Fender has entered the switcher market - and in a big way!
The switchboard has 5 reorder-able loops (the 5th is stereo), it's a midi controller, amp channel switcher and input / output buffer!
This was designed with RJM Music (the best company for midi and switching systems). It's easy to use and the perfect way to get into midi if you've never gotten into this world.

Would love to see more about the switchboard hookup, types of recommended cables for the back, other ways to route using your junction boxes with consideration to using two amps, wet effects to effects loops which won’t fit switchboard, and generally how to make the most of it with a larger arsenal of pedals. Can two stereo pedals be run in to one another and in to Chanel 5 stereo loop as well? Midi configuration examples perhaps as well?

This is precisely how a guitarist MIDI pedal should work. I use MIDI extensively to give me what I’ve always wanted - simplicity. The complexity of MIDI can be used to make a rig operate in the simplest way, like a dream come true. But to do that, the MIDI compatibility has to be 100% all encompassing. It seems ironic but once you design a system simply by question and answer, you find that it is not. “What do you want? Any other special requests? & ‘there are no wrong answers’” requires the deepest of MIDI’s capabilities to realize for every guitarist. Very complicated programming with very simple operation. That sums up the art of pedal system design.

Same here - I use the MS-3 as the switcher/controller for my rig, I've invested soooooo much time in the setup and whilst I'm generally happy with it, the biggest "miss" is not to be able to adjust the signal path (series/parallel) or the order of the loops. I get that the MS-3 is more than a switcher with all the built in effects .. so the "ES-" models are a better comparison here

I bought a ToneX at the near peak of its popularity. Now we have the new Tone Master Plus along with existing amp modelers. Since I can't afford a Soldano SLO-100 (nearly 4k) or almost anything Marshall, etc. Thus the reason for the ToneX. While I do plan on purchasing a couple of amp heads in the future, I need something much smaller to take to rehearsals. My EVH 2X12 is heavy and awkward so my guitarist told me about the ToneX. The ToneX pedal will be the center of my pedalboard for the reasons I just stated. It is much easier carrying my pedalboard instead of my amp and cab. At rehearsals, I can set up endless amps and cab combinations that fit the song. I want to be able to basically have a set list programmed into something so I can bank up and down and select the loop that gets me to where I need to go. One song may be Tom Petty, another may be Journey, and still another could be Van Halen. Also, there could be everything in between. Briefly, if you could, I would love to see a deep dive into how integrating a ToneX as the amp can be controlled by the Fender Switchboard. I think it would work well, based on what you've explained so far, but I am MIDI curious and have always used a few traditional pedals. But because most of my experience is playing bass using only a particular preamp to get the sound I like, getting into guitar is awesome and overwhelming. Thanks for your videos.

My big concern would be if I'm able to control 2 separate amps with this. I've never used a Pedalboard switcher but this one caught my attention, I only use a hand full of pedals but do split separate modulation pedals to a left and right Amp and having the ability to basically have the option of ABY would be great. I do see a "mono/Stereo" switch for the main output and can use a TRS Y to two mono (L/R) but would need the option for ground lift / polarity if needed.

Great video @GoodwoodAudio !! Question: you positioned the Switchboard as an "entry level" unit into the world of midi. The Switchboard has the ability to send both PC and CC messages to midi aware pedals. What other more "advanced" midi functionality do switchers at a higher price points offer (such as the RJM switchers)? Thanks
@GoodwoodAudio
@GoodwoodAudio 4 ай бұрын
Good question... RJM (being one of the more complex options if you want them to be) would offer very deep editing, macros, sysex, hitting one button on the switcher, sends midi and then automatically sends you to a new page, double tap, hold functions, midi libraries, clock etc... The switchboard allows you to get your head over the basics (PC and CC) without having to navigate higher level features that can tend to just add confusion if you aren't used to the basics first / or (in reality) it just takes longer to feel comfortable with a more complex unit than it would with something like this.

I assume each preset can be assigned to a foot switch so that I wouldn't need to go through preset 2 when switching from preset 1 to 3. In practice I'm not yet convinced it would offer more than a Quartermaster gigrig 8 that's inexpensive. Now I need to know more. Thanks.

Wow, a total game changer. I wonder if you can program the internal volume as a volume boost on a preset. Also, if putting a regular loop after the stereo loop: will it kill the stereo effect? And finally, if using two amps with the stereo out, can it be programmed which one amp to use per preset? I know I am asking for too much, but if this device can do all that I am totally sold with Fender's venture into the effects territory.

