Just a recommendation on terminology. Not dogging on you. This was a great video. Drive by “WIRE” means an Electronic Wire. No mechanical connection between the throttle body butterfly opening and the gas pedal. I don’t like it but it’s the “modern way in 90+% of new cars and trucks. The mechanical throttle body connection, with a return spring, that I prefer....even though it’s connected to the gas pedal with an actual wire, is NOT drive by wire. It how most cars worked through the 1980s that had carburetors or TBI. For safety, 2 springs should be used. Especially in modified high HP cars. God forbid the spring breaks. I’ve had it happen several times. Be quick on the ignition off switch or watch the engine grenade in your face. Virtually all modern cars, post mid 1990s, have true “drive by electronic wire” throttles. The pedal in the car has a gear connected to an electronic potentiometer (like the volume control on a stereo amp) that “interprets” what you want the engine to do. This goes through computer software and adjusts to your driving habits and conditions over time. If you drive your grandma’s car you will have to mash it to the floor to get a decent engine response. If you get on it for awhile it will launch you quickly. That is drive by “Electronic” wire. I hope this helps. No disrespect intended at all. Cheers. MM

I own a '98 MGM w/the standard 4.6l V8 and the 4R70W overdrive 4 speed electronic automatic transmission. I have had a K&N racing filter in my car since around 2010 (approx 100,000 miles). I chose to just get the replacement filter to keep the underhood aesthetics as stock and simple as possible. Did not like paying the $55 for an air filter at the time but did so anyways. It was most definitely worth it. I check filter every month or so and clean/charge w/new oil about every nine months depending on how many miles I have driven. The difference in performance and mileage were impressive and it seemed like it had more power. I must admit...I also had true dual exhaust installed around the same time. Last summer, I wanted to see if engine would breath even better by increasing air intake. AGAIN, wanting to keep it looking original as possible...I removed bottom half of airbox below air filter. I took a sawsall and trimmed all unnecessary plastic from the housing except edges and bolt holes...leaving underneath exposed for greater air circulation. The factory air intake was just a little air horn up behind driver's headlamp. This made an even bigger increase in hp and idlespeed....haven't noticed a lot of difference in gas mileage....but car runs great and is comming up on 200,000 miles in next month. Love these cars...Simple, but durable and easy to work on and modify.

Hello, "Mr Random": First, I want to "Thank You" for all you do, I like to watch some of your videos & wish you the best. OK, pal, according to the FORD Owner's Manual, pg 81, [under "Powertrain malfunction"] the "wrench" light comes on when the car has a DRIVE TRAIN/TRANSMISSION problem. Here's the quote; "POWERTRAIN MALFUNCTION. Displayed when the powertrain is not operating properly. If the warning stays on or continues to come on, contact your authorized dealer as soon as possible." Now I just had my trans rebuilt [2008 P71] earlier this year & the "wrench" light was on before the trans rebuild--since the rebuild, the light has been OFF since. That said, I don't know much about the "ETC" or "Electronic Throttle Control". BUT! I was a mechanic for 'bout 20 years before & after "Electronic Engine Management" systems became common. "*IF*" you alter the air flow into the engine significantly the computer can NOT compensate for the change, & that could cause the problem. And the "powertrain" includes the engine which makes the "power". MAIN POINT The engine must have a way to measure the airflow. Usually, that's a "Mass Airflow Sensor". [On Ford P71s.] Anything that disrupts or disturbs that measure more than a "little" is going to cause a problem for the Electronic Engine Management system. Unless the engine is ruined you can probably restore or replace the electronic components to fix it. You should find an independent mechanic w/ a serious mid- to high-level scan tool to check out the EEM system; that'll tell you a lot more about the car's condition. It may only need just a mass airflow sensor. Again, wish you the best, & maybe you're the 'lucky' type & you can fix it--just don't give up until it's really dead. Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

This is true…BUT!! There is a Ram air intake kit for about $60 bucks on eBay that only replaces your stock intake box and attaches to your OEM intake tube. Makes a BIG difference in power without throwing the wrench light, just have to use your original MAF which is best. I tried plugging in a new one on mines and it threw the wrench light immediately. Original MAF is correctly tuned with your car. However I’d recommend buying a heat shield and reflective tape to reduce the heat from the engine with this set up. K&N kits are junk, overrated, and expensive. There’s the Afe Magnum which fits these cars, but spending $350-400 on a whole intake system vs $90-100 tops for what you need is a no-brainer.

