We were upgraded from an ocean view to a balcony in the very bow of the ship on a transatlantic crossing and I was seasick for 9 days. Also, we had one of the most expensive cabins (penthouse) directly beneath one of the restaurants, and we heard people sliding their chairs all day. At night they washed the floors and put the tables and chairs back at 2 a.m. Another time we were above renovations (turning the cabins into a casino), and they hammered and drilled 12 hours a day. Yes, there are bad cabins.

My first cruise, I almost booked an inside cabin but got upgraded to an obstructed view. This was a huge benefit because I am a photo nut and without a window, I would have no idea what was happening outside. It's raining, it's sunny, there's something really interesting outside. I couldn't use the window for photography, but I could easily run outside to take my photo.

Which is why cruise lines like Royal Caribbean started putting monitors in the inside cabins that are connected to outside cameras. When you pull the curtain on the wall back, it is as though you have an oceanview cabin. And it is in real-time so what you see is current.

On RCCL, if you drink much the drink package is a good deal. With the package, you can drink top-shelf liquor all the time. I only drink the good stuff. Purchased individually, these drinks were a whopping US $15 EACH! That’s 3 Hamiltons per trip to the bar. YIKES! Late in the afternoon after getting back on board the ship, and sitting at the Sky Bar on the Allure before dinner, we’ve each downed north of 6 top-shelf drinks in a sitting. There’s only a shot of booze per drink, so they aren’t strong. That would be $180 per day for us. Then there are the nightcaps... 🥴 You’re still young, Emma. I couldn’t possibly explain the needs of us old dinosaurs to you! 🤠

Thanks Emma, you made it clear that YOU have not had a bad cabin in YOUR experience. Others might have, and some people prefer to choose specific cabins, but priorities and attitude are the deciding factor here; if you want to save as much money as you can and you always book the cheapest cabin going, this is sound advice. If you like to choose your seats on a plane, it's likely that you'll want to choose your cabin on a cruise.

Emma, you know I think the world of you, but I laughed out loud when you said that you don't think that there really are any bad cabins! I think you've given people some really bad advice with the thing about not paying extra to choose your own cabin. There are LOTS of bad cabins on every cruise ship. Cabins with noises from above or below. Cabins where you'll hear the anchor drop if the ship uses its anchor... and that's usually REALLY early in the morning. Cabins near loud music sources. Cabins with vibrations. And all of these cabins are known to the cruise lines because passengers complain about them on every cruise. You can very easily end up in one of these bad cabins if you let the cruise line assign a cabin to you.

I think the world of you too but I respectfully disagree 😉♥️

Now Jim to you and me we would think a cabin is "bad" ex: to much noise, above or under a bar (pub), near the engines. But, to another it is ...who cares along as I can save money. Personally when I fly I refuse to let the airline choose my seat and will not sit behind the wings (to noisy for me).

Another big mistake is booking in high season. Generally you are going to find the best prices when 1. kids are in school, 2. in between holidays like chrstmas and spring break and between labor day Sept and thanksgiving. 3 look for off season for the area. Alaska loom for april and may or sept and oct. much better pricing. 4 dont invest in a balcony if you are going to be in a lot of ports. balcony may be good on rans atlantics when there are a lot of sea days but otherwise you are never in your cabin. I highly recommend travel insurance. As you pointed out if you have to be airlifted off a ship it can be as much as $20,000. In addition many countries do not take Medicare from the U.S. and there is nothing worse than confronting a hospital bill in a foreign country. Those are the disasterous issues. I have never used it for those things but it covers so much more. My wife and I got an upper respiratory infection on a cruise ship and the visit to the ship's doctor plus meds was $200 each. We had to put it on our ship account but our travelers reimbursed us within 7 days of submitting our claim after returning home. We also had one of our bags lost for a day on our way to a cruise. The airline couldn't get us the bag until our next stop....two days later. The insurance covered clothing replacement for up to $600. I just kept the receipts from buying clothes on the ship and at the first port and submitted them and got a check back in 7 days. It's great coverage for both the big things and for extra expenses for things you never think about.

Massive travel mistake is to not keep track of your cruises. There is nothing like seeing a great deal and booking it then realizing that it overlaps another cruise you are booked on. I am in this situation now. :( Or you look at your calendar and realize that you are getting into Florida from a two week transatlantic cruise and realizing you have to get to California to get on a Mexico cruise that afternoon. Flight will work, but just barely with an hour connection and arriving two hours before end of boarding. Hopefully everything works....

