Formal & INFORMAL, STOP SAYING… I know, I understand 16 ALTERNATIVE PHRASES To know to be aware of something through inquiry, information or observation. WHY STOP SAYING ‘I KNOW’? 1. To broaden your vocabulary. 2. Subtle differences in connotation mean more effective communication. 3. To avoid sounding like a smart-arse. Informal English 1. “I get it.” “I get ya.” Meaning: to understand 2. “Gotcha.” /’gɒtʃə/ (I have got you) Meaning: I understand you. “What time are we meeting tonight? 8.30. Gotcha!.” 3. “I catch your drift.” “I get your drift.” Meaning: I understand what you are saying. “She isn’t the sharpest tool in the box… if you get my drift?” 4. “I hear what you’re saying…” Meaning: I’m listening and understand… but I might not agree. “I’ hear what you’re saying, but I really can’t agree with you. 5. “I get the picture.” Meaning: I understand your explanation. “It’s alright, don’t say anymore, I get the picture.” 6. “I don’t blame you.” Meaning: I understand why something thinks or has acted in a certain way. “I don’t blame you for feeling disappointed, you worked really hard, you deserve the promotion, not Bob!” 7. “I managed to grasp.” Meaning: manage implies difficulty. To understand- it takes work. “I’ managed to grasp what she was saying, but really, her explanation was totally confusing” 8. To notice. Meaning: to become conscious of someone or something. “I noticed he didn’t look very happy at the party last night.” “I noticed the information in the report was a little bit inaccurate. 9. To be aware. Meaning: to know that something exists (Perhaps more serious) “I’m aware that she was late yesterday, and I will be dealing with the situation.” 10. “To realise.” Meaning: more serious-to understand a situation sometimes suddenly. “Do you realise how important this meeting is?” “I Do realise how important this meeting is. Grammar Tip Use the auxiliary verbs do/does/did to add emphasis. 11. To appreciate. Meaning: to understand a situation and realise that it is important. “I appreciate how hard you have worked but I still can’t offer you a pay rise.” 12. To recognise. Meaning: To accept something is legal, important or true. “You must recognise, the seriousness of the situation we’re facing here, we may have to go into liquidation.” 13. To acknowledge. Meaning: to accept, admit, or recognise something, or the truth or existence of something more formal - better written. “She acknowledged having been at fault/her mistakes.” “She acknowledged that she had been at fault. 14. To comprehend. Meaning: to understand completely. “I fail to comprehend their attitude..” “I don’t think you comprehend just how serious the situation is. We may need to fire people.” 15. I see your point I take your point. Meaning: accept and understand what something thinks but you may not agree. “I see your point, however, I still feel we need to make cuts to the budget.” 16. It has been brought to my attention (that…) Meaning: very formal - I know because someone has told me. “It has been brought to my attention that you have failed to be on time everyday this week.” “It’s been brought to my attention that you haven’t completed your assignment, is there any reason why not?”

Remember Conjugation of Verb: present tense ,past tense, egtc. Tense synonym for time...correct! I get it! to replace the answer I know or I understand... To me ... nothing is wrong to say I know or I understand because your updated modifications synonyms are the same heading to one direction from the original expression ( I know or I understand) Question: In my country we have " board of education" educators to consilidate their 1 knowledge if certain topics to be approve or not.. QUESTION: Do you have a " board of education in your country if these " updated modifications ( I know or I understand) be the universally implementation correct usage replacement of the said phrases which is stated above?

Hi Leila. How are things? Interesting lesson, as always. I see your point; using 'I know and I understand' all the time can be a bit dull. You hit the nail on the head right there.👍 Thanks a bunch☺ Another alternative for 'I know' could also be to be certain about sth e.g. I'm certain that the bus will arrive on time today... the bus driver told me. Have a glorious weekend💖

Managing to grasp people 's real mindset is often tough. Incoherence and inconsistency are so popular nowadays. So, hardly ever I can say, I get it or I don't blame. Can you get the picture of what I said? 🤔Nope. My bad!😂 Take care 🇮🇹🍀🇬🇧
