kinda like using your putting grip while chipping. wonder if its because it also gets the club more upright

I “saved” this video. I’m a scratch player, but I’ve had the chipping yips lately. I actually lost a recent match by 1 stroke, because of my poor chipping. And, this was on a day when I was striking the ball purely, which made it hurt even more. lol. This reminded me that my hands were too low, and I was swinging the club back too far inside. This not only causes “face” issues, but it causes the club to bottom out a bit early, and also digs the heal into the ground. I’m not sure why I stopped doing it correctly, but this was an eye opening video for an easy correction. Thanks, Pete!

Nice video, Pete. I liked how you drew the lines to make things more visually understood.

Very helpful instruction Peter. I'm wondering what alterations (if any) would be required when hitting these short chips out of the rough? I often find my approach shots missing the green.

Great explanation of the concept. Enjoyed the video, but you should have invited your pal Rick Shiels. He struggles and it would have been great to see you fix his issues.

I'm fortunate enough to live on a course so I've had time to give this a pretty thorough try the last couple days and I'm impressed. Playing on Florida's Bermuda grasses there are some shots that have always been trouble. Like hitting into the grain and into an uphill slope. We get that a lot when we land a little short. In my group I'm thought of as pretty good with my wedges. But digging in because of grass or slope or especially slope gave me nightmares. Really hit at the confidence level. But the change in grip opened my eyes. I was even able to use my lob wedge on shots like that. And my lob wedge only has 5 degrees of bounce. Pretty sharp for an amateur such as me. But I found it was useful on some shots and kept it in the bag as my least used club. But this is going to change that big time. So thank you kind sir. I need a bit more practice to get distance control down. The ball reacts a little differently than my normal (wrong) way of chipping. But I see dropping some more strokes overall starting right away. It gave me one skin tonight and I won by 1. So it's already paid off for me.

Really surprised he didn’t talk about using the bounce of the club to prevent digging in. That is 100% the current trend with chipping. Something I bet 99% of tour pros do.

@@danmyers9372 In effect he just told us how to better activate the bounce without saying bounce. Most of the guys I know don't know what bounce their wedges have or what it's there for. Some are still fairly good at chipping. But like me, they have shots that bring them trouble because they are digging in instead of gliding across the ground on the bounce. So giving them this, I expect they will either see the light, or simply change because it works better and never understand the why. lol

What about doing it from the rough stuff around the green, not just the lovely fairway grass?

Great technique and instruction, but, in my case it is more about FEAR... that fear of hitting it to far, and therefore the brain kicks in, trys to slow the club down and the hands stop and I look like someone who has never golfed before.

Distance control wise, are you all feel? or do you have some bryson level practice where you know "arms here carry 10 yard, arms here carry 15 yards" etc?

Thanks, Pete. This is a really timely video for me, I played today and although I had a +3 playing par, my chipping was horrendous, to the point where I had no confidence in my chipping so I was putting from off the screen (where I had no right to be putting from)!!! I can confidently say that this cost me 2-3 holes today!
