeeding in different aspects of the game. He also seems to have the respect and admiration of his peers and to be a great mentor for some of the generations that followed him, without holding grudges or judging badly the next decades as some "old heads" do ("'they're too soft!", "back in my days, these were called" and so on). So it's very unfair that this happens to him.

I am glad that you did this video. I feel like a there's a lot of disrespect to players who played in the 50s, 60s, 70s and in some cases, the 80s and 90s. I won't lie, I have agreed with the case of plumbers, firemen and mailmen but only in the terms of older players having a 2nd job during the offseason. At the same time too, I would never say that in a way to joke around or anything like that, If I ever say it, it's because of fact for those players working jobs during the offseason. Another thing is that I never realized how much disrespect Jerry West has received. I think that list Jeanie had was horrible. LeBron in no way should be on that list for the fact that there are way many players who played on the Lakers that were way more important for them with the likes of Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. Had it not been for Elgin when they were still in Minneapolis, they could have been folded and defunct and Jerry did a lot more for the Lakers than I ever thought. It actually surprising that most people don't realize how important Jerry West is to the Lakers, like Chick Hearn. One last thing in this. A lot of players back in earlier eras did a lot for the sport to make sure that future generations could get the riches that they are getting today. I think they deserve the respect that they should be receiving if they don't get it already. I hate seeing younger fans disrespect older eras in an argument to compliment today's players. If it's in a fair comparison, that's fine. Talking about competition of Jordan or Magic and Bird as plumbers and mailmen is not necessary and such a terrible way to bring down the greatness of other eras of NBA basketball entirely. I think more awareness like this and calling it out is warranted.

In terms of the logo, I think the NBA is a sufficiently well known brand that they can make many logos commemorating the leagues greatest players. For instance create a different logo for each of the top 82 players and use that for each game. Or have a team specific logo or set of logos and circulate them when those teams play.

I’m not a Lakers fan, but Jerry West’s impact on the league as a player, and executive is well-documented and should be respected. It isn’t surprising, but it is appalling that the NBA has hoarded money from him and his family members as the NBA logo for so long. His impact spans decades of influence for the future of the NBA. Thank you Jerry West for your passion, love, and devotion to the game of basketball for all of these years.

Let's just accept this. The NBA is a league whose fans constantly and I mean constantly debate player rankings and comparisons. Normally this would not be too bad, but most of those rankings, whether by the media favor recent performers heavy. Like, just win a playoff series and you're better than the player you were compared to, doesn't matter is you just squeaked by, or he had a worse cast, you were just better. This means recent players will dominate most older ones in rankings etc. So let's just accept it, the legends we love today will not be as appreciated 10, 20 years from now. Let alone 50

A generation raised in the environment we live in is taught not to respect its elder because the next model is always an improvement on the older one, or so we're taught. Look at how LeBron, who is a representative of that, called himself the greatest of all time. There are many legends of the NBA whose achievements and skill have been undermined to make it look like the product is better. A lot of these players are made into idols which is bad for the game and leads to dumb narratives and overrating of many of them including the superstars. Jerry West, along with Bird and Russell are probably the only guys to excel in all departments they've been put in the NBA but they get disrespected even though they built the league in a sense. In today's world comparing Kobe or LeBron to West, Havlicek or Robertson is considered blasphemy. Unless you're well researched on the NBA and you know your history, you won't give the past generation it's props. And the league will wait until he's gone just like a lot of people and then forget about him in like 20 years with simple reminders here and there.