@roundsm184 жыл бұрын
Adam Detre generally speaking “clatter” isn’t a diagnostic term. So is it your timing chain? Idk, what’s the service interval on the chain and how many miles have you got? How many hours has it run? I do mine every 120,000... and with it I tend to replace the oil pump (cause you’re already there). Motorcraft parts? Why? I reference all the idiots blowing up their engines using aftermarket “upgraded” parts. Ask the fleet guy who has to make the thing hit 500,000 miles what works best, not some idiot whose only platform is eBay with no long term results. Is it compression leaking around your spark plugs? Could be... that’s a common Ford modular engine family problem. Nobody fixes it until the plug blows out and hits the hood. Then once again, blame the Ford engineer. Did you spin a bearing? Idk you’re just chasing “clatter”. Make a video, a lot of us fleet nuts hang out on here. And for the love of god please change your lube oil pump if you do a timing set it’s way too easy to just do than to regret when you have a complete rotating assembly lubrication failure.

Your "cold start clatter" is most likely caused by a failed "Anti-Drainback Valve" in the oil filter. I cured the problem by changing to a BOSCH # 3410 Premium Oil Filter, 5-W-30 Full Synthetic Oil, and a 5,000-mile oil change interval. Yours may take the lighter 5-W-20 Oil -- check the oil filler cap for proper oil viscosity.

And no that is not drive by wire, you have it completely mixed up. Drive by wire is no throttle body or cables or flaps, it's all electric.
@3Wheels1Block5 жыл бұрын
He is mixed up about which car is drive-by-wire ( I think he mis-spoke, as he id clean it up later in the video). You are mixed up as to what drive-by-wire is as well. Older model throttle bodies were mostly cable driven, like the 2nd vic he introduced in the video the cable moves the butterfly (flap) just like the old carburetors. Drive by wire works the same, except a stepper motor (TPS) which receives an electronic signal from the accelerator moves the butterfly (flap) in the throttle body. The Drive by wire is no cable, but there is a throttle body and there is a flap. (there are several videos explaining the difference between the two)

May just be lucky. I'm running an ADTR intake tube, 3" or 3.5" (can't remember which size) AFE MAF tube, and an AFE cone filter along with an SCT tuner running an out of box tune with no issues on my 2011 P7B. I do know DBW Ford's can be finicky in regards to MAF sensor placement.

@KnuckleHeadGarage275 жыл бұрын
No don't even put a K&N air filter in your vehicle either of it has a massive air sensor . Because those air filter have oils in them and will pass into the mass air flow sensor and cause a check engine light or have problems or cause the massive air flow sensor to go out so if your vehicle has one I definitely recommend do not ever put one of those filters in there .
@j.griffin5 жыл бұрын
I have been told that it’s the K&N oil interfering with and ruining the MAF sensor. If you use a dry filter you’re fine. So I was told. I just use the best drop in OEM-style filter with heat tape wrapped around the inlet pipe. I don’t need more than just “a little bit better than stock”- I’m more into rugged simplicity,reliability and endurance. That’s where Vic’s really shine. What other car does a full tour of duty as a cop car and then “retires” to taxicab duty to run until there’s nothing left but parts being recycled into other taxicabs? Seen any Charger taxicabs lately?

it doesn't sound like a CAI in itself is an issue, the issue just based on what you've described here about it seems to be the differing diameters between where the maf and throttle is

Sounds like the K&N is based off of the 70mm MAF\zip tube of the civilian models. The CVPI as most know, uses a 80mm MAF\zip tube. You're getting the wrench because your MAF table in the PCM is set for the 80mm not the 70mm. The ETC doesn't talk to the MAF. The MAF talks to the PCM which talks to the ETC. If you want to flow more air in the CVPI air box, get the specific air filter element for a 2003-2004 Mercury Marauder. Is is different and It does flow slightly more air than the CVPI air filters. Note the CVPI and non-CVPI air filters are the same. BTW, both the CVPI and the civilian air boxes are CAI. The aftermarket CAIs are really just HAI that cost a lot of money.

Just curious, do you know if the ecu from an 04 vic will work on an 08 merc, is the only difference the electronic throttle control module?

