I was short drawing for years, then went to a lighter weight bow. Now I'm working on finding my consistent anchor point but getting better. Love Trad archery.

Do you have a recommendation for a starter bow and accessories for a 7 year old? My son has been sneaking into my bow supplies and taking my arrow shafts to shoot with his toy bow for over two years, and I think he might be to the age he can have a bow.

I use short draw when shooting VERY close 3D targets. Sometimes they are so close that any other way of shooting seems a waste of a good draw ;).

5:44 I was coaching a novice recently and saw a variation on the thumb up but for Olympic under the jaw anchor that reminded me why I strongly dislike the thumb up pose. They were hooking their thumb behind their jaw bone and using it to lever their draw hand to anchor. For a trad/barebow anchor I don’t think you can do that unless you lever off your ear. Either way it’s a bad habit to get into even at low beginner draw weights. Not only is it weaker than using the back muscles to draw, but by leveraging off the head, you’re transferring bow tension to your neck and likely pivoting it and altering the anatomical location you’re attempting to anchor against.

I'm new to Archery and shoot pretty good for a beginner with my anchor on the side of my face. My trainer told me to get into full draw and now my anchor is way far back on my yaw bone. Now my Arrows are a bot to short and i'm over the maximum draw length of my bow. Is there a way to keep my old anchor and get a proper alignment?

Alignment is more to do with elbow position rather than the anchor point. Whatever anchor point you use, get the elbow behind the head.

I wonder how many ppl short draw out of fear of the fletching. Like they think it'll scratch them. You being an instructor, I'm sure you've come across ppl new to archery that fear the string slapping them or fletching scratching their hand. I'd imagine that could exist for short drawing as well. Then there is ppl who are new and don't understand draw weight, so they get a bow too heavy for them, thinking "I'm a big strong man, 50 lbs will be easy to start".
