For me, the beauty of anything is in its utility, not just its appearance, so we're of like mind in that respect. I start spring housecleaning in January, moving from room-to-room in sequence. I refine the appearance and organization a little more each year, so to be honest, my cabinets and closets will probably never remain unaltered from year-to-year. This year, when I start on the bathroom, I'll replace all the storage boxes with prettier (all homemade) containers. For small things I have discovered that empty oxy-clean containers make marvelous storage, especially for tight spaces -- they conceal everything nicely, they're compact and stackable, easy to paint, decorate, and label. I'm always happy to store things attractively AND keep plastic out of the landfill. Hope you're feeling 100% soon!
@TheCraftyOrganizer2 жыл бұрын
I love that!!!!!! I am always happy to hear someone upcycling a container - you're right! Why let them go to a landfill if they can provide a useful function AND save you money?!?! Great job, Kathryn!

I agree with you on this subject! One time I bought a slack hanger; there were 4 rods on the one hanger, to hang 4 slacks at a time. I bought it because I saw on Pinterest that someone had taken all their rolls of ribbon and organized them by slipping them onto the rods. This turned out to be a bad idea. I could only "cut" the ribbon! If I needed to take the whole roll off, I would have to take off EVERY roll of ribbon on the rod to get to the ribbon I wanted. It was the same way when the roll was finished; I had to take off every roll to get to the empty roll. It was actually more time consuming than if I had just tossed the ribbon into a box with the rest of my ribbon rolls.
@TheCraftyOrganizer2 жыл бұрын
I made that mistake with ribbon too... I put it on a dowel. Then I realized I hate messing with it! now my ribbon sits in a gutter and is super easy to get to! :D

I follow a few accounts in Instagram and sometimes I get the impression that organizing things the way they do is just an excuse to buy more stuff. It's great to have things looking nice, but it's got to be affordable too so do all the containers help if you end up spending a lot of money to do it? You also have to consider if you need the items that you already have when you are organizing things - get rid of things if you /really/ do not need them and have too much, or if they are old and tatty, but keep them if they are still in good condition and you need them. If you want things that match, wait until what you currently have is so tatty that they have become unusable and buy stuff that matches then.

I MUCH prefer a real reveal over a staged one. Those are like the home remodels that designers post. Sure, the pics are from a real home, but they're taken before the kids and pets and work and school things are reintroduced to the space. I need to see how someone stores all the everyday junk that gets used and needs to be easily and quickly located. I appreciate that you did a REAL reveal. And it turned out pretty fantastic!

Hope you feel back to 100% real soon Norrine and am so sorry to hear you've been sick. Please take care of yourself! I too really need to organize my linen closet, but I have the opposite problem to you - my closet is rather deep and it makes using all the space hard because stuff in the back and on the top shelves gets lost in the black hole of space because it's impossible to reach without a ladder even though I'm on the taller side. I really do need to go out and get bins to corral all my stuff, because the only way I'd be able to access it all is to bin it so I can pull it out to see what I have, and also to avoid the knocking everything else over issue. Also must sort through all the towels and sheets I have and donate about 1/2 of it!

Bless your heart. I’ve been watching your videos -LOVING your videos - for almost a year now and this is my first time to comment. You stepped right on my buttons when pointing out that so many of those things look merchandised; not like a real home with real organization. It’s everywhere! Crafts…kitchens, (who only has teal and pink craft tools and supplies, or has 12 bottles of ketchup in their pantry and keeps all the red stuff together?) When I need help with the mess, that help needs to be geared toward the kind of practical, real-life issues in my house - not geared toward some fake “influencer” looking for hits, not looking out for me. Bless your sweet heart and get well soon. You’ll be in my prayers.

I just got through organizing my pantry. It's not perfect but it works for me. I got rid of the storage organization magazines too. I'm working on one cabinet/closet at a time and really looking at what's there and as a single person - what do I really need and how can I best organize it? First of all, I am SO sorry that you're feeling so poorly. I really hope it eases up on you very soon so (selfishly) we can have you back! And you deserve to be well and happy! Now, about those Pinterest photos...you are so right that they are deceiving! I living in a very tiny apartment run by a housing authority, so not only is it affordable for me (after my life completely fell to pieces) but they do come into our apartments once a year to check on our housekeeping. They look into every closet and complain very loudly when things get too cluttered. So I've gotten rid of tons of things over the past year, consolidated the things I want/need to keep (crafters have major problems with that sometimes!), put a rein on my urges to buy new crafting things and am just doing the best I can with the space I have ("space" makes me laugh because I really have enough room to breathe and that's about it!). Congratulations on your closet! I suspected we would see it in the next video. It's actually nice to see that you have the very same space problems as a lot of us AND the same struggles. That makes me appreciate you even more. Take care of you. We will be here waiting for you when you can get back to us. Thank you for all the inspiration! It really does mean a lot!

It’s the same thing when KZbinrs show before and after with their refrigerator reorganizing and pantry redos. Nothing from before and all new clear fridge bins. I think the look is great but those bins are 💰💰💰 and I’d rather spend that money to pay off debt. I’ve used many cardboard boxes with contact paper to achieve the same effect in closets. I hope you feel better real soon! Take care and rest up as much as necessary. I love this video! I always though some of those Pinterest photos were way too pretty and not realistic. I do love Pinterest for ideas and help on certain things. I think your linen closet looks great and very functional!

I redid my linen closet and one important thing you have to do is measure your space and calculate the size of bins you can use , in order to maximize the most use of all space.

Thank you for doing this video! The beautiful “perfect” closets & houses are not functional. I hope you feel better soon. I’m recovering with IT too. It swept through the entire family regardless of our precautions.

Lots of good points there. Can't imagine me wanting to clean out the linen cupboard when I'm sick though. Well done for making this video. I hope you are better soon.

Thankfully I did the work part right as I was starting to not feel well.... it was the editing and talking part that was the hardest part to finish. LOL

Just watched your video. So glad you're doing better. I too love Pintrest and get very inspired with many DIY ideas...and I like your point of view on being realistic with organization and functionality... yet still have it pleasing to the eye. Take care.

Exactly! Thank u. Just watched a laundry room makeover where decor items were on shelf above the washer/dryer, while laundry supplies were behind u in a low cabinet across the room. Too much bending & back n forth to machines to add detergent, go back grab bleach, then go back grab softener. It just wasn't practical.

Hope you feel better soon. I’ve been having a headache on and off for two weeks. I’m trying to rework my scrapbook room and having some storage problems. This is a craft room and it doubles as my sleep room.

I do hope you are feeling better soon. You give such sound and practical advice. I will soon be going through my linen closet and this was such good advice. I often feel like giving up because my space never ends up looking beautiful. Now I plan on using the containers I have, rather than trying to spend money on things I don't need.

I can’t I agree with you more. Zoning is the only way to go. And bins work beautifully with deep closets or cabinets. It is soooo much easier to pull a box out rather than reaching in and knocking everything over. I keep all my spices in two old cat food can cases. It is so nice just to pull out these two boxes when I am cooking. Usability is key. Take care of yourself and feel better soon!

I agree with the bins and boxes - usability IS key. And it only needs to work for you and your household. :D
