Stop Pond Algae with Rainwater Collecting Contraption

To minimise algae, collecting roof water to fill the pool is the best option for most pools. However it is best to divert the nutrient rich "first flush". It is also important to avoid continuous filling. This strange contraption fulfills both functions.

I'm never sure if these presentations are sketches or meant to be serious. Either way they are amazing. Why this man isn't on the BBC is an enigma.

I only recently discovered this channel after having been curious about natural swimming pools. David resembles James May when giving his presentations, and I mean that in the best way possible. I love his way of presenting. I agree that he would fit right in on the BBC during an educational program, preferably talking about some sort of water treatment or some other such thing.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I love the systems you design because they are simple mechanical things or passive systems not requiring external inputs. Cheers and greetings from Hungary!

Fantastic! I love your build videos. If I may a suggestion? At 7:21, where you show the silicone tube draining out of the jug (bucket, etc), there is no flow into the jug as the rain continues and the device will reset prematurely. If the same size tube was ran from the righthand end of the "see saw" gutter into the jug, the jug would remain full until the rain stopped.

What a pleasure to listen to your videos, thank you so much! I plan to install an underground rainwater tank (ciment) with a filter so the water can be reused for our toilets/washing machine… Is that ok to use this collected and filtered rainwater to fill in our organic pool? Or is the fact that the water has been collected in a ciment tank a problem (ph? Something else…?). Thanks again and all the best from me here in the south of Belgium. Dounya

For people who didn't notice, you can fine tune the amount of water required by changing the weight on the left.

I’d love to find someone who teaches how to make a natural pool without the huge outer dug up area, using a regular pool and putting tubs of plants along side to clean the pool water, with a pump. We are trying to figure this out on our own since we are having trouble finding anyone who is teaching this on KZbin. We don’t have the energy or real estate to dig up around the pool for the usual natural pool set up...hope you have a lovely year, happy spring and summer!🌸

I did a film using 2 IBC tanks to show how you can a have separated planted area to the swim area. And it uses my same system of bubbles to move the water.

What kind of science could I read about to learn more about the biochemistry going on with natural pool filtration? Any topics in specific? 😀 I discovered your channel hours ago and I have been binging your videos since then!

Hi david, i am planning a very large natural pool to build in the next 12 months, unfortunately its too far away from my home to use roof water. My idea was to bore a shallow well and use a pump for filling. Would well water be ok to use? Im thinkking that the bubble pumps would oxygenate the well water too. Cheers

David, first of all I'm a fan and I'd like to build a pool, but I'm wondering about a natural pool, I have some concerns - about parasites, bacteria, say a bird brings in an amoeba or. some harmful pathogens into such a water system.. can it thrive in chlorine free water? do you have any experience, knowledge? what you think? Take care.

I have been wondering why the pools/ponds all over Kolkata, in India don’t have an algae issue. I guess that’s cause they are rainwater ponds?

What a pleasing contraption. Do you think the initial flushed volume is sufficient to clear the roof of gumph? Keep up the videos DPB, still my favourite channel on KZbin. 👍

@@organicpools-davidpaganbutler just need to work out how to incorporate this into our upcoming pond build. We want to divert some water into a rainwater tank for watering then the remainder to the pond.

But very niche... Surely there are very few who would choose salt water over fresh water. Intrigued though as there is surely a use case somewhere? (A natural desalination process would be the holy grail!)

So the purpose of this is to avoid excess nutrients from the roof flowing into the pool to avoid algae growth.

Is there an ideal roofing material to use roof water in an organic pool?
@organicpools-davidpaganbutler
@organicpools-davidpaganbutler Жыл бұрын
Good question.. I have not thought of that. Normally we are stuck with whatever roof we have and just make do. If I had a choice then ideally as clean as possible, maybe a EPDM membrane on the roof. But practically, go with what you have. The only roof to avoid would be a "green roof" that was fertilized.

@@organicpools-davidpaganbutler I'm trying to come up with dream home designs and I plan to incorporate a sort of organic pool as a modern moat around the main property. I was trying to think of a way to top off the pool and avoid runoff from the land entering it. I have the idea to make the whole thing out of concrete, and have essentially jacuzzi style jets along the outer rim to constantly circulate the water, to prevent stagnation, at least in the summer months. Also possibly using the water as a heat battery for home temperature regulation.
