Thanks for stating a couple months. I too have trying to transition out of my old standard swing to Tom's. It been a journey. Last week it "mostly" kicked in. Advice is to keep the faith keep working, keep practicing. I'm a 13 shot 76 with a whole 18 holes of Saguto swings, finally. Takes a while to digest and incorporate to change bad swings. If you don't know, Tom is the best golf teacher on the planet. I went from scoring in the high 90s to playing in the mid to lower 80s and have flirted with breaking 80. I was able to put an end to 3 putting because I got on the green closer to the hole. This tip is amazing but if you really want to get even deeper with more Hogan-like stuff Tom has a playlist with over 10 videos talking and showing Ben Hogan stuff. For me, it helped with my timing and form and the form helped me with timing. Slowing down my swing is what I think has helped me more than anything to learn how to hit the ball better. there is over an hour of Hogan help. There is nothing better than hitting that crispy golf shot and you will know it when you do it and you will want to do it again and again.

I truly appreciate your very kind words and support, Ron, and I'm very glad to learn of your improvement through my channel's instruction!! I risk becoming a human dartboard every time I feature Mr. Hogan because some folks are so vehemently set on what they "think" he did, but to me it's always worth it. Mr. Hogan timelessly delivers phenomenal instructional value. But there are just so many misconceptions about his swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied teachings - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. We're doing our best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness, because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered!! I just want to say I tried the Saguto swing this morning for a 9 hole round- it wasn’t my best score ever but every shot I hit was crispy with SOLID contact. I played irons only and didn’t use a tee on any tee shots and was hitting them crispy this morning. I’m also not a long hitter and hit my 8 iron about 165-170 carry this morning. I’m a believer.

Welcome to the school, Elisabeth - I'm very glad to have you aboard!! Here's some preliminary advice to help you get off to a good start towards achieving your playing and scoring goals: 1) Regardless of a member's skill level, this swing necessitates a complete reboot for someone transitioning from a shift & lift swing (which is typically the case), and therefore it is imperative that one take sufficient time to ensure that the fundamental components are mastered. From the ground up there is nothing superfluous in the Stack & Tilt swing - in other words, everything with a purpose, and a purpose for everything. (For example, contrary to shift & lift where you may be taught to keep your trail foot perpendicular to the target line as a means of "creating resistance" in your trail side, in S&T we flare both feet out 10-20 degrees in order to facilitate a free flowing, inclined hip and shoulder turn.) I cannot emphasize this enough, as frustrations predominantly occur when students jump ahead in the curriculum without properly dedicating themselves to the foundational base upon which our consistently repeatable, powerful, low maintenance swing must be built. Chapter 1 of the Golf Swing Simplified program (GSS) and Part I of Get Out & Go Play (GOGP) both address this. 2a) GSS: One of the many great things about this swing is that you can achieve solid ball striking even at the most basic levels. This is why I oftentimes will suggest that students park themselves on Chapter 2 of the GSS course for an extended period of time after locking down Chapter 1's foundational elements. Chapter 2 reinforces the body motions and the weight-forward component, and it culminates with what I call "The Best Golf Swing Practice Drill of All Time". Work yourself sequentially and gradually through the chapter, and then commit yourself to that drill in Lesson 2.8. Learn it. Practice it. Master it. You can even use this partially abbreviated swing on the course and play quite well with it as it will provide plenty of distance. (It actually is the full swing minus just a couple of power accumulators.) Once you've got that down, you will be well prepared to move forward in the curriculum and well on your way towards taking ownership of YOUR swing! 2b) GOGP: This quick-start program is exactly as it sounds - it is designed to fast-track you out onto the course so you can have fun - and success - playing as you learn! Should you choose this path, everything in #1 above still applies, and as implied above in 2a you will still want to work through it sequentially and gradually, mastering each lesson before moving ahead to the next one. In this program, Drill #5 - The Flying Wedge is the one you'll want to park yourself on and nail down. 3) Also, as you progress always keep in mind the V1 Swing Video Analysis service, an effective and inexpensive service that I highly recommend to everyone in the school. I liken it to bringing your swing into the shop for a tune-up or minor repair. Scheduling one on a quarterly basis for preventive maintenance will do wonders for keeping things humming along nicely, and it's also a great tool for pinpointing and resolving any issues that arise. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf 4) Finally, please migrate over to the SagutoGolf Community Forum - which is included in your online school membership - and begin engaging with your fellow members. It only takes a minute or two to enroll - just go to your “My Courses” screen and you’ll see a link to get started. Once signed in you’ll be able to access and participate in the great dialogue that we are having on a variety of topics. You can start discussions, contribute to existing threads, post specific swing questions, make some new friends, and just share in the common bond of golfers from around the world seeking to improve their games and help others to do the same. I monitor the forum regularly and participate in the discussions, including assisting with swing-related inquiries. I really think you’ll enjoy it! I look forward to hearing from you regularly in the Forum and to assisting you in building a consistent, low maintenance, powerful, body-friendly swing that will bring your enjoyment of this great game to a new level! Have fun out there!! TS

