I totally agree with the idea that the obstructed or partly obstructed views are nothing to worry about, particularly when the price is right. A few years ago we had an ocean view cabin with an even better view of a lifeboat hull. No problem because it was SOOO cheap. It meant we could afford that extra cruise that year. What's the problem? Same ship, same food, same entertainment , same destinations. The problem we have had with a guaranteed cabin is being positioned over a noisy area. As you said, sound insulation is not always particularly good. So being kept awake until 2 am, when the music finally stopped, is not fun. Particularly ironic considering we had supposedly been given an upgrade. For that reason, and because I would not want to be either end of the ship, I would now always prefer to choose our cabin location. I have always wondered why the poshest suites are usually at the rear of the ship. The saying, "The more you pay the more you sway" is possibly true! Royal Caribbean usually puts them towards the middle of the ship, maybe for a good reason.

Great point about starting out in the "bad" cabin. Our travel agent picked our cabin on our first cruise and we discovered we loved being low down where it's quiet! We've only sailed inside and are quite happy to save the cash we save towards an extra excursion or another cruise entirely! Two inside cruises are much better than just one balcony cruise for us!

I love the idea of staying in an inside cabin on your first cruise. My wife and I did that on NCL America’s “Pride Of America” and enjoyed every second of the cruise immensely. We talked about that cruise for years and thought it couldn’t get any better. When we again cruised on the same ship, we splurged and went with a balcony; LOVED IT! Having the previous experience of an inside cabin made all the difference in truly learning to enjoy *any* upgrades. Aloha! 🌸🌺

A number of Princess ships like Crown Princess have a tiny cabin on the Lido Deck number L102. If you look on the deck plans it is much smaller than other cabins. When you check on line this cabin is almost always available and for many cruises prices drop near to sail date. This cabin is Ocean view and if you understand the Princess grading system Ocean view cabins are graded roughly OA to OG. This cabin is grade OZ so never gets chosen. There is a small deck ahead of it which nobody seems to find and the only space you lose inthe cabin is the corridor to the door and the walk in wardrobe. Tremendous bargain in my opinion.

You’re right. If you start with an inside cabin you’re glad of a window/balcony. If you start with a balcony you don’t generally go down. But balconies are awesome if you want a bit of outside space because crowds get too much.
@JulieWallis19633 жыл бұрын
I love to sleep with a window open. That’s why I like a balcony room. None of us want to sleep in a fug of stale breathe, old farts and dead snores lol. Even in minus 29 in Norway I had the balcony open a crack. Otherwise I’d rather like a dark inside room. I’d certainly not turn down a cruise if it only had a inside room.

Good video, I’m never usually bothered about where my cabin is. But last summer I paid to choose my cabin, when we arrived it was next to the crew stairs. It honestly sounded like we were in a tumble dryer and the whole room vibrated. I was so upset as the deck plan didn’t show this nor did my travel agent know. Luckily P&O were great and changed our cabin as soon as we raised it x

I have let the ship choose my cabins the first few cruises. They were OK but high up. On my fith cruise I decided to book closer to where I would be more likely to access more regularly. Like you I choose inside cabins to save money. So I could spend it on other things. For around 50 dollars more I paid to be in the middle forward section on my princess cruise. I choose plaza level 5. I loved this position. I was close to main dining room. International cafe. Library and could climb the stairs to next level to go to the theatre. Some people love being on the higher deck close to buffet and pool. I feel more privileged in my plaza level than been in a end or very front balcony of the boat. All for around 50 dollars more. I think when your on your first cruise you are just so happy to be on the boat. At the end of the day we all have our preferences and thoughts. On a positive Emma if you choose the guarantee route you are more likely to be offered a up grade. Thanks for your video.

We always try to go for a higher deck and forward with a balcony. We live to sit outside and watch the world go past and at the end of a corridor there are less people moving around so it's quieter too.

