How you react to situations that spark strong responses, good or bad, can feel uncontrollable and much like a knee jerk reaction. How often are you sitting with yourself to observe the emotions you experience when you’re feeling triggered? Are you creating enough distance in time to allow yourself the space to analyze your reaction to the trigger?
Robert Greene is an author and psychologist that is well known and respected for his best-selling books on strategies, power, and seduction. This episode is your go to for all things Robert Greene as he delves into everything from what to do with your dark side and how to leverage that dark energy to the power of self reflection and the nature of language and non verbal languages. Robert discusses with Tom the practical ways to source motivation for real change, and how to live with the joy and bliss of being intune with self and your own nature.

QUOTES:
“The brain is like a landscape. It's like a landscape out in the world that you see, [...] You create that landscape yourself, you create the brain that you have, by the degree of how you're open to experience…” [21:46]
“My worry is that people are so immersed in their smartphones and their technology that they don't understand people...” [27:15]
“Question yourself. Stop assuming that everything you do is so brilliant and smart, and so right.” [34:21]
“As people talk, and they use words to conceal what they're thinking, their bodies reveal what they're actually thinking behind the words…” [41:34]
“Usually the people who think power is a dirty word are the people who are the most manipulative and passive aggressive.” [1:14:54]
“I'm trying to tell people that dark side contains incredible creative energy, incredible motivating power [...] when you get up in the morning, and use it, don't be afraid of it.” [1:36:27]
“We're so embedded in language that we think everything in terms of what people say, but unconsciously without even realizing it. We're continually judging people on their nonverbal behavior.” [1:39:16]
“Social media, for all the good that it does makes it very hard to be self reflective.” [1:57:40]
“If you can't, you know, take Brett breaks from social media, from your Instagram account, from Facebook, from Twitter, then you're a prisoner of it.” [2:17:29]
“What seems to be anarchic and ugly and awful in the moment does end up serving a higher purpose, because we need dynamism in our culture, we need change.” [2:48:19]

Do not outshine the master.. I accidentally broke this rule a few times.. Until I read the book had no answers on the corporate issues i had.. I didn't even know it was possible to outdo someone. I knew very little about ego and insecurities outside of dating.. I thought money n power meant i could never b a threat to people above me.. I didn't know anything about corporate games or politics.

God bless you in your recovery. Your child is more important than every material thing you lost. You'll get that back. You are showing your child the most important lesson in the world; how to make a comeback when the unexpected happens. That lesson will get passed down through the generations. It's valuable. You get bonus points if you do it with flair. ;) Research shows that children growing up in household where there is a disabling condition develop responsibility and compassion. Keep your eye on the ball. Slow and steady wins the race. You are ok.

Robert Green is so correct about not knowing ourselves and being mystery to ourselves, but also our anger coming from deep within us from way back in our childhoods. I often asked myself why am I so angry or sensitive about what someone says? Often I realized that it has little to do with what someone says but rather with the wounds I have experienced as a child and I am working through to heal. People say very cruel and horrible things in anger designed to inflict harm and pain. I get triggered by those hurtful and cruel words because of my unhealed wounds. Over time when I am healed more whatever someone says won’t be able to hurt me anymore.Sometimes I wish people are not so selfish or inconsiderate and other times I see how my desire to want others to be different from what they are makes me suffer because majority of people who are abusive and selfish etc are people who are absolutely unaware of their behavior or how it impacts others around them. As I am certain I am also not aware of how my behavior impacts others at times as well even if I put greater effort into making sure that I am careful , caring, and understanding ultimately I am flawed human being just like everyone else. Of course I make sure I am aware of myself and my actions but it’s been very difficult to understand how to process my emotions and feelings.

Nice and great comment. Only one thing can save us from our Daemon and from deep pain when hurt too much by life and others: work, dedicating us to a project, work again, and keep on progressing, and working again. For one goal, be better and surrounding ourselves from better people for a better life and lifestyle ... and beware of the narcissists. Very dangerous

I think it can be beneficial to look inwards and effect change that way, but in my experience, sometimes you just have to find better people to be with, or take a job with less human interaction. If you spend too much time trying to fit yourself around people, you'll end up bent out of shape! Some people and places are better avoided!