I'm curious about the limitations of the midi implementation. Seems like it's relatively deep? Send to multiple midi channels, pc and cc changes, assign expression to cc controls, etc. I'm using a Morningstar MC8 and ML5 and seriously considering "downgrading". Curious what I may be missing out on by making that change. Obviously would miss out on more advanced footswitch control (press, release, long press), and fewer presets per bank, but I can live with that. Additionally more advanced features like midi CC waveforms. Are you able to save and name midi presets to recall them in stomp mode? Or only in preset mode? Maybe that's the biggest loss in my mind, but again, the simplicity means more playing, less editing
@GoodwoodAudio
@GoodwoodAudio 3 ай бұрын
ya morningstar has a much richer midi environment. You'd also be missing clock (switchboard doesn't come with clock)... But if the midi implementation here (PC and CC and presets) covers you, I agree that going as simple as possible for your needs can be really helpful. Morningstar can get quite simple as well though ... It's really hard to say with this not being my rig! Both good choices... you'd just want to think about your context / what you actually need and then make the call
@algleymi24

That would depend on the particular pedals. So long as the switcher has a path open for the delay or reverb pedal, it's the pedals' characteristics and behavior that will determine whether you have spillover. @@CBGypsy03 it's called trails on delay and reverb pedals, it's when you turn off the pedal and the repetitions end gradually instead of instantly, making the transition cleaner. In switchers with the spillover function, when you turn off the loop with the delay pedal in, it closes only the "send" to the pedal, leaving open the "return" of the loop. Spill over is not considered to be a "real" neccessity at this point. Only "divas" want spillover. No spill over but what I get people to do / how we program rigs when you're in a situation like this is either: 1. Leave the loop ON when you want spill over and turn the pedal off (let's say it's a delay) with CC messages via midi 2. Use a line mixer... Use the SENDS of the loops you want with spill over, send to the pedal, output of pedal to line mixer... Now when you turn the loop off it mutes the send to the pedal. The RJM gear (and Switchboard) allows you to use the SEND only and will carry signal to the next loop... So it's easy to run parallel / send with spillover in this manner as well.

I think it's $449... for a switcher with midi / re-ordering... not bad. But I also get that it's not cheap for a piece of gear.

This 'New' Fender product is really showing just how their marketing works. So far I've not seen a review that points out that it's pretty much what's already been available from Boss, GigRig, RJM and more for years... But with way less functionality.... It's a toy.

@@GoodwoodAudio I suppose the majority of people who are using a midi switcher will understand the lingo. I haven't taken the dive to watch a full tutorial yet so that may be on me. :) Perhaps 30 seconds of 'in other words, here's the 3rd grade level summary' would help to translate that to the newbies while still letting you tell the more experienced users the full details. :)

what about stereo? flying cars…2024… i wont by another producht wich collapses my stereo chain. it IS posiboe to have one jack doing what you plug is what you get. its just devs cutting corners beeing lazy, and greedy. bring innovation or wither. nah you wont. guitarists are a bit dim (im one) will buy anything.

Loop 5 is stereo (and a stereo output to the rest of your stereo chain)

this product just makes no sense to me. 400 presets for 5!=120 pedal combinations. a yes another 120 for on off states. For someone serious into pedals 5 loops makes NO SENSE. not enough. to tap dance 5 pedals isnt even a challange. this thing its too small. A beginner would be better off to get a used hx Stomp. put mono pedals in front have all pedal combinations you want AND Stellar effects for the same price.and it also has ONE Stereo Loop. Fender, what were you thinking? @@GoodwoodAudio

Honest question, could you run your delays and verbs and other stereo effects in that one loop, or would you need more? Making it crippling like you said. This is all new to me, I use verb on the amp and run maybe 3 or 4 pedals. Thanks
@therewasascene
@therewasascene 6 ай бұрын
You could run them in one loop but what if you want to take advantage of the ability to change to a combination like OD + only reverb with one button push? And then into a fuzz with stereo modulation let’s say? It would feel really disappointing to be able to tap a single button to change entire combos but only half the time. No switcher with all the awesome features also has enough loops for me to consider getting one. I just want two patchulators. Can’t switch combos on the fly but you do have limitless routing options. For you though, with 3 or 4 pedals I wouldn’t think that the tap dance or changing order would be too bad without a switcher. Esp. with how much they cost.
@GoodwoodAudio

typically in a scenario like this, you'd run dry effects in the switcher, and modulation in loop 5 (as an example) and delay / verb after the switcher (controlled by midi).... So you get control over your entire board across both the loop switching and midi control. It's not a switcher for everyone - that's for sure - but for medium to small boards that need more control and basic midi...worth considering.

eh it looks like the UI is top of the line. Not sure how it will compete with a lot of the other ones, but it looks like a way more affordable option for a lot of guitarists who want more out of their switcher (like midi) than just an analog one.

wut. there's no way you're comparing a Helix to a loop switcher rn lol. Those are effects units this does not have any effects. Just makes it so you can make your pedals do what you want them to do easier. Yes Helix has effects loops but it only has 2 compared to 6 here.@@JediCrackSmoke

I would agree with Seth... two very different products. The UX on this is incredible. Had it figured out in 10 min (which for a switcher is saying something). This is a great product for saving presets and basic midi while Helix / Fractal, Axe is multi-effects, amps and then some in one unit. Very different although I can see how you're mentioning the overlap of certain features.
