He had good control and discipline. He was just thinking of it - probably - as more of a quad exercise than it actually is. Once corrected, he put the same control to work properly and Bingo. I had trouble with this, too, and Eugene's first cue is the same thing that got me in the right groove: shoulders a bit past the bar, hips a bit higher. The second and third tips are not ones I have heard before and are very valuable. I hope many people see this.

Yeah, this is probably the best video I've ever seen on deadlifts too. I mean, we're all there or thereabouts, and many Fitness YT'ers have covered the basics, but I'm all for taking some of it out-of the lower back in the deadlift and making it an 'easier' movement to perform. These are great cues.

Extremely good timing on this and I’m very glad I happened upon it. I was in a weird spot wear it felt like RDL was easier than deadlift with the same weight. Hardest part of the set was pulling from the floor to get into position. When I got to 3 sets of 12 on RDL, the next workout I added a little weight and more or less couldn’t pull it from the floor. These cues, especially the hip and shoulder positioning, were the difference between barely doing one and performing multiple sets.

Best tutorial on deadlifts I've ever seen. So simple yet all the cues mentioned. I've been having the same issue as him so now I know what to do. Love all your videos 👌
@aregranhaug8617Ай бұрын
I'm a beginner, so I made all these mistakes. Certainly the first one I was very guilty of. But I started noticing every video I was watching of competent lifters they had their shoulder blades vertically from the bar, not their shoulder joints, so I started leaning forward more, and that does several things: raises the hips, and help the bar clear the knees better. Certainly the first lift of the set is much improved from this setup. The consecutive lifts tend to sort themselves out easier, without needing conscious setup, it's just natural. Thank you for the video.
@64thReignАй бұрын
Im gonna need that wedge thing explained in more detail Uncle, im willing to try but i need to understand.
@sean7269Ай бұрын
Wedging is firmly placing yourself in your starting position and loading all the musculature that you're about to use - If the weight is very light for you, it may even come off the ground (As you can see for Eugene in this video) but when using heavier weights this will force you to adopt good starting position/activation for the movement. Here's a solid video on the subject: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6S1YYtqg6-qp6c
@jackgude3969Ай бұрын
He pointed out the float when he wedged correctly. Basically as soon as you active everything (core, back, legs) you should comfortably be able to float the bar if you can DL it.
@mydavegabicycleАй бұрын
When you're in the correct position and tight, you should feel like you're almost under the weight, just like the wedge is. So much so that the bar may come up. Someone has said that but feeling like you're physically wedged between the weight and the floor is what I'd be going for.
@matthewfish278627 күн бұрын
It's nonsensical. It doesn't make sense to you because is completely different from how you lift the bar. He even says, "I'm not lifting the bar up," which, of course, is exactly what you are doing.

2:07 was the cue I needed! After years of struggling with my deadlift technique where I would strain so hard to get it up off the floor - it would end up exhausting me before I could even get through the lift. Even though I knew my power and strength was there the whole time! What use to feel like glued weights now shooting up off the floor with less strain. I’ve also adjusted to a slightly narrower stance and it feels incredibly comfortable. Thank you so much! Finally getting over this technique block has me so amped to hit my next PR! Thank you!!!

fun fact ive lifted a 2 ton pickup truck in a competition for 12 reps. well it would be a trap bar deadlift. but i can also lift a ton with regular deadlift. im 6"3" and not fat at all. so its actaully easier as bar then closer to the body. deadlifting not really a test of muscle strenght just a test of leverage. both of these people in the video i could destroy in any deadlifting compettion as again not much to do wtih a question of strength. but good tips anyways. i dont have any technique i just lifited it. same was true for the tire flip contest that i won and beat 24 other peoples. no technique just again similar leverage. oh and i wanted to win more than all others.

nice, I like that cue: shoulder blade over bar. I know that I should "squat" the bar when I deadlift but I feel like my hips are too low but I don't want to raise them too high either. I'll try this cue to get that sweet spot.

@therocklauАй бұрын
You serious? Chin down is the most common cue for beginners, every single high level lifter or good coach would advice beginner to chin down starting up, since this is the easiest way for people to naturally use their curvature in thoracic spine, which is a skill. Maybe because this guy is muscular that you didn't think he is so very much a beginner I guess, the 3 cues, are the most basic ones, armpit directly above bar, "leg press" the floor, well the "pack up lats" cue varies from coach to coach so you might not heard Eugene's cue from other instructors but still it's the same thing, it's really just the basics.
@MidnightSlasherАй бұрын
Stop yapping, ges just saying g he's jutting g his neck more forward than normal. It's mostly likely because his body is trying to readjust to the more diagonal angle his torso needs to be WHILE having his scapula above the bar. So he's just leaning a bit too much because he's so used to being 90 degrees then squating th e weight up. Pay attention jabroni
@weregiraffe284Ай бұрын

I still get confused on the driving force of getting the bar off the ground. Should I be pushing my legs into the ground almost like I’m trying to get out of the bottom range of a squat or just purely “standing upright” by my moving my upper body and hinging my hips forward simultaneously? Or is it a combination of the two together?

That was great but I still think that big guy needs to get the "feel" for it. Lats back as if you mean to break the bar in two, hold that tension + butt up until you feel the hamstrings = tension and the bar starts to hover as soon as you sit back a tiny bit. From there you go up. Learn to do all 3 smoothly and low back will never, ever hurt.