Some of your advice doesn’t apply to US cruisers. The Princess inclusive price for our cruise included the Premium beverage package, gratuities, and unlimited WiFi. When I did the calculation, we would save around $ 600 based on the individual services pricing. Also, we are not charged to choose our own cabins on the US website. We always take the Platinum travel insurance Princess offers because for our ages, 70 plus, outside insurance is twice the price.

There are bad cabins as they are just under or over entertainment/laundry/the dinning room/kitchen. I always look up the ships configuration deciding what options we have. We made the mistake on our first cruise which was on Norwegian with an upper deck balcony near the bow when the Alaskan weather went wild and it was NOT VERY COMFORTABLE! Ever since we book mid ships on the main deck with a window. With the more than a dozen (17) cruises on ocean going ships it was not often that there was no bad weather at least once on the cruise. We book through USAA and there cancellation insurance we find reasonable. Holland America Lines offer what is called Club Orange which we got once only because the only cabins left which was at the bow, we booked just a month before the sail to Antarctica, we got a cabin upgrade to the Mid ship on the second deck. What we also got was free medical on board, an upgraded menu at dinning, (like lobster and steak plus added desserts), priority embarkation/disembarkation/getting on/off at ports/ where tenders used priority. I used the medical as off the coast of Chile I got a kidney stone attack. They took great care of me.

Regarding your 7th point- my travel insurance policy, which is probably similar to most, does not cover most/any otherwise included insurance expenses related to a pandemic. The corona virus was declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020. Therefore, people travelling with those policies may be out of luck for coverage for trip cancellation/interruption/delay. Unless a refund or credit is issued by the insurance company, the result is that people paid their money for little benefit. Plus, what about those who had their trips cancelled by the cruise company? Shouldn't they get their money paid for insurance back automatically? So far, I haven't!

Emma, all this footwork can be done from considering a cruise through cruise insurance by using an experienced agent or advisor. An agent/advisor will talk to you about what you want. We will do the research for you and many agents that work for companies will afford you additional on board credit and do NOT charge extra for their services. I earn my commission from the cruise line. When you book directly with a cruise line and have issues or questions, you will be dealing with a customer service rep at that cruise line and there is no personal interaction. When a client calls me, I know them and their likes and dislikes and you won't have to explain the situation in detail about your booking because I personally handled your booking. When you sign up for insurance using the search option, you will get loads of email and even telephone calls for weeks to months even after you choose a plan. With an advisor, we search for you and offer you the best price for what you need. And when it comes to your booking and your insurance, we are the ones that do the queries for you so you don't have to call personally. A reputable agent will be with you before, during and after your cruise. Just something to consider.

I don't know how those cashback web sites work, but I'm very skeptical. Nobody gives away something for nothing. If they're giving you money it's because your use of their site makes them even more money. I would not use a site like that without knowing where their profit comes from. My first guess would be that you are losing some rights or protections by buying through them. I don't know, but I do know that nothing is free. Buyer beware.

No cabins bad enough I wouldn’t risk it for a discount 😉

When I first saw the alcoholic drink package price, a little quick math had me saying that if this made economic sense for me, I really should be checking out the "Friends of Bob and Bill W. meeting" that the ship has every morning.

there are bad cabins near the dance floor or under it ha ha ha near the theater or other places that produce loud noise most of the day and night near the elevator lots of traffic you can punch a cabin in and ships name and see the reviews if there are any . dont take the free drink package unless you and everyone in the cabin drinks because you will pay $18 usd a day per person for everyone in the cabin in tips

When I vacation on a cruise I do not want to be in a location where I do not enjoy my cruise

I always pick my own cabin and it never costs me extra, maybe it's because I live in Australia 🇦🇺.
@sarge68703 жыл бұрын
Once you make your deposit, you should be able to choose a cabin.

I have never seen a charge for room/cabin selection, and I've sailed on 7 cruise lines. What cruise line charges $50 for cabin selection ??
@EmmaCruises4 жыл бұрын
I thought most lines did but it seems to be a British thing! This example I used was Marella who are a British line. 🥳♥️