Everything is my fault . That’s what I say and preach . You always have the choice to act a certain way and then what follows next is direct result from your choices in life. That’s an amazing way to not be the victim all the time and take some initiative in your life. Life will throw challenges at you and it’s how you react to those challenges is what gives you the result

I like to see the world as a complex video game with certain fixed actions/reactions, and I'm the protagonist--like Mario--navigating it. Yelling at the Goombas, wishing they'd move differently, or wishing they wouldn't kill me won't change the fact that they killed me. It was from my actions that led to the Goomba Goomba-ing in the way they Goomba to kill me; it was my fault. The world is going to operate just as it will operate, and you can only control how you react as you navigate it. Dwelling on how things aught to be is a recipe for frustration and a deep sense of hopelessness.

This discussion is clear that we talk more then we know how to listen, thinking is the abstract process of what the Will can do not a fundamental bases of the only way to do a thing. Expression start in the womb, most people feel disconnected, and lost because growing in an environment that foresters limited ideas cripples expectation to be formula.

"everything is my fault" attitude can be very self-destructive if you're not careful. Also, it can instill a false sense of total control of the outcome or that your part in anything has a much bigger impact on the scenario than it actually has. Personally, I've had to learn to apply the opposite mantra "I've done what I can the rest is up to the other person" because I don't know how much sleep I've lost in my life due to overthinking things I could have done differently.
@n3m4ra
@n3m4ra Жыл бұрын
"My life is an exact reflection of choices that I've made" yeah sure, maybe helps some people sleep at night thinking like this but remember that people don't choose to become severely ill for example. Diseases don't care about your "ownership" of choices. No one has the exact same options when it comes to choices in everyday life, there are many boundaries depending on your resources and your health for example. Some people just have to do with trying their best with what they have in that moment and leave it at that.
@n3m4ra
@n3m4ra Жыл бұрын
What I'm trying to say is that this attitude that if you want to be different you make different choices is flawed. Sometimes the change we yearn is outside our control due to limitations such as health, or money for the matter. What's easy to change for some people may be near impossible for others for complex reasons.

Copy of my OP in another thread: "Everything is my fault?" LOL, that's the ultimate megalomania. Suppose you are a passenger in a car and out of the blue, you are broadsided by a drunk driver. Broad daylight, your driver is perfectly sober and has never been in a crash. Is it your fault? No, but rehab (and a fat lawsuit to pay for it) --- 100% your responsibility. You think you'll win if you tell the drunk's lawyer that it was your fault? Or that you'll make better progress in your rehab by blaming yourself? So twisted!

it's sad that society is set up to make us all feel miserable and influences us to be obsessed with wealth profit and materialism instead of teaching ppl that true wealth begins with self improvement so in that sense im very grateful to come across educational videos like this.

I dated a brilliant Cambridge educated scientist who married very wrong and handicapped his entire career trajectory. Robert's comments on marrying the wrong person and the envy of scientists is very true--- I barely escaped with my sanity.

I am overjoyed listening to this. A few weeks ago this would not have provoked joy and gratitude. I am wondering if you interact with fans? Are you interested in testimonies via email? Please share if so!🙃

I absolutely love this interview! Very smart on both sides, brilliant. I am just not sure if we are animals who need to become humans as the writer said, at least I never felt like an animal.

I believe in taking full responsibility of our lives and bottom line, however, just like everything else, nothing is without exceptions. I do not believe those living in warzones, kidnapped, murdered, or raped are at fault. Those who were born into circumstances and environments that will overpower any strength they have are at fault. If you are starving, there is little chance to be healthy enough to get up and do something. We are often responsible for our response to life, and just as often not. No need for extreme or finite thinking as it compromises those under dire situations who end up being blamed by those who take on this belief without fully understanding it. Where you come from is clear to me, but not to everyone, Tom. Not those who victim shame anyway.