I've only been on one cruise (Majesty O.T.S. when it was only a few years old). I found out over time that I do tend to get a little motion sick on the water, so I paid not only the single supplement, but also for an outside cabin because I wanted a porthole. One of the tricks to not getting sea sick is to look out at the horizon if you start to feel ill. Sea sickness is sometimes caused by disorientation between your inner ear and what your body thinks should be going on, so if you can see where you are in space, you're less likely to continue getting ill. I was glad to have taken that outside cabin, because on the last full day, from Cozumel back to Miami we were in a pretty vicious storm in the Gulf for most of that day and night. It rained the entire stopover in Cozumel and they canceled all of the shore excursions, so a lot of passengers went to Carlos and Charlie's and got rip roaring drunk and then went through the storm. It was like a virus swept through the ship. Only about 2/3 of the passengers went to dinner that night, and passengers were so sick they were trying to sleep in public areas so they didn't disturb their traveling companions, the elevators were all vomited in, etc. The loose china in the informal restaurant could be heard crashing all over the place and when they served the departure buffet breakfast on arrival in Miami they had to use paper plates.

We booked a guaranteed inside cabin and got placed on deck 4 aft. We could hear the engine. It was a low, but constant murmur/drone. While I put up with it to save some money, others may not be as forgiving. But then another time, we got an guaranteed cabin and was placed 50 feet from the central atrium, but it wasn't noisy! That was super convenient.

I’ve only been on a handful of cruises, but I’ve taken the cheapest cabin...inside lower deck....and didn’t regret it. Honestly, the only time I spent in the cabin was sleeping or changing. The rest of my time was spent in common areas or excursions, and I saved hundreds
@Dedicated18605 жыл бұрын
We have also had 23 cruises and tend to stay in inside mid ship. We look for mid but not lowest deck (too near the engine). On one ship we arrived in our inside low deck cabin and it was vibrating! Sitting on the bed and we were actually shaking. We got moved immediately. Generally no problems though. The only problem with guaranteed cabins and upgrades, is that you can get a higher grade cabin lower down. We did get an upgrade on a Princess cruise however and got an outside (when we booked inside) upgrade which was excellent, even though it was at the extreme end of the ship. Thanks for your videos.
@Michael-Bennett3 жыл бұрын
14 cruises, all but one have been inside. Usually just get an assigned cabin but have started to pay (a tiny bit extra on Norwegian) for a specific grade of inside. The only reason we do this is that we rarely use the eleveators. It's nice to be on deck 9 or 10 and only have a few flights up to the garden cafe/pool deck or a few flights down to get to levels 6 and 7 where most of the public areas are. When they choose, we've often been on 4 or 5 and it is a long way up! Especially when it's done multiple times a day. Had a cabin below the Bliss lounge on one ship. We could hear the bass music but it stops by midnight so really not a problem (depending on what time you go to bed.)

On my last Transatlantic on the NCL Star, I upgraded to a balcony cabin, well worth the extra money on a 14 day voyage with miles of ocean to stare at and total peace. For shorter cruises in the Caribbean and even Alaska, an inside cabin is perfect.

I agree. Just being on a ship would be good enough for me. I'd only be in my cabin to sleep and shower, the rest if the time If be on deck reading a book, having a drink, walking the deck for exercise, going for a swim, attending interesting events, going for meals etc. I wouldn't even bother with wifi, I'd rather get to know and make friends with small groups of people on board. My parents went on so many cruises that in the end they didn't even bother getting off at the different ports. Being on the shop is the real holiday, we can be landlubbers when we get home. I love the sea and the rivers and cruises on both would be wonderful, but I'd prefer a smaller ship with an older crowd for sea cruises. The sea air always makes me sleep well. Total relaxation is what I crave on holiday, not frenetic activity.
@dgk423 жыл бұрын
I heard somewhere else that the primary function of a cabin is where you go to recover (aka sleep) after a long day on deck or on shore. As such, the bed is the most important aspect. Of course, avoiding excessive outside noise from people using stairs or lifts would be important, as would noisy ship machinery (yes, I read that comment).