Is the grip of the club held more powerfully in the trail arm hand and the the grip of the lead hand held lighter?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Жыл бұрын
Hi Ray, I personally do not feet any difference in grip firmness between my two hands. Grip pressure is something that is very unique to each of us, which is why conveying personal "feels" in this regard have led so many golfers astray. For example, a 2 out of 10 “baby bird” grip to a strong guy like Sam Snead may equate to an 8 out of 10 to another golfer. We definitely don't want that handle swimming around in our hands because we're so loosey goosey that we can't control the clubface. A secure grip and soft arms are what we're after here. That prescription will certainly resonate differently for different folks, but the key is that our grip pressure should give us complete control of the club while not introducing swing-killing tension that prevents us from properly executing the motion and/or robs us of speed potential. Finding that sweet spot is a highly individual thing, and it is critical to consistently blissful ballstriking. Tom

My question is, your talking about the trail arm working in the downing. But you've also said the shoulders have to work through the ball too, how do you blend the two?
@SagutoGolf

I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible, Brandon, because we're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason is why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why so many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. I love you videos you are a great instructor however I have one instruction I have been practicing your tilting mechanics I would like to question the downswing that you offered buy first moving your lower body towards the target which doesn't work for me it only works when I laterally move my hips towards the left of the target at a 45° angle if I lean my hips towards the target it's impossible to deliver the club properly to impact makes sense to me since the club remains on a circle and towards the target I am sure you are doing this naturally
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 5 ай бұрын
I appreciate your kind words regarding my instruction content and teaching style, Vic! When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center and path intact without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while - and this is key - the head and thus the swing center remains in place.) This combination of the lateral and rotational will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. Having said that, ultimately we must individually determine what feels or actions work best for us while adhering to the parameters of the proper physics and geometry of the golf swing, and one great thing about this swing system is that it provides plenty of leeway for doing so. As such, the motion you are describing - which is a combination of lateral and rotational - is perfectly acceptable. As this relates to the nature of your question in more general terms, I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. As such, it is important to understand that the lessons on this channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my KZbin content. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of the school, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. i certainly agree that the right arm should fold and that we shouldn't try to arc the right arm around from the top, and that the teaching profession has been too left arm centric ("the right arm only goes along for ride", etc.) and the right arm is the most powerful arm (for the right hander) and delivers most of the power; but the right arm can only deliver maximum power if it is relaxed and is able to fold/flex freely. and, it is the role of the left hand and arm to ensure that the right arm is fully relaxed in the first part of the backswing. in the waggle the heel pad of the left hand pulls the lower part of the right arm to the left in the waggle. this is key. the joint of the left wrist presses in to return the club to the ball. the heel pad then resists against the wrist joint. the digiti minimi and the flexor retinaclum work as antagonistic opposites in the waggle. in the takeaway the heel pad of the left hand pulls on the right forearm and the joint of the left wrist pushes the lower of part of the right arm back. this folds the right arm. when the left wrist has fully cocked the left side of the right forearm will be facing straight in front. and, it is at this point that right arm becomes active and pushes back, creating depth at the top of the backswing. and, in the downswing the left side of the right forearm strikes thru as though it wants to retain its position right the way thru into the follow thru; but the left hand pulls it straight when it applies pressure against the left side of the shaft in the hiiting area.

