Used to own a 97 Cadillac Catera. Great fun car, but so scared to break timing belt I changed them every 30-45000 miles at $300 a pop ( with water pump & tensioners). $5000 for a rebuilt 4 cam Opel engine that would be useful for a boat anchor or a paper weight if it broke. Oh well, now I know! Thank you so much for your info. I've wrenched on my own stuff all my 47 yrs. and have learned so much from your videos. Keep em coming!!!

Most timing belt failures aren’t due to the belt itself just snapping. I mean in some extreme examples, but most timing belts fail from tensioner or idler pulleys seizing and or the water pump leaks, throwing the belt. Good tip, just wanted to let those know who might not already that cracking rubber isn’t the number one cause.

Good information. Be advised that most quality belts will go well past their intended. This seems like it would be an advantage. If you have an interference engine I would advise you to keep a check on your water pump. If you have strange noises coming from that area, check for play in water pump bearings etc. the cause of many timing belts breaking. Best advice is to change your water pump when you change your belt with a high quality water pump. What I also do is to add grease to any bearing I can, with a small needle hypo needle. Important to me.

It should be noted that this will prevent a timing belt break but not slipping off a timing belt tensioner. Which would have the same effect as a break. To me a 100k replacement is not so much the timing belt but water pump and timing tensioner. But great product.

Higher compression is a good thing on interference engines. Most people don't think about car maintenance, just put gas and go till can't go anymore. Alot of doctors would be out of business if people took care of themselves. My mom back in the day would put like $1.50 of gas in car, but she had it down to a science. Would run out of gas and have enough momentum to reach a gas station pump .Even trained us kids how to prime a carburetor and put out flames in a backfire. Those were the days, big station wagon and no seatbelts or baby car seats, airbags...just take your lumps as they come, and listen to groovy a/m radio.

A chain isn't necessarily better. Tensioners still fail. Guides wear and fail. Gears wear out. Interference engines offer better performance in a tighter package. Maintain your vehicle and it won't be a problem.

@@hondaguy9153 a geared transmission between the crankshaft and camshaft (if sprayed with engine oil) should last as long as the rest of the engine. That's how it's done on marine and industrial diesel engines. The reason why car manufacturers don't use it is because of cost, weight and car engines are not meant to last that long.

Denny Mk it's the heat we put into the belt, then treat the belt and then heat again...that's the secret, we force the rubber to accept the conditioner much like motor oil, when you put heat to it, it softens up and flows and since most all rubber is made of some type of petroleum product we force it to accept the conditioner and it flat out works :) thanks for the great question my friend

Thanks for all the great tips and secret info.. I was curious about placing the belt in the oven. I guess my concern is does it do any harm to the belt? Or what benefits are there to heating the belt before you soak it? Does it not make the rubber brittle or effect the fibers or cords inside the belt? The 303 is some great stuff I bought a gallon after watching some of your videos. I have also seen a few videos were they don't use the oven but just soak the belt in 303, the let it dry before installing it. Thanks
@SweetProjectCars
@SweetProjectCars 5 жыл бұрын
Jeff Lemley well if we put this in to perspective the heat of the oven is now where near the heat your engine is putting into the belt take a digital laser thermometer and check the temp of your engine block near the timing belt area and you will be amazed at how hot the engine really is ..and as you know heat softens thing and when the belt is softened it absorbs the 303 better...other videos you have seen on this are nothing but others trying to copying our original idea, now one on youtube has ever done this method before us just look at the load dates of the videos my friend...you can treat the belt how you like we are just sharing what we have found after years of working with this method what works the best....ty mike

Mike thanks for your reply to my question, Im going to give it a try.. so I think you also stated it would work on any belt during the video? Serpentine belt at 170 also or lower because it's not as thick. I'm also interested in trying it on a CVT drive belt on my Polaris Razor. Not sure if I'm calling it by it's true name but it is the very thick belt that runs between the clutches and the Transmission . It takes a beating and they are very proud of them...LOL.. looking forward to hearing from you again soon.

My understanding about Honda's policy on belt change is the waterpump is one of the things required to change when changing the belt, because the water pump goes out, first taking the belt and engine top end with it if it is not done. The engineers who designed the interference engine should be whipped with one of those belts a few times. I like to make my car into a zero pressure radiator system to make the water pump seal last longer. I would not recommend that in some hot climate with AC though.

@SweetProjectCars 3 жыл бұрын
Alright Jared, you have opened a can of worms. Now I want you to stop for a moment and think about why manufacturers don't make things that last a lifetime or even 10 times longer. I will give you 30 seconds to think this out......................... ding! Times up. If you didn't already answer this yourself, let me oblige you, the answer is "MONEY" if you're not replacing items that they make then they are not making "MONEY" They could easily build a vehicle that probably never had to be repaired or replaced. They could build a car, which one man did, out of stainless steel, his name was DeLorean, John, but the big 3 made sure that he did not succeed. That's just one example, so all in all, they want you buying and replacing stuff so they can keep sucking your wallet dry. Have a great day my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC

This works on any rubber belt. If you're talking about alternator belts, watch this kzbin.info/www/bejne/moO7nKdsecycas0 Thanks for your question. Have a great day my friend. mad Mike the hammer SPC

Well first off, there's nothing used in or on a car that if ingested won't put you 6' under. Have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC

Do yourself a favor look up the car before buying it and make sure it has a timing chain instead of a belt. If it's got a belt walk and get a model or another brand that uses timing chains. For example most Toyotas are timing chain driven. However, they did use belts in some models so look before buying.

Very good advice...provided you'll find another car you'll be interested in, that use timing chain. Sometimes, the buyer is forced to buy that particular belt driven car. Eg. -You want a Toyota SUV but the model you really want it's belt and not chain driven...but on other side, there's Toyota sedan that's chain driven. Therefore, you won't buy a sedan for your "big" family because it's chain driven...you'll have to go for that bigger suv because the benefits of bigger car compared to smaller car are great even though it's belt driven.🤣🤣