I honestly think worrying about cabins at the ends of the cruise ship rather than in the middle is making a mountain out of a molehill. I’ve been on lots of cruises, and I’ve been at the back, front and midship and I’ve never noticed any room being a lot more ‘rocky’ than any of the others. I’m going on a cruise next year with my friends (who have never done one before) which requires two cabins, so we chose our cabins this time just because we wanted two next to each other. We picked the cheapest grade which was right at the front, but seeing as we had a choice over what deck we could have, we did choose a lower one just because they’d never been on a cruise before so didn’t know how they’d react to sea sickness etc. But that wouldn’t have stopped us being high up if we had to be, only because we had the choice.😄

We like to pick our cabin, generally midships and with a view. The things we avoid are cabins with interconnecting doors or near the lift. If possible we like cabins above, below and either side. I am like Emma and can go to sleep anywhere, the boss tends to pick up noises. We tried a inside once and didn't like it, we like to get some daylight though we are not obsessed by a balcony. We did a repositioning cruise and spent 6 days crossing the Atlantic, sitting on a balcony playing eye spy would be a rather short game.

I'd say it also depends on the cruise. If you're going on a Caribbean cruise where the focus is on the activities on the ship any cabin is fine. If you're going on, say, an Alaskan cruise where the focus is on sightseeing, investing in an ocean view or balcony and choosing the location would definitely be worth it in my opinion. I'm pretty introverted and so especially on a cruise such as a one way Alaskan cruise (like most 7 day Alaskan cruises are) I wouldn't want to have to be in a crowded, noisy public area to sight see. I also certainly wouldn't want to pay the balcony premium and book a guaranteed balcony where I would probably be placed facing the ocean where I wouldn't be able to see anything.

In my country, the ships that I had considered a cruise ship is actually a ferry and its either a Passenger/Cargo ship or a Passenger only ship and my mom or dad would book the rooms which have been all around wonderful. I categorized the ship into different parts (because of my obsession for Titanic) since there are areas that are open air that are 3rd class since its an entire area full of bunk beds and its open air, 2nd class is similar to 3rd class which a section has an entire area with air conditioning but with bunk beds and there are sometimes cabins which 4 strangers share a room with bunk beds in which to hold themselves and their things in (I hope that makes sense) and the only privacy is a curtain. Then the 1st class is usually a private room or a suite for which has a private bathroom and a larger bed (the most recent suite I had been in had bunk beds possibly for kids or adults and a larger bed for adults and kids). I loved the experience and I wish I had a more elaborate wardrobe for it so I can pretend to be from Titanic, minus the sinking.

I usually do pick a guarantee & have been lucky to get some upgrades & good cabins - once even a last minute upgrade to an owners suite (yes it was all the way aft & on a high deck - but there were only 4 cabins & the suite was massive & we got all the suite amenities - and we basically had our own elevator)!

I actually loved being less than a minute walk from the bar to my bed 😂😂. When you book the guaranteed cabin on NCL you do not get any of the specials offered. Inside cabin and up get to chose 1 of 5 offerings. This would be drinks included, WiFi for a certain time, $50 off excursions, specialty dining . This is important to know because in the end the inside cabin with one choice of specials is better .
@suntanman995 жыл бұрын
Excellent point. On my first ever Norwegian (NCL) cruise I didn't realize this and went with the guaranteed cabin. On my 2nd NCL cruise I paid just slightly more to pick my specific solo studio cabin and got $50 per shore excursion per day. Since I had 6 days worth of shore excursions that ended up being $300 of savings, which was far more than the money I would have saved by going the guaranteed cabin route.

This can depend on where you are booking from. In the UK, "Free at Sea" is added by a £99 fee per person (it's never free) and can still be added to a Sail Away Guarantee cabin. The upgrade fee in an inside cabin gets you two perks.