This has helped me significantly with hitting irons more pure, but for some reason I am having a harder time implementing this for fairway woods and the driver. Are there any subtle differences applying this concept to irons vs woods or do I just need more practice time with it? Thanks for simplifying this game for us all!
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, It’s really the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. (In fact, here is a video of Stack and Tilt co-founder Mike Bennett hitting the driver: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZfQpa2vfZilqaM. It looks very similar to his iron swing, right?: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX3NqIiVZqiWbdE ) If you do a search on this channel you'll see some content on the driver and fairway woods. Upon learning this swing properly you will be harnessing the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". This is the reason my students and online school members of all age ranges end up bombing it farther than they ever had previously. Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the longer clubs it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) They don't start with - or maintain - enough weight on the front side. In general with the longer clubs we should add a little more front weight load at address - more like 60/40 instead of the 55/45 prescribed for the other clubs. This forward weight should gradually increase to the top of the backswing (70/30) and build further on the downswing - approximately 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. 2) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the longer clubs as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, changing the low point and rerouting the club. This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. 3) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shaft length of the longer clubs encourages more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as you take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as you maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around you, it should put you in the proper position at the top so you can attack the ball from the inside. That's great, Rod - I'm very glad to learn of your progress and I'm thrilled to know that you are joining the online school!! Here's some preliminary advice to help you get off to a good start: 1) Regardless of a member's skill level, this swing necessitates a complete reboot for someone transitioning from a shift & lift swing (which is typically the case), and therefore it is imperative that one take sufficient time to ensure that the fundamental components are mastered. @SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Liam, Going forward let me see you asking these swing specific questions in the SagutoGolf Members' Forum community (it's included with your online school enrollment). It's an active, fun, and highly supportive environment, and you're far more apt to get more specific and detailed swing advice there. The best answer I have for your question is "Yes". On the surface you may find that to be of no help at all, but consider that each and every one of us is unique with our own set of feels and it may start to make some sense. There are, however, some absolutes, so even if you like to "feel" a part of your swing with the hands/arms/wrists, you know that: 1) you must not snatch or roll the club to the inside on the way back, 2) you must not allow the hands/arms/trail shoulder to bring the path over the top at the transition (or at any point during the downswing), and 3) you must not try to time any type of contrived flippy, rolling hand/arm/wrist manipulation with the split second of impact. So, if I had my preference, you would build in the lower body motion at the transition (see this Hogan video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5bNg4qeqqdqr5o) to carry the arms, wrists, and hands into a shallow position from which they can apply force to the hit, and then you would maintain the "flying wedge" through the zone for consistently crispy impact ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJaVnIRqacatgJY ). I hope this helps to clarify thing for you. Beyond that, I'll see you in the Forum! Cheers! Tom

It's sad that "conventional instruction" has gone to such great lengths to take the dominant trail arm out of the swing, Mike. Hi Colin, You can slow any of these videos down to 25% of regular speed by clicking on the video settings option (the gear-like icon) and selecting playback speed). Try this: If you keep the butt end of the club pointing towards the ball in the downswing your trail hand will not be able to "take over" and reroute the club. Think of hammering a nail into a board that is positioned at ground level just in front of your lead foot. You would not allow your dominant forearm and hand to bring the hammer across the nail from the outside because you would end up bending the nail with the glancing blow before delivering the full force of the hammer into your ankle. Hello, Tom. But he did not tilt in backswing, so the shaft is laid of. Tilting with the left shoulder having "relation" with the ball ( as you teach) makes the plane more vertical at P4, the butt of the handle points somewhere within feet and the ball. I guess players who have strong grip and love that hammer drill would benefit from his swing. Cheers!

@SagutoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting comment, especially since the thumbnail picture for this video shows Mr. Hogan fully tilted at the top of his backswing! Physiologically, you cannot execute a centered backswing with the head staying in place and the lead shoulder pointing downward - as Mr. Hogan advocated in his Five Lessons book and supported further with the famous angled pane of glass imagery - without tilting the upper torso to the left (for a right-handed player). Try it in a mirror - you'll see that your spine must tilt and extend in order to do this. Cheers! Tom

Rahm & Finau are a couple of examples of not needing a "long" backswing to crush the ball. Reaching back for more is like conducting a séance for those old swing demons, and they sure come back to haunt us when we do. Remember - the depth we create by getting our hands behind the trail shoulder at the top gives us all the power we need (it's invoking the tremendous force of angular momentum), even if it "looks" like less than a full swing compared to our old Shift & Lift days. Trust me - you've created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it deep; there's no need to try to get to "parallel" - that false deity of swings past. Execute the motions, understand your body's natural stopping point, and then - the most difficult part - train yourself to stop there! Cheers! Tom

