That was a great lesson. Thank you!!! I came from Taiwan and I thought I was the only one who had a problem with answering a simple question of "How are you?" In Taiwan we simply say "Hello" to each other and if we really care, we would follow up with a more specific question. It's perfectly fine to say " I'm fine thanks". You answer this way to someone that is either a stranger, acquaintance etc. Because you are not going to answer in detail. The person asking isn't really interested it's just a polite version of "hello".. No one is going to start rambling all the good or bad things they are experiencing that day. If it is a close friend and or a family member and they are genuinely asking and you can usually tell because they notice something is wrong. Then you can also say I am fine and it would signal you don't want to talk about it. Or if you do, and you noticed it was as I said a genuine wanting to know question, you spill the beans and say how your day was. When someone asks me "How's it going" I reply "It's going".. Meaning "same shit different day" or "as usual" and it also means I am not getting into it. No one wants a full story in reply. It's just common sense.
