In this video I will cure you from the frustration of missing combinations and not understanding why. We will start with basic frozen combos, look at friction and how this can make you miss those combos.
Then we look at more distance between the object balls and see how throw can push the object ball away from the intended line.
The biggest personal trick is hidden in that section. 💪
Enjoy!! 😀

The examples of needing to cut the first ball more to throw the second ball is exactly why I miss combos so often. I'm definitely practicing this in my next league meet. Thanks so much, Niels!

When the balls are stuck together for a slightly off angle combo, I just assume they act as one for a fraction of a second, which is why you just aim to cut the 2nd ball in as if the ball youre actually hitting isnt there

In the 1 7 combo example, the 7 seems to cut thin with normal aim because the cue ball will throw the 1 ball thick (cut induced throw) onto the 7. The spin transferred onto the 1 is negligible to cause the 7 to throw this much via spin induced throw. In any case, the results are the same, the 7 ball will miss thin and aim needs to be compensated. I find using a slight amount of outside spin to counter act the throw can also help with aiming this type of combo.

Good point! The reason I avoid using spin when the cut becomes pretty big, is that it’s too hard to aim where the first object will go exactly. Therefore I’m just guessing the aim and I found from experience without side spin I can aim a bit more precise, like snooker where I want object ball 1 to go 😄👍🏼💪🏼

I'm making almost all my combos now! I even made a 4 ball combo using the knowledge I gained from watching this video. Can you do a video on the nuances of aiming and shooting caroms accurately. How cut angles affect the shot and how to adjust? Hard vs Soft over long distances? I'm thinking mostly for rolling cue ball. (Maybe that's why I miss them so often.) What are the secrets? I want to STOP Missing Critical CAROMS :)

Awesome video, as always Niels! 😊 will for sure improve my game. I have seen many videos in the topic, and this was the best because of the practical elements. For the no-gap-combos I think of it more as pushing the balls, rather than cutting them. It helps my intuition.

A lot of people use spin and that works but it is harder to calculate accurately. It is easier to use no spin and control the carried over motion from the friction with force, as Niels is doing. The force will always push the object ball in the same direction as the cue ball. Very good video on how to do this consistently.

This is one way I like to practice combos. Have all 15 balls out, clustered so you can reach them. Set two up. Make one the grab and replace where the first ball was. Keep repeating that. You can get a lot of shots in. As long as your first ball doesn't travel too far (so not for every type of combo) this is really fast. You can vary the angles a lot too. Also, remember to switch sides after those 14 balls are down!👍

THIS! Neils, i was stunned to see you hit that ball so hard and not talk about slow speed = more throw! this also becomes important in the reverse scenario where you Don't want to throw the combo so much; you do that by hitting it hard.

The balls act like gears ⚙️ if you shoot slower they move further. The throw works up to about 1/8 of an inch at 3/16 inch it’s maybe. At 1/2 inch it’s a regular combination shot. It’s your job to check combinations that are playable, much easier than a breakout. Good shooting to you. 😊

Hi Niels....you make great videos. Do you have any tips on how to position head/eyes over the cue when shooting. No matter how i position my head/eyes over the cue i just cant see the shot line and the balls seems fuzzy. I would appriciate any help. P.S. I have a great eye sight, im right handed and left eye dominant.

Thanks niels for your very good videos. I just wanna say in separated balls combos I actually prefer to play the shot with a touch of outside spin to counteract the throw on the first ball instead of cutting it thinner. I dont really know how much thinner I must cut.
@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen
@NielsTheTerminatorFeijen Жыл бұрын
Yep fully understand. For me when there’s too much distance or cut the outside spin become a guess of where to aim. Therefore no spin and all aim 😄💪🏼

If the cue ball is hit at the one ball with right spin the one ball will get the opposite (left) spin and the next ball will be thrown to the right.....

The reason why the frozen combo you have to cut the 9 ball opposite of what is intuitive is due to cut induced throw. The momentum of the cue ball transfers to the 9. It’s the same reason you have to slightly overcut your standard cut shots. The momentum and friction Carries the ball slightly towards the rail the cue ball is going towards. Edit: also this is me just regurgitating what I learned from YT Sharivari but the effects of cut induced throw top out around 30 degrees of angle on the first object ball. Meaning that a shot at a 30 degree angle needs the same amount of compensation as a shot at 31-90 degrees of angle on the object ball.
@johnholmstrom4212
@johnholmstrom4212 Жыл бұрын
Slightly incorrect in the last part. Think about CIT as the mass of the cue ball pushing the object ball in the same direction. For a 30 degree cut (about half-ball hit), it is at the maximum because a larger cut will result in less mass contacting the object ball (less throw), and a smaller cut approaches a more straight shot, meaning the throw isn't as much as a factor. Therefore, 30 degree cuts need the most compensation, and 90 degrees needs virtually no compensation for CIT.

I have a legitimate question that needs answering which ball or you over cutting the one in the middle or the one that is actually getting pocketed because I'm missing them worse now then I did before 😂😂😢
@blaubar
@blaubar Жыл бұрын
02:40 That works because the contact of the white ball makes the first objectball spinning a little bit around the second objectball. It works even better with inside spin. Not to hard…