The problem with the stock airbox on these Crown Victoria's I've seen though is they are very prone to warpage and thus allowing the filter to fall down into the lower half of the air cleaner box. I'm trying to find a solution for mine, but of course without making it run like shite and also sucking in a ton of hot air from the engine bay.
@zdhyde90085 жыл бұрын
It's not a problem with the cold air set up it is the filters themselves. Do not get oiled filters. That oil makes it's way up the intake and soaks iat, maf, map and so on. Vehicles that dont throw a code because of oiled filters are more than likely suffering some performance losses due to contaminated sensors.
@easycomeeasygo89015 жыл бұрын
I'm sure you will cover this in your next video. But this is the reason why many companies like to combine a cold air with a tune. I have no idea how tunable the p71 computer is. I just know that when I bought a cold air for my truck from Five Star Tuning they sold it with a tune. If the Interceptor computer is not tunable how about swapping it over to a Mustang computer?

He annoying. As an ASE certified mechanic, his videos are extremely biased and in some cases entirely false. Maybe he had a few 1% cases and then blows them out of proportion because it supports his bias but in over half of Scotty Ks videos I have watched, they simply are far from the truth or extremely biased. His demeanor doesn't help his case either. I used to watch his videos to laugh and point out where he was dead wrong but now I find him annoying because I am now bored with his "hey I am a mechanic on crack and only these two cars ever have been roadworthy". Its sad really because the guy does have valid points on some things but then completely discredits hisself by saying stupid things like boxer engines (or H type) are inferior engines and compared them to wankle engines. Hahaha! One minute a valid point... next minute... pure nonsense. That is why Scotty K is annoying to me personally. Add the caffeine factor and it amplifies it. Just my opinion though.

K&N filters are good for airflow. Bad for letting larger particles of dirt through. Project Farm did a video on this. Say you're at the drag strip. K&N filter would be great because you're only running for short periods of time. For every day driving I would stick to a WIX filter.

DRIVE BY WIRE ... actually means that the gas pedal has a rheostat and the throttle body has a stepper motor so the throttle is opened by a little motor and gears and the connection between the two is wiring with the ECM being in between .......

To my Son, I’m not gloating or saying I told you so. I’m not trying to make you feel bad. You’ve got great mechanical instincts. Don’t ignore them. There’s a very good reason why I do NOT like Turbos in cars. I studied thermodynamics in college. They are heat rejection nightmares. I’ve seen retrofitted twin turbo Corvettes with hoods melted onto the engine. I’ve watched giant car companies release turbos on small engines to make up for power lost to large V-6 or V-8 engines. Way back in the post-1979 gas “crisis”. They are NEVER reliable. It never fucking works. That’s why almost ZERO car companies use them for any length of time. I have some practical and logical basis for my opinion. Turbos are a heat rejection nightmare failure waiting to happen. Believe it or not. Car companies usually do an incredible amount of engineering on intakes, exhausts, xmissions, rear ends on their large volume vehicles. Especially fleet vehicles like the Crown Vic/ Lincoln Town Car. This guy spent a lot of money on a fancy cool looking intake for what? A few HP. If that? Ford did it right at the factory so it’s best not to fuck with that unless you are doing a huge high HP engine build. Just one Dad’s opinion told to his Son.

Tyrell Fort so if you cleaned the throttle body and destroyed a sensor by spraying it with the cleaner that will generally cause the light to come on. So will spraying starting fluid in your intake and getting it onto the MAF Sensor. There’s a lot of variables. What caused the fault code that set the CEL? This is the only way to actually help you, otherwise we can all give you ideas that may be completely incorrect. Proper diagnostics and repair saves money.

Mine goes into limp mode a lot I believe. Still runs and drives. And I still have the stock air intake. Cleaned my maf. And my throttle body. And still does it. Idk why. Would you know what I need to do?
@brianskinner43285 жыл бұрын
Actually it seems like the stock filter would be a cold air intake. It takes cold air into the intake to the engine. The supposed cold air intake is technically bringing in hot air into the intake. Even though the plastic shroud is Supposedly blocking the hot air, its still being sucked from the engine bay. The factory intake sucks the air from the outside. Also the oil from the intake can destroy maf and throttle sensors because of the oil used to keep the filter lubed. Not dissing companies, but from what I heard from other videos, it makes sense.
