You hit the nail on the head here. I’m in my third decade in this business as a helicopter and fixed wing camera op. My people go to enormous expense to put an aerial on the show and usually only a few seconds at a time. I always try to offer up some sexy stuff, but it’s usually the meat and potatoes shots that you see at home or on screen. Coming back from break or scene change with my shot calibrates the viewers head as to where we are and then 1-2-3 cut to another camera on play action or talent. It’s an entire production not just about how cool the aerial guy is. Seriously, this is my profession, I’m at the top of it and you’d think I’d champion it more and more. But even I’m sick of too much aerial, or should I say the over use of the aerial asset. An aerial shot can have huge impact if used correctly and sparingly. But if the shot goes on too long, it’s like a joke that takes too long to tell. By the time you get to the punchline there’s not as much payoff. Nice work Mr. D!

Yeah, for me some movements are to hard to do, but then I realized that simple movements can make the final video really good. It just depends on the creativy we have to make the perfect shot.

Finaly!!! Finaly someone mentioned the same feeling that I had, and I thought that something wrong with me: that it is boring to lift the drone and filming different views with no specific reason and planning. Drone footage became so popular and available for everyone that to see something just from above is not so fascinating anymore. And sometime I feel lasy to lift the drone, If I don't see any chance to film something unique.

I think your considerations about not making drone videos boring are very valid and sincere. However, I would like to add two counterpoints, perhaps not because of the aspect of cinema, but of photography. 1 - going to a planned location and dissecting it regardless of whether everything is very well planned can be very interesting. In post production, incredible things are discovered, which were not seen at the time of capture. The creative process, then, is built in an unusual way, or is led to it later; 2 - in 360º photographs, for example, you have the chance to capture everything (something fascinating), and there will always be something very interesting to focus on. By that I mean, that sometimes without anything planned and doing a "machine gun burst" amazing things can be captured. Thanks for the video!

What is that mount your using on the bike’s handlebars for the drone remote?
@DjemoGraphic2 жыл бұрын
I agree. As a drone pilot and travel video maker myself, I see many people randomly fly drones without any clear mission. Even worse, they fly and annoy many people, which makes it harder for us drone pilots to operate.

I think the problem is that there is too much content on youtube, both drones and anything else and if a user does nothing more than watch videos of the same thing, in the end it becomes boring, because most of them film and edit in a while and they are videos without interest, but the videos of well-made drones are wonderful a few years ago it was impossible to make those images with no money either. but well-made drone shots are fantastic. Greetings

Good luck with starting droning. I suggest try to fly in an open space, where you will have less or no people. Try out some movements and you will see with each flight you get more confident. It's totally normal to be nervous in the beginning, even afterwards. I am now droning since 4 years and despite much confidence I got meanwhile, I still have slight feeling of scare. It's always good to have some scare subconscious feeling, thus, you will always be careful when droning.

Enjoyed this, muchly. I couldn't help thinking about a recent colonoscopy, and why camera novelty doesn't necessarily make for riveting pieces. No plot, no script, no storyboard, no character development. I guess that's why hospitals can't sell video tickets. And neither can drone flights that only show scenery. Oh, wait. Somebody is sure to do one on TicToc.

I’ve actually been thinking about this issue. Mine is background music. I’m not into background music as much for different scenes. Natural sounds of trees and nature would be more appropriate sometimes imo.
@SangheiliSpecOp2 жыл бұрын
I tend to like authenticity over real but "fake" sounds from sound libraries placed over videos. One way to solve this would be to have a high quality microphone out with you and record actual sounds from your trips. You might end up with some unique stuff and it would really be from the location that you were at
@reptilianresearchredux58872 жыл бұрын

Been watching some of your videos and they are so informative. Thank you. Question please, is it possible that drone footage can be played on a large scale screen with sharp images? Approx 10x20 Or will it be pretty blurry? Looking to start a business and need a few details worked out and possibly an experienced drone flyer. Getting my ducks in a row for this project. Thanks again

The weather also makes a huge impact. For drone flyers we have one source of light, the Sun! And when its cloudy it can really affect your footage. And if you want to sell your drone footage, the footage with sunlight is going to be more valuable (on average) than cloudy footage. Good video tho.

90+% of drone video are boring because they show everything and 3-4 minutes of large landscape is not fun to watch.I don't have a drone yet but I feel mixing drone footage with ground footage is the most exciting videos. you shoot over a forrest then do a walking video inside the forest. Do a tracking of a car get down and shoot a drive by from the ground too. Most films or commercials are not shot with only 1 style.