Personally I would prefer to have some view, and fresh air in the room, really comes down to personal preference and price
@EmmaCruises5 жыл бұрын
Yep absolutely. It's a good job we all like the same things or some cabins would be very full 😂❤️

Not guaranteed to get “fresh” air with a balcony - thanks to the lovely people who decide to ignore safety briefing and smoke on the balconies. Rather stick to AC

I've only been on the one cruise so far (Disney Magic), but the only time I spent in the cabin was sleeping, showering and changing clothes. I've splashed out on a balcony room on the Disney Wish next year, because the difference in cost between balcony and inside was only about £180, but I'm pretty confident in the inside cabin I'm booking on P&O Iona for a 7 night Norwegian Fjords cruise. I take the same view as I do of hotel rooms; once a hotel room is "nice enough" any extra money spent on it falls prey to steep law of diminishing returns. Iona seems to have some balcony cabins on the promenade deck which people walk past. I don't think they should be allowed to call these balconies. If it's not sticking out the side of the ship, it's not really a balcony. It's £300 extra on P&O to choose your cabin to avoid ending up with one of these god-awful cabins; not worth it.

When you’re on 23 cruisers, Minimum several times in each I would assume, ithink the cruise line automatic operate you in most cases isn’t it
@jeffaltier55822 жыл бұрын
My take is simple. I use the cabin to sleep and change clothes, so it doesn't matter much to me. And so what if something takes an extra 5 minutes? You walk everywhere on the ship anyway, so some places are always going to be closer than others.

Hi Emma! As you are such a mindful of information I was wondering if you have any tips on finding a cabin buddy? I would still like to continue sailing with Cunard but unfortunately either cruising does not appeal to my girl friends or they are a bit put off of with the Cunard dress code, which incidentally I love. Unfortunately my hubby no longer cruises and I’m somewhat put off with the high stateroom supplements imposed on solo travellers.

Noise bothers you? Earplugs will solve that. Can't sleep with the sun shining in your window at 5 am? Close the curtain (?) and use sleep masks. I just see ways around issues like that. 1 of your other videos, you said something about a cabin being 400 Sq ft.....I've lived in apartments that were less than 200. So again. It is all relative, it depends on what you are comparing it to. I remember you mention something about your pronunciation of the word assume. Crazy thing is, I never noticed it until you said something in a different video
@LibbyShawShow3 жыл бұрын
Why do you always book the cheapest? That said, when I cruise, I book an interior cabin. I don't need a balcony or oceanview. I have the ship to explore so I don't spend much time in the room anyway.
@teaeyedoubleguhur Жыл бұрын
It's not like you will be booked into Otis P Driftwood's extremely small stateroom as seen in A Night at the Opera. If anyone doesn't know that scene I'm talking about, you should be able to find it here on KZbin.

I'm amused by the terminology that "guaranteed cabin" doesn't mean that you're guaranteed to have a particular cabin. It's like if the warranty on your car meant that it was guaranteed to be a car.
@EmmaCruises3 жыл бұрын
It literally means you’re guaranteed to get the cabin category you booked, or higher. 💕
@danielschechter81303 жыл бұрын
@@EmmaCruises Yeah, I get that. I just think it's an odd choice of terminology.

It's really not that travel agents want you to spend more money, although of course they do. It's that they want you to have the best possible time. I used to sell cruises and I've recommended my clients not bother with paying for an upgrade when they already chose a stateroom they like, even though I lost commission. But I also try to book them into the best staterooms they can get for their money. The amount of commish I would get for them spending $200 more is negligible, compared to the disappointment I'd feel if they came home upset with their location. So I'll recommend they spend $15 more per night if they are going to get an oversized balcony midships, no guilt! I have heard that getting an inside balcony at the far back is just like having an outside, so try that maybe.

I guess most of the "bad cabin" review are just bad expectation management. If you pay a lot of money for a suite and then not everything is perfect, a small thing might "ruin" your trip while if the same things go wrong and you booked a cheaper cabin you might still have the best time of your life and enjoy the whole thing.

My first cruise we were given an inside literally right at the front of the Discovery, didn't know any different and it was fine ☺ A quick tip though, on Marella explorer on deck 8 and 9 there are 4 cabins right at the front, two on each deck that are considerably bigger than regular cabins. Yes they are outsides and you do have to pay to pick but sometimes a funny layout can work in your favour 😀