I don't quite get where the power is coming from (other than the trail arm) with stack and tilt? I mean how do I get momentum shift if all my weights on my lead foot? I mean ya don't throw a punch or a ball with the weight on the front foot. It shifts a little. Or is it like 60/ 40 at setup and through the backswing and then ya move more weight forward on the downswing? But even then it feels like there needs to a little bit of weight shift to the back foot to create momentum through the ball. But no swaying and definitely no lifting lol. 🤷‍♂️

You start with your weight forward (55/45 on the front side; 60/40 for the longer clubs), increase that same weight forward to the top of the backswing (70/30), and further increase the forward weight during the downswing from halfway down (80/20) through impact (90/10) and to the finish at 95/5 forward. There's no "weight shift", therefore - unless one were to fall backwards - there's nothing to reverse or pivot!! And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing! It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only system for the full swing, the short game, and much more. The school's intuitive course layout greatly simplifies the entire process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm regularly adding new content. There's even a members' forum where you can ask me specific swing-related questions, interact with others in the SagutoGolf community, and suggest new content ideas, plus you'll also have access to all exclusive KZbin paid channel members-only content at no additional charge. This will really put you on the fast track towards learning everything in a well-organized, self-guided fashion. You start with your weight forward (55/45 for the short and mid irons; 60/40 for the longer clubs), increase that same weight forward to the top of the backswing (70/30), and further increase the forward weight during the downswing from halfway down (80/20) through impact (90/10) and to the finish at 95/5 forward. The upper torso/head - and thus the swing center - remains in place during the increasing forward weight load in the downswing. This enables the golfer to "clear" while keeping the club moving on the proper in-to-out path. There's no shifting back and forth - and therefore nothing to "reverse" - and the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing. Here's a link to my FREE mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” in case you’re interested in learning some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ Tom

You probably are going over the the top with your swing, which creates an out to in path of the club= ball contact closer to the shaft than the sweet spot, plus your club face is 90% of the time open when you do this. Try a shorter back swing, but fully commit and hit through the ball, worked like a charm for me

It's an interesting scenario, but you're definitely not alone! Just ask Phil... (from the opposite side, of course). Short of saying that you need to train your trail hand to hit - which I realize may be difficult - I would recommend you work on maintaining your connections and allowing the lower body to bring you into impact. This Hogan video may help to give you a visual in this regard: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5bNg4qeqqdqr5o. Also, even though this impact video lesson focuses on maintaining the angle between your trail arm and the club shaft, it may help you feel impact in a different way that prevents your dominant lead hand from getting out of control: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJaVnIRqacatgJY One of the keys in your situation is to not allow that strong arm - which probably seems to have a mind of its own in anxiously wanting to take over when you're trying to bust one - to jump ahead of the lower body and throw the entire downswing out of sequence, because if it does you're likely taking regular trips to Pull-Slice City. If you can train it instead to trail the lower body to the point where the shaft is parallel to the ground on the way down, then you should be in position to hit hard with the dominant hand as if it were a tennis backhand shot or throwing a frisbee. Additionally, this is a members’ forum post by a student in my online school specific to this very issue: “I found a great tip in the Power Distance section. If you are a natural lefty that plays golf right-handed this is a breakthrough! Retract your lead shoulder during the downswing as hard as you retract your trail shoulder in the backswing. You will be amazed the speed you generate! It is also a very natural motion.” I hope this helps, and I really hope to see you soon in my online school, where many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives! TS

@@SagutoGolf Great info. That's the thing though - i would use a racket in my right hand and throw a frisbee with my right hand too. I write, throw stuff (except a frisbee) and play pool etc with my left hand but everything else is right handed - golf, tennis, ping pong, cricket, baseball etc. If i threw a frisbee backhanded i'd use my right hand, to throw it forwards i'd use my left. FML. I think i should try a left handed club and see what happens, maybe i'm shit because i'm playing wrong handed.

Hi Tim, Apologies for your confusion. It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my KZbin content. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of the school, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews.
