100% agree with you, it's really common sense, too... Without rinsing off the dirt/ sand/ etc on the car, we're always going to rub that crap against the car during "quick detailing". I only reserve use of detailers only after car wash and also to clean off bird poop/ bugs (after letting it sit for a few minutes then a gentle one direction wipe on my matte car)

Yup! Finally some real info!! NOTHING beats water and soap! I clean my car once a week and been doing so for 13 years. The only marks it has are stone chips and an occasional scratch which are all what I like to call "battle scars" I use QED only after a wash and have it in the back of my car to remove bird poo, but then I saturate it A LOT more than required. Bird poo is much more dangerous than a few swirls! Ask me how I know 😓 😄

Thanks Todd for breaking the myth that you can use Detail Sprays in between washes or to remove light dust from the paint surface. In all the videos that I have seen, you are the only person that has said not to use a detailing spray in between washes. Use it after the car has been washed as a drying aid or after the car has been dried.

At last, I found a video with the same thought as mine... Quik Detailer still has big risk of scratching the paint.. there's still dirt particles that dragged by the microfiber towel accross the surface although it has detailer lubrication with it. I usually use QD after a wash to touch up the gloss and protection. I always have a bottle of QD stand by in my car to be able to clean something quikly such as bird poo, tree sap for spot cleaning, but not a full car or a panel cleaning though..

A good tip is to detail the inner wheel wells first (the dirtier the better) .This primes the microfiber towel with some dirt so that the dust will attract to it when you go to wipe your paint. Number one mistake is people using clean cloths without priming first.

@@mikeytek We don't do "rinseless washes". There's simply nothing as safe as a traditional wash. I've seen many versions of how to "safely" use rinseless wash, and they all have strayed well away from the actual instructions and end up being nothing more than a soap once all of the convoluted processes are added. Using tons of towels, pre-mixing solutions, etc. to me just isn't worth the risk. I'd much rather go to a car gathering with a dusty car in perfect condition than a dust-free car with swirls.

Thank you. I've heard of people doing that, but I don't really see it as a necessity. If somebody wants to buy a lot of wash mitts, we'd definitely be happy to sell them, but it's not something we'd promote. The other half of the equation is the act of wiping your wash mitt onto the surface. If not done right, either the brand new / fresh mitt or the rinsed one can mar it just as easily. As for the other product, I've never heard of them so can't comment. Thanks.

Todd, sorry for resurrecting an old video commentary, and I’m sure you’ve forgotten more about detailing than I’ll ever know but, my experience of rinse-less systems (ONR) is absolutely at odds with your advice that between wash touch-ups introduces swirls etc. I use ONR on a carbon black (midnight blue) BMW and an Orca black Audi and I’ve looked at the paint under a sunmatch 3 lamp and a flex dwl2500 light pre / post using ONR and it didn’t introduce swirls…..I also checked with optimum whether there were any fillers in ONR (there aren’t)…..maybe you could do a panel test video sometime so that you could validate whether swirls are/aren’t introduced. Obviously, I’m talking about a dusty rather than dirty car and Optimum claim that encapsulation is a primary reason why the paint doesn’t swirl…..would be great to see the results in a controlled environment. 👍

Light marring that builds up over time cannot be captured on camera or video, so it's really pointless to try to do a video just for that. You also have to look at the educational aspect from the fact that we are talking to the general public, and the masses. Imagine somebody who is not a detailing enthusiast (the majority of society) grabbing a bottle, reading that it won't scratch the finish, then going to town on their car only to scratch it up. If you personally can do a technique that works well, then good for you, and keep doing it. But we don't use it here in the shop or on our personal cars because we simply don't want to risk it. If the car needs to be cleaned, we wash them...

@@alexs8312 We don't use them on our personal cars, either...we wait until the next time to wash. It's our responsibility as educators to let them know the truth behind products and processes, regardless of their level of enthusiasm for it. The biggest culprits of this are those who actually are enthusiasts...just go to the car shows and see. You don't have to make the paint on a daily driver an obsession, and that's where many people have the wrong mindset about detailing and protection. You CAN have a highly detailed vehicle that is a daily driver. All is requires is the know-how of a proper wash system, and not making mistakes like stated in this video. Then you get the pride of ownership throughout the entire process without having to go crazy with the car, and you can still hold the higher value.

I use quick detailer on my motorcycle because I don't like hosing it down on the regular. Water gets places where it should't be and I end up with corrosion in hard to reach places. I polish the tank and the fenders with some compound every couple years and it very easily removes the light scratches. Overall I think this method keeps the bike looking fresher than if I washed it all the time.

