It is easier said than done. What the examiners have to realise is that the person driving is a learner and they cannot just be a perfect driver overnight. It takes years to do. Moreover, the goal should be safety over hesitation.

I got a minor for Undue Hesitation - wasn’t sure when in the test, but my mindset was “better to get a minor for hesitation than a potential major”.

Good luck Laura. Just give the examiner a nice safe ride and always check your mirrors and you should smash it.

This is something I need to work on... my instructors never mentioned it but I know I do it 😅 I think I approach the junction too fast as I'm anxious to make the turn. Early days for me so this is super helpful and just what I needed to watch!

I've recently passed my driving test. I think you're absolutely right - don't stop if you don't have to. I find there are 3 types of give way lines. Super closed - you will stop no matter what. Super open - you have 5 seconds to make your decision and you can see for miles. And then you have in the middle ground where you have 1-2 seconds to make a decision. It's not immediately obvious whether you can go and it depends on your skill how good your brain is at processing these situations. The problem is that the cost of making a mistake is extremely high. If your wheels cross the give way line and you stop - it is game over, even if in real life it would have been completely fine. While I was practising I found it was very easy to keep looking 1 second too long and your wheels go over the line. The reality I think is that your risk to make a mistake in 1-2 second decision is much higher when you're a learner. As you get more driving experience, your brain adjusts and you can become less and less likely to make a mistake. And as learners we optimise for not making mistakes and the sure way to do that is fully stopping. However like I said you are absolutely right. The right way is not to stop when you don't have to. And you will easily fail for collecting 3 minors for stopping when you don't have to. I will just say that I feel examiners will be quite forgiving on those 1-2 second decision junctions even if you fully stop as long as you show that you're not doing it all the time and take the effort to not stop on really open ones. It also depends if there's anyone behind you. You're likely to get penalised more if there's cars behind you and you stopping when you don't have to. I would also suggest talking through your exam like "Upcoming junction is very closed so we'll stop to take a good look" or "Upcoming junction looks very open so we'll slow down and take a good look if we can go". That might help you to remember what you need to do and also show your examiner that you're thinking about stopping or going and not just defaulting to stopping..

Best comment 🙌! Definitely if you’re not sure then stop. Don’t take risks with your driving test! The point was that you should be practicing this before your test. The amount of mock tests I do with people who fully stop at every give way line, and then look, is outrageous. No attempt at observation on the move! It’s just poor teaching and I’m here to call it out 😊

It's actually stupid. Some of the ways you get the points on. It's better to stop and have a look if your not sure than to rush and cause an accident. Also if a cyclist does something stupid and out of your control its always your fault and not the the cyclist themselves. The test is based on luck depending on the traffic you have on the day. Just luck if nothing silly happens on the day.
