@casestudymtb3 ай бұрын
Man, having enough speed isn't the problem, it's feeling confident, in control and able to process the trail coming at you at higher speeds. I rarely ride anywhere near my top speed because my brain is dookie and can't make sense of what's coming at me.
@beno99663 ай бұрын
Most of that comes down to the rider's body. Flexibility and strength. If you are always holding on for your life and not in control, it's always going to feel like you are going too fast.
@BenCathro3 ай бұрын
Which is why the main tip in the video is bringing the eyes up more and sooner. It gives the slow brain more time to process what’s happening allowing you to relax and be more confident. Speed isn’t the goal in this scenario, it’s comfort and flow which results in the bonus of higher average speed.
@caljcam3 ай бұрын
Happens with age too, my dad still has the fitness and bike handling, but his brain doesn't process the trail as fast as it did, so his top speed is quite a bit slower than 5 years ago, regardless of where he's looking. Looking up is still the number 1 tip for any rider
@dropclutch13 ай бұрын
@BenCathro This true. The flow is so important. I am not the fastest rider but I have had plenty of PR's that surprised me because I wasn't trying as hard and felt like I was going slower. In hind sight this feeling was probably because I was looking further ahead giving myself more reaction time. I sometimes repeat the mantra "Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast." (while staying off the brakes as much as possible of course)

Ben, how are you liking the Dakotah Norton bar height?
@BenCathro3 ай бұрын
They’re a tool to get the stack height I’m after without running too many stem spacers. The stack on the deviate is low so I had to get extreme with the setup. I kinda like how striking and old school they look though.
@thermonuculur3 ай бұрын
I did this on a Capra, though not as extreme. With a 50mm rise bar and a slammed stem I eeked out a tad more reach and made a 484 reach bike fit like a 490.

If I'm confident I can keep up, but it doesn't take much to kill that. Slight slip I wasn't expecting, confidence in grip gone. Track too rough for me, confidence I can hang on gone, stiffen up, small bumps act like big bumps, strength gets used up too quick confidence drops more. Unknown obstacle, even a small rock, drop or branch I can't quite see over, is there a tyre grabbing puddle or soft mud the other side. Then you've slowed too much to easily ride over it as if it wasn't there.

Nah we never drop people- we just wait at the bottom, and support people to grow. However some rides we do we can't take some friends as we do downhill which some don't have the confidence to even try- so we have to be honest with them if it's going to be a ride they will walk/won't enjoy.