I knew about this before already because of my old car. I clean it before washing just to make it clean all week. I realized that the swirls probably coming from the dirt when wiping it off with a towel. Now I leave my car all dirty without wiping it off until the next car wash. It looks clean looking without a swirls. Also for a quick wash, Go to a touchless carwash.

This man speaks the truth but I really don’t care . I’m an avid detail waterless quick fix car enthusiast and constantly get compliments on my 20 yr old Tahoe’s paint ,shine and overall appearance ! Coworkers and strangers alike are always asking how I manage to keep my old truck looking better and newer than the most current year models ! I mean sure there’s superficial swirls and a few imperfections but hardly noticeable to the average 85/90 % of the people I come in contact with and I’m ok with that!

Do you recommend a product to use after a repaint that will allow for fresh paint to off gas and leave a small amount of protection behind before you can do a wax/sealant/ceramic coating to the car OR is it better to let the paint be fresh get slight swirls and do a one step before laying down protection? Thank you for your time!

I'd let it settle, then polish, then coat/wax/seal when the time is right.

I just use the Lucas spray detailed cause you can use it wet just for lubricant while I am drying the vehicle works amazing even on glass. Is just mist the micro fiber towel. But like he said I never use it to wipe down a dusty car. Only as I am drying it. I don’t rely on it to protect it. I just use it to aid in not scratching the vehicle while drying

I’ve been preaching this forever. You should’ve seen all Renny’s detail mafia guys using bead maker as a waterless wash at The Quail 2019. All the cars there looked like crap. I prepped 4 lambos and a new ford GT for the show using feynlab pure rinseless. Needless to say all my cars looked the best. Two of the lambos even made the thank you email and the ticket sales email for this year.

I polish my car twice a year so I'm not too worried about ultra fine scratches that occur from using a quick detailer. This dude is 100% correct though.. This will leave scratches.

Two questions: What about cars with paint protection film? And if you have a ceramic coating on top of it? Would this be okay to use the quick detailer the "wrong" way as you describe here? 2nd question: Where do you buy nice microfiber towels like that? All I seem to find are glorified polyester napkins.

I always like myth busters. One more related query:- I just finished coating my vehicle with Collinite 845. Now in between those shampoo washes, I was thinking of using a quick detailer like sonax BSD after water rinsing the vehicle to get rid of light dust. Will that also be an invitation to swirls?
@Esotericdetail
@Esotericdetail 2 жыл бұрын
If it's "garage dust", then that would be OK. If it's "driving dust", then not so much. Chances are good that stuff you pick up from driving isn't going to just fall off with a quick rinse, therefore leaving you with a high risk of swirl potential over time.

Collinite 845 provides an awesome gloss and is very hydrophobic for a wax. It’s simply awesome stuff and fairly economical! Great choice!

I agree, however, you may be able to clean a car using a waterless wash like Adams waterless wash and detailer or AMMO NYC. Just spray and remove the dust with ONLY one wipe using the JUST the clean side of a waffle weave microfiber towel and not reusing it until the whole car is done. I use a total of 3 to 4 rags and wash them in the washing machine every time after use. I only do this when I drive the car for less than 100 miles and is just a bit dusty. With black paint, is inevitable creating small scratches to it but swirl marks will never be created if doing it correctly. For scratch free surface, is always good to do a full paint correction and ceramic coat or sealant even if the car is brand new.

No matter how clean your towel is or how thick the suds are, if you drag contaminants like dust and little sand particles you ARE going to scratch your paint. It might be minor but it will scratch.

Excellent video. Personally I've always used QD on a wet car as part of the drying process. A lot of these waterless wash & wax sprays look too good to be true as well. By the way, what's your opinion on contactless car washing? If a car isn't particularly dirty, can you high pressure rinse, snow foam and high pressure rinse again as some suggest? Also, if I do this, is it really safe to dry the car after with a microfibre or chamois? Your thoughts would be greatly welcomed.
@Esotericdetail

If I'm not truly washing the car, there's no way that I am rubbing a towel on it! You could do what we call a Rinse/Foam/Rinse, then blow dry it, but just no towels.

In my view, wash your car. Once a year, iron spray, tar spray, and clay, or do that every every 2 years. Then light wash car again. Apply a good sealant or do a paint polish + sealant. Then apply a newgen ceramic spray coating. Then apply a 2nd ceramic spray coating next day. It’s 1/2 day’s work, but paint is fully protected. The afterwards, wash car as you like. Every 3 months, do a really thorough wash, and every 6 months do sealant + spray coat. Quick detailing isn’t necessary.
