No one is required to ID in the UK, ever. You can ID to the custody officer to make life easier but you can go to court as John Doe. The police can use certain methods (finger prints etc.) to ID you once you have been charged.

What is it with coppers today and their reluctance to identify themselves to a member of the public who asks them who they are. I was proud to display my name badge and collar number, and anyone who wanted to know was told my first name as well. Didn't really have to tell them where I was from as I stood out with a bright yellow jacket and white topped flat cap.
