just here to say again that you're like one of the only music prod channels that doesn't just do glowing overly-positive banal BS and i'm here for it, might be a slower grind but you'll get the real ones & i'll personally be here for it and i bet there's bunch of others like me. keep it Real, like actually Real rather than Fake it's so fcking refreshing

making art > making money. if you just want to make money, find something else to do! Art is not for you. and no I'm not saying that people should not be paid for making art, that would be awful. Art is very important for humans after all! Even back when we lived in caves there was art around! It should be respected that way, and not turned into a "business grind". Then the whole meaning of what art is all about is lost.. At least in my own opinion. Great video!

On another side of the coin, there are some people who don't treat their art enough like a business and create great things but are never able to share it the way it could be shared. It's kinda like, "if you build it they will come", yeah they might but it would sure help if you told someone that you built it

I love the boring stuff. File management and metadata Binding hot keys Understanding psychoacoustics Fundamentals of synthesis I sat for an hour learning about the Nyquist limit last week, which led me down the rabbit hole of understanding exactly how a computer processes and stores bytes of audio data.

In session the vibe should be 100% creative. Business shouldn’t be a driving force until the project goes upstream for commercial release. Period.

I haven’t heard a lot of music production business folks suggest the 80/20 applies to creativity. Only for the monotonous non creative tasks. I don’t follow how that’s different than what you said. Statistically speaking, the paradox of choice is something to avoid. You mentioned searching for the perfect kick, however, getting in the weeds of the perfect kick (like that even exists?) hinders creativity. I understand that you should learn every step of the process. But I also understand that in my experience, collaborating and bringing in musicians that are better than myself is only for the betterment of the song.

I’m saying that musicians in real life are taking the business advice relating 80/20 and applying it themselves. I’m seeing it in rooms I’m in lol. And I’m obviously not telling anyone to purposely get in the weeds flipping through samples to the point where you’re not making music anymore. And collaborating and bringing in musicians ≠ outsourcing. I’m talking about finding people to take on the work you don’t feel like doing, not working together on music.

I once heard a person on a radio show try to say, "Hindsight is 20/20," but he accidentally said "50/50," and I thought that was far more apt, lol.

You 100% nailed it 👌. 80% of today's music is sh#t... That 80% comes from all the "business" producers that keep over using the phrase "workflow". It's why soul music is on a hiatus during this generation. Well done for articulating the issue so well.

Great video! I hate all that production stuff that talks about business stuff in production. Imo if you need a ton of vocal tuning and editing that’s a problem with an artist and you not having proper editing tools at your disposal. I rarely spend more than an hour editing a song. Outsourcing that one hour to then spend 15-30 minutes quality checking it doesn’t seem like a good use of my time. I guess if it has 100 vocal tracks or something that may be different? But yeah i don’t work on projects like that and if i did i’d charge a lot more. Also this mindset of charging a client less than you are worth to offload it to some beginner engineers for min wage (or close to it) is just wrong imo (something I see a lot).

There's one more thing that I'm tired of seeing: online music coaching programs like Team MBL who give you templates on how to market yourself on social media, and everyone follows that blindly. Each of them looks like a copy of each other; they behave like NPCs interacting with their music fans in a weird way. There's no personality, just copy-paste

Oh lol, managing the production process, connecting people, is exactly what being a producer traditionally means. Some of the most successful producers couldn't even play a single instrument.
